      Guitars are not meant to be scratched, they are meant to be used. Wear is part of it, but that's not the same as one not taking care of it. I have a Soloist I had custom built back in 1999 and there's no scratches on the body or headstock. I cannot get that paint job redone and I'm not interested in ruining it, so I'm careful. It has been gigged a lot, it has been used properly, the electronics have been changed several times due to wear and moisture, sweat and what not. But I have the back taped up and I'm taking care of it.
      My "workhorse" Les Paul has had its headstock repaired three times and it's pretty dinged up. I try to be careful, but I put it down when I have to do something, grab something etc. while playing. Scratches are part of a workhorse guitars life, but you don't have to be a pig with your guitar. Mine may be scratched and dinged up, but I don't drop a bridge on it, place it on tools when I work on it, or do other stupid things just so that it can look "extra worn" and "kool". Road rash is cool enough, but scratches due to complete carelessness is not.

    on the abr 1 bridge, you can get more distance by turning the saddle 180 degrees. Also, intonation depends on the strings you use. all a factory can do is intonate to a standard which is close.

  • @56davidwright

    What l do is remove a screw or two until my leg stops hurting. Also you can attach sandbags to the headstock to stop the neck flying up. I find this method far more mobile than strapping the guitar down with cable ties as most venues these days do not provide adequate anchor points on stage. Another tip, forget those octave bends, they will break your strings every time, even with top wrapping.

  • @sewing1243

    It is my understanding that if you remove the saddle for the g string on the original bridge, reverse it, and reinstall it you should get the necessary extra distance to set proper intonation.

    Some nucklehead said the bridge won't effect harmonics? Wrong, wrong, wrong. Bridge is a part that does have a definite effect on tone. More than the nut as it affects fretted and open strings where the nut only affects open strings. And I checked out Scott Grove awhile ago and he has some goofy ideas. And he really lost me when he jumped on the wood doesn't affect the tone bandwagon. Anyone who has ever worked on guitars knows that anything that effects how the string vibrates effects tone. If vibration transfers thru bridge to body then certain vibrations transfer back on to the string. The wood changes those vibrations. The electric guitar is more than just electro-mechanical tone, it's a very complex combination of all it's parts.

      I think you can flip it over and it'll work. Although the string saddles are slightly different sizes for the wound and unwound strings. You could disassemble the bridge and the rollers if you really want to give yourself a headache. Just get the right sized pickup. I guess. Check with Schaller and see if they have a lefty version. They're better foe bending strings do. Especially if you do big bends.

      At any rate, get the ABR roller and Faber railpiece. The ABR is all brass with brass studs - just like in the 50's and on to the early 70's, The Faber tailpiece is aluminum with brass screws, just like it was back in the 50's and on to the early 70's. Don't muck about with steel or zinc alloy hardware. Nothing kills your harmonics, sustain and tone like steel and zinc. Want to do it one better? I could never understand putting a roller bridge on les paul, unless it has a trem I have no use for one, I've recently found insert adapter thumb wheels and post, that turn a large post bridge into a small post bridge,and I'm using a gotoh Tom bridge,the smaller bridge and post has more sustain, then the same roller bridge you have there,as long as your bridge post are set right, and you can intonate an Abr small post bridge, you will be amazed at the sustain you can get,the larger roller bridge sucks up the sustain your trying to transfer thru the body,and have it come back up thru the strings, I also wrap a small piece on shielding tape on bottom of the post just to tighten up the bridge,check out the Faber bridge adapter,I was able to just get the thumb wheel and post adapter that screws right into your existing bridge studs for $15 from Philly luthiers and just bought a gotoh Tom bridge,Farber is a little more expensive.

    Good video thank you. Just wanted to point out that you cant really supply a pre-intonated bridge, as intonation is different for every guitar and factors like neck relief and string gauge change the intonation, not just string length. Alter any one of those things and you need to re-intonate. I was interested to hear your observations about loss of harmonics, thanks.

