      @@shtfhoneybadger Thanks. The thing I'm struggling with is finding canned meat. It seems much more readily available in the US unlike here in the UK; we can only get the odd tiny can of chicken or corned beef and everything else is stuff like canned chili, casserole, korma etc. You guys seem to have huge bags and cans of everything.

    • @shtfhoneybadger
      @shtfhoneybadger  2 года назад +3

      Canned chili in particular is still a pretty good option. That's unfortunate they don't have much for canned meat. I'd have never gussed that was un common over there. I know if you don't have places similar to a Costco or Walmart Supercenters, ethnic food stores often tend to carry atleast dried goods in bulk.

    Hi! I started prepping about 2 months ago. I took a route I've never seen anyone else take lol I hope it doesn't backfire. First I bought what I first heard was going to be in short supply. Rice beans, tomato products, pastas, flour and water. I do not eat pinto beans, black beans, lentils etc so before they went through the flippen roof I bought 100 pounds of lima beans (for 35.00) now it would cost me 125.00!!! Now here's where I parted ways with all the advice I was hearing from 500 different people. I made 2 lists...food and non food , entered everything I eventually wanted to purchase and then put those lists in order of most expensive to the least expensive. When food prices us out, I wanted to be sure to have the things I would not be able to afford later. So I went for the freezer next. paid $150.00 for an on sale small freezer and used a bit of knowledge I learned from the pandemic. Look in unusual places for what you cant find in the usual places....for instance....cant find canning jars or lids? shop the most expensive grocery store you can find. RICH PEOPLE DO NOT CAN FOOD. Same thing with ramen....RICH PEOPLE DONT BUY RAMEN. When you cant find toilet paper shop office supply stores! Staples....office max.....etc. And here's the big one!!!!!!! I just bought 80 pounds of fresh chicken thighs and legs for $35.00! Try restaurant supply stores...you don't have to be a chef or restaurant owner. Gallons of ketchup for 4-5 dollars! I bought 100 pounds of ground beef right before this all started because it was on special 5lb chubs for 9.99. I had no idea what was coming straight at us. So freezer is complete. Now keeping in mind the power failure possibilities....I do live in Minnesota lol so for at least 6 months (starting any day now) my freezer and cold food is safe. The freezer is next to garage door so pack with snow and close er up! I got a small barbeque, and a butane camping stove and the fuels and coals matches and lighters....thank goodness before the shelves started emptying out. I live with only my disabled 34 year old son, so only 2 to worry about. I have hit all the what I'm calling expensive items and have now begun on the smaller ones I've been broke lately having done all this but now it should be easier to fill in all the missing items to come. TIP!!!! I don't know if you've noticed but light bulbs are climbing the food chain! get extra now incase stores start closing. EGGS!!! I don't eat eggs except in baking but i got 100 and froze them, search RUclips videos for instructions. Also Bobs mill egg replacer is great and only 5 bucks for a bag that's alot of egg. If you learn to make bread, you can make rolls ,pizza dough, tortillas, its all the same principal but get your yeast now and freeze it! remember 2020! Good luck everyone!!

      Questions... are you stocking up on hundreds of gallons of clean water to cook all of those dry items??? And how about a stronger heat source to cook them for the length of time it takes to cook them ??? Non fat dry milk from Walmart is one of the cheapest sources of protein and other good things that are in milk and you can mix the powered milk in a lot less water than they recommend.

      Spices and herbs are mandatory for cooking food. That is your game changer. They suggest you get new spices every year but honestly they don’t lose their punch that fast. Use them up and keep a good supply on hand. 30 years of cooking has taught me that. I grow my own herbs in summertime and dry them for use.

      Why is that ??? I only collect things that are going to benefit my health. Not a bunch of stuff that is actually useless. If SHTF we aren't going to be going on picnics . It's going to be survival mode. It's funny no one talks about non fat dry milk. Do you know that milk is actually one of the best sources of protein and other goodies for your body and can sustain you on its own longer than most any other single thing. And the price of it at Walmarts has hardly gone up in the last 3 years compared to everything else. I know because I but it and use it. And you don't need to add the recommended amount of water either, you use less to save your water. That's just my opinion considering I was in the military and did without a few times.

    If you have an Amish store or surplus store you can likely find bulk items cheaply. I recently priced compared vegetable and canned meat flats with walmart, Amazon and aldis and found flags cheaper on Amazon. Remember the sell buy dates on canned items is not the expiration date as long as the ingetgity of the cans have not been compromised. Also, side items such as knorr sides, rice a roni, mashed potatoes are great options. Medication and first supplies are important

      No Amish stores in my area but I've personally had good luck finding bulk around me just through Costco and Walmart for most items. When I've priced them vs others sources, including amazon, those two always have come out on top for me at least. It's a good point that the cans are actually best buy dates and not hard expiration dates but I always try to follow them for the simple fact it's best practice in my opinion. I do have some items like Mashed Potatoes stored away but currently it's pretty small and those are one of the items I need to stock more away on. With all those beans, you can easily change the flavor profile using different combinations of herbs and other seasonings. Dried seasonings last forever too. I am limited on space and budget. I took different approach.
    The gamma lids are for food products that are being used every day. So they are not airtight as they are easy to open.
    Those family emergency survival buckets are not a good idea. I was gifted with a few of them. They require a working refrigerator and stove which is not going to work in a power outage. Let's review my 30 day bucket. It has 12 family size pouches and costs $100 online. Okay, I am allergic to ingredients in 2 of the pouches so they are a waste. I prepared one of the pouches as a taste test. It was basically a one pound bag of rice. There are 3 pouches of rice. Since the bucket is only 10 pouches that I can use and it cost $100 it comes to $10 a pouch. Now 3 of the one pound bags of rice are not $10 each. It comes to $30. For $30, you can get a lot more rice than was in my bucket. Next we have the 2 pouch combo for Mac and Cheese. It equals 3 of the cheap boxes of Mac and Cheese with the orange cheese powder. It requires milk and butter to prepare. There is no way that 3 of the cheap boxes of Mac and Cheese are going to cost you $20 when they really cost 50 cents each at the store. For dessert, we have a family size instant pudding. Instant pudding is 50 cents a box in my area. It takes 2 to make it the equivalent of the pudding pouch. Let's go over the dried soup. They have lots of different brands out there. Bear Creek is the more expensive. Knorr SOPA is at the lower end for 56 cents where I live. You can always find bouillon cubes to make a simple broth and add dehydrated vegetables or other ingredients. One canister of oatmeal equals 2 of the pouches. One canister is around $3 where I live. Pancake mix is not going to be left out. You can purchase a box for less than $10. Save some money by purchasing a bucket for the hardware store and filling it up yourself.

      It's always awesome to hear everyone's different approaches !
      I didn't intended to use the Gama lids for long term storage items and the rice I'm storing in it is more for daily use. I still did want to point out though they aren't airtight because they are actually advertised as being such and I feel like for some people it could be problematic that they actually aren't when they are advertised as being so.
      I only have the food buckets as I got them at a huge discount. These will never make up any major amount of my food stores. Nothing in these buckets requires refrigeration but it does require a method to cook like a camp stove and they have to be cooked in a separate pot. I wouldn't encourage buying them and I only ended up with those two because a local place was selling them at dealer cost just to close them out. For freeze dried food in the future I will be picking up some meals that are actually cook able in the packages but don't plan on building up a large stock of them.(I previously did a video reviewing some of these) I do think it's good to have some freeze dried food though even with the extra cost to add in some more variety and because they are easier to use in some scenarios if they are the kind that can be cooked in the pouches.
      I've actually been trying out some products from Bear Creek and a few other similar brands and have been liking them so far. I plan on integrating them into my food stocks here over the next couple trips to the store.