    A Gibson bridge has removable string saddles. If the G string saddle won't go back far enough, take it out of the bridge, unscrew it from the adjustment screw, turn the saddle around, reinsert the screw and put the saddle back on the bridge. Next thing is to use a round jewelers file (the very thin end) and then slightly round the saddle slots, then take some 600 grit sand paper and fold it around the sharp side of a kitchen table knife and sand the slot. No more breaking strings at the bridge saddles

    Schaller roller bridges are superior to the Wilkinson because the rollers are at a slight angle to make up for the bridge being at a slight angle. The Wikinson and all the others I've seen don't take into account the bridge sitting at a slight angle for intonation purposes. So you end up with the string sitting ar an angle on theb roller because the rollers are straight but on posts that are at an angle. It's kinda hard to explain but look up a Schaller and they show you with a drawing. .

    • @ryanstark2350

      I think I would buy tbe Schaller. Having the rollers better aligned with the strings seems sensible. Sadly though, the Schaller is useless for me because I'm left handed so the angle goes the wrong way.

  • @stoneysdead689

    The weight difference between those two bridges is less than a half ounce, I'm not really worried about that. That said- the whole point is to get something that intonates better and is easier to adjust when you have to- if that isn't the case, I don't really see the point. As far as breaking strings- I've never noticed my Epiphone breaking strings any more often than any of my other guitars. That's a problem I don't think really exists- I've never heard anyone complaining about their Les Paul breaking strings either. I've been paying for over 35 years- played for a living at one time- I think I would have heard about it at least- if it were a thing. That said- the T-O-M does suck to adjust- I hate it man, why would anyone put the damn adjustment screws under the strings? I mean once you have a two-piece bridge like a Les Paul you kind of have to but- Fender is so much easier man. I should convert my Les Pul to a string through body huh?

    I love the wilkinson type. Actually I believe they buy them from China and resell them. The chinese ones for 8 to 10.00 bucks are the same other then the screws for the saddles. The chinese one uses allen wrenches to tighten saddles. (don't over torq them...just snug) The other great thing about the Wilkinson type is that you can shim individual saddles. I just did it on a LP copy. My thin E string was tinging a little....I've used paper and tin foil (just did it with tin foil). I raised the single saddle about .003. Most of the other bridges don't have that capability. You have to raise the post which raises more then one string.
    This is the bridge to use if your guitar has intonation problems....if the bridge post's were installed a little to far forward or back. It has a little extra adjustment. You can also lock the bridge to the posts with set screw. A nice feature. This is the only chinese bridge I will use.....the rest of the Les Paul copies are junk.
    He is right about the harmonics....you will lose a little because of the rollers....if you don't use clean harmonics then it's fine...distorted harmonics should be fine. The advantage is tuning stability. And none of the stupid spring noise the standard les paul bridges can have. This bridge has nothing to vibrate like the LP ones....none of the stupid intonation problems with the LP bridges also....especially with the chinese copy les paul guitars. It's a cheap correction for a cheap guitar. Be sure to buy the correct posts. You can always get 8mm ones from the chinese sites if you need them for 2.00 or so.....the top part of post is 4mm like the standard LP/epiphone,

    Get the brass ABR roller bridge, and get the Faber alu stop tailpiece.
    Back in the 50's and 60's, LP's had alu tailpieces and brass bridges. Now they use heavy stainless tails and bridges that kills all sound. If you use the ABR bridge you have a full brass connection from the roller to the bridge to the posts.

It's better to use a hammer and smack a shallow notch into the saddles with a set of old strings. Those Epi bridges are junk as well so not a lot you can do with the, aside from installing actual brass saddles.

    Roller bridges on non trem guitars is not only impractical, it's losing sustain, you're going to have the same problems, the rollers are round, there's no break point of the string the string actually is vibrating against that radius of the roller... if the wire rattles on the ABR, ya get a new one or give it a bend at the corners so it won't... EVERY Gibson owner should know all this instead of wasting money on junk.
    I've been playing Gibsons for decades...never broke a string never went out of intonation, if you're breaking strings there, those saddle grooves are too sharp.

    lol using an Allen wrench on the bridge studs won't effect intonation... do you even play guitar?
    Also! intonation screws always go in front not the back towards the tail, that makes it easier to adjust.. again you need to be watching the "how to" videos not us

    Huuuuhhhhh this whole video is a joke right??? Intonation is MEANT to be adjusted....you absolutely cannot feel that weight of the Wilkinson lmao ...also roller bridges ate meant for guitars with trems . No point whatsoever is a solid tailpiece guitar .. this is all just goofy nonsense honestly

    • @KaptainCanuck
      @KaptainCanuck 2 года назад +1

      Being "meant" for tremolo-equipped guitars does not meant there won't be some effect on non-equipped. Proven fact: strings break less easily do the lack of sharp angle and rubbing on the saddles, especially if steel strings are used on brass.

  • @danceswithbadgers
    @danceswithbadgers 2 года назад

    String breakage cam be reduced by CAREFUL use of a small file to take off any small ridges in the saddle string slot. You're not looking to make the slot deeper - just to make it smooth so there's a better contact area for the string. String breakage goes right down.

    Not Sure How I Found Your Video Unless It Is Because I Was Searching For Bridges And the Ad 's Found Me. Great Video And Timely For Me Personally. The Reason I bought One Gibson Was Shoulder/Arm/Neck Problem And The Gibson Les Paul I Bought Is Semi Hollow Lightweight And Sounds Great. I Think The Previous Owner Sold It Because One Of The Wheels On The Tunamatic Would Not Turn Like It Was Stripped. I pulled Up And Pulled The Whole Grommet Out Of The Wood. It Is Missing One Of The Saddle Retainer Clips. I used a Cut Piece Of Strat Pickup Grommets and That Works. So Your Video Pointing Out The Weight Saved Me In Looking For Replacements. I wanted The Same Weight And Actually Was Thinking About That And Aluminum Versions Of The Tuneamatic. The Bell Tone Harmonics Is Interesting As Far As The Original and What You Found. That is the Kind of Very Useful Information You Get Lucky To Find Once In A While. Thanks. You Also Got Lucky If The Screws Where Facing The Neck the(grooves in saddles setup that way). They have to be manually taken out on some of them and put the low where the high is to get the benefit of the screws facing the neck. It allows lower Intonation and not hitting the back of bridge.They Are Not All That Way. I Am Surprised About The Pre Set Intonation. I Do The Harmonic At The 12th And Use A Tuner With A Light. The Harmonic At 12th fret should Match Normal Fretting 12th Fret. Best Way Is With A Tuner And Move The Saddle Screw Until The Light Hits Perfect on The Fretted & Harmonic at The 12th Fret.. That Would Be Amazing If It Passed That Test. I Do Not Think You Mentioned The Brand Of The One You Ended Up Going With. Who Makes It If You Don't Mind?

    Without using a scale to show to weight difference...your only speculating. If you can feel the weight of a gram or two then you are a very sensitive human. Unscientific test are easily spotted as just BSing. I am shopping for an upgrade to my original TOM. That is how your video came up on RUclips search. I am now interested and must research more on the "harmonics issue" you claim to hear, yet, we have nothing but your opinion. No sound test or comparisons. Not helpful for us looking to upgrade.

      I was not trying to say what is best for you and I don't have a scale here. I was just changing them out and thought I would film it to show what my experience had been with the 3 of them. Trust me that Wilkerson is much heavier than the other 2.If I changed my strap holders I could make it more balanced too. I say clearly at the end of the video that people will have to try this themselves. At the end of the day it's what U like on your guitar.. Thanks for watching Happy Holidays