      That's awesome and thanks for watching ! I know for me it's been a work in progress for sure. More then likely that entire bedroom for me will end up being turned into a store room at some point. And yeah, Glass has draw back on the weight and area it takes up but I think in the long term it's the better option if you have the room to store it and that's how I'm going with it. And sounds like you have your stuff squared away and ready to last for years !

  • @tonette6592

    Good job! PLEASE vac-seal or at least ziplock your pastas because although they look good forever, if pasta is exposed to air for more than a year, it will breakdown, break up and/or be gummy when boiled and keep your potato flakes airtight. Also, put your boxes of salt into plastic bags or into glass jars as it will pull moisture from the air and solidify, plus it will weep and spoil everything it runs on, including rusting your cans.
    Most beans are not complete proteins.Look into getting some grains/seeds like buckwheat and quinoa which are complete proteins, but add in barley and even millets, all of which cook quickly.
    There are vacuum chambers that work with your vac-sealer where you can use empty glass food jars with metal lids and seal them like mason jars.
    You can add dehydrated eggs or applesauce instead of eggs to the Jiffy mixes.
    Kibble dogfood and catfoods do go bad. My cats eat dfry food but I have stocked canned just in case.
    The USDA has said not to worry about dates on cans, just watch for rusted, dented or building cans. Rotate while you can, but eventually we won't be able to.
    Add oils,ghee, canned or dried cheeses.

    • @shtfhoneybadger
      @shtfhoneybadger  2 года назад +1

      Thanks and yes I did. I cleared out the previous shelves and went with this style. I just used some 90 degree angle brackets in them middle stud and white utility shelving. On the sides I ran 1x4 pine screwed into the studs along the side walls so the edges rest on the 1x4 and the middle rests on the bracket. So far it's held up great. They key I'd say is just to make sure you are in studs if you put in your own, avoid using just Anchors as much as possible.

      @@shtfhoneybadger thank you so much for explaining and telling me what you used, I think I’m going to get some of those 90 degree angle brackets tomorrow! I appreciate the advice on finding the studs as well- the last DIY project I tried (a “floating desk”) I ended up stopping my build altogether after not being able to find the studs and nothing staying out lol so that’s really practical advice. Much appreciated!

    Seal rice & etc in Mylar Bags.

    • @shtfhoneybadger
      @shtfhoneybadger  2 года назад +3

      I know that's an option, I ended up settling on the vacuum sealing jars over the Mylar though based off my research into it. While I don't believe vacuum sealing the jars has the same over all longevity as Mylar you do get a similar effect of storing the goods in essential an zero oxygen environment. I see no reason why if stored and sealed properly the jars also wouldn't last a decade or longer. I also feel though these items should be getting rotated though on a regular enough basis that nothing should actually set on a shelf twenty plus years but that's just my thoughts. Eventually I may resort to some Mylar if I do decide to store items, like say a 25lbs bag of rice for example, in one batch but it just isn't currently something I'm currently doing.

    I don’t see any canned tomatoes,or tomato paste..you can use for stews, homemade chili, soups, great for adding flavor to rice. Don’t forget seasoning. Garlic, chili, pepper, salt you will need extra flavor.

    • @shtfhoneybadger
      @shtfhoneybadger  2 года назад

      I do have seasonings, I just unintendedly omitted them when making this as they are all stored in a separate area in the kitchen. I also will say I'm lacking in the tomatoes department, my family just canned a boat load and I haven't picked them up to integrate into the pantry yet. After I do that I'll be filling any gaps with some store canned tomatoes.

      LOL, this comment makes me laugh. Stocked food is for emergencies... like if the SHTF and there's no food left in the stores. People seem to think that they are going on a picnic. You make it as simple as possible . Are you going to have a heat source or plenty of extra clean water to cook dry beans and rice and spaghetti? Are you going to have to load up your stuff and move to another location? Do you have the defense equipment to protect your food supply as hungry people will be searching for food. It's not going to be a picnic ... it's going to be a living he - - that most people never seen in their life. When you're hungry, you aren't going to need seasonings for your food.
