Racist cartoons were a problem not because of how they looked but they were meant to represent , the only thing that the father has in common with racist caricatures is the tuba lips that's it, and i guess that's why people don't have a problem with it, he isn't portrayed in a demeaning way or portray his race in a demeaning way

The cat, Pangur Bán, is named for a poem written by an unknown Irish Monk in Germany (during the Dark Ages, Irish missionaries spread out from Ireland in a reverse missionary). The poem is compares the poor laboring monk to his cat; one hunting words, the other mice. Here’s a translation by Irish Poet Seamus Heaney:
Pangur Bán and I at work,
    Adepts, equals, cat and clerk:
His whole instinct is to hunt,
Mine to free the meaning pent.
More than loud acclaim, I love
    Books, silence, thought, my alcove.
    Happy for me, Pangur Bán
    Child-plays round some mouse’s den.
Truth to tell, just being here,
    Housed alone, housed together,
Adds up to its own reward:
    Concentration, stealthy art.
    Next thing an unwary mouse
    Bares his flank: Pangur pounces.
Next thing lines that held and held
    Meaning back begin to yield.
All the while, his round bright eye
Fixes on the wall, while I
    Focus my less piercing gaze
On the challenge of the page.
    With his unsheathed, perfect nails
    Pangur springs, exults and kills.
    When the longed-for, difficult
    Answers come, I too exult.
So it goes. To each his own.
    No vying. No vexation.
    Taking pleasure, taking pains,
    Kindred spirits, veterans.
Day and night, soft purr, soft pad,
Pangur Bán has learned his trade.
Day and night, my own hard work
Solves the cruxes, makes a mark.

I would recommend The Thief and the Cobbler at some point if you haven't seen it. It is also a lesson in production issues based on budget and more. It was never officially finished although there have been some updates with storyboards and such. Still the animation is beautiful and I think it's worth a watch.

Don’t worry. You’re not alone. The design for the black monk threw me off too. During the audio commentary, one of the creators(I think it was Tom Moore) brought it up and said they did not mean offense and it would have been a better idea to have a POC design that character.

Your book is BEAUTIFUL! If you get to Dublin, the Book of Kells is displayed at Trinity College, a few pages of it changed every few months, in a darkened room with information on how it was created. Well worth a visit.

I love to see more people agreeing that Cellach (the Abbot, y'know, the stern Uncle) is kinda right. And just more appreciation for this studio. I loved seeing your genuine smiles at certain moments, and how gorgeous it is, and all the Eye symbolism! A huge delight.

There is nothing racist about that monk's design. Don't overthink it and just see the film as it was intended. Not through the ridiculously sterile and overly sensitive lense of modern standards. I'm also speaking to everyone.

The character design was based on the drawings of the books from the time period it was meant to represent. Even thought its bad representation of race, they were most likely baseing the design from how they would back then

Now I kinda want to see your reaction to another of this studio's films: The Breadwinner. It also bounches to a different artstyle in some scenes, and it's a beautiful, heartbreaking but at the same time uplifting, viewing. I think you'll also enjoy it a lot!

Secret of kells is my entire childhood, I’m glad you’re watching it! And in regards to the brother’s design, I believe that it was said that his design was meant to reflect the caricatures that you would see in many manuscripts of poc’s apologies if I made any mistakes

There are black Irish. They need rep. Yeah it’s kind of stereotypical and that is problematic. It’s absolutely a no go to go to that design I agree. :(
We need to encourage more proper black Irish rep in our media.

    • @lampad4549
      @lampad4549 2 года назад +1

His character isn't demeaning or offensive in any way besides the big lips, are we that superficial to take offense to that? And no we don't need more black rep in irish media, we certainly don't get any irish rep in black media.

I’ve got two recommendations! For more disney, try The Rescuers! It’s one of my favorites, from a weird period in the 70s where they loved making mice characters.
And for more cartoon saloon, Wolfwalkers is a lot like this movie but much more developed art-wise! I love this series!

Apparently the Northern Men are always surrounded by Norse imagery and the abbey people by Keltic symbols and motifs aka triangles and circles.

Not all pagans are Vikings. The English and Catholics invaded Ireland and almost entirely destroyed their lives and culture. Just saiyan.
My family came to Australia and many came to America because of what happened as a result. It is really hurtful what happened

"Do I read? No!" 🤣🤣🤣🤣 I really love that book you made, it's so cool.
This is a great video. Unfortunately, Brother Assoua reminded me of Mr. Popo from Dragonball Z. Not sure how this character design happened in 2009.

The real Book of Kells is roughly from the same era as the Lindisfarne Gospels, and arguably even more famous. Why do none of the reviewers of this film get that the animation style is based on the drawings in the real book? The film hints at that with all the subtlety of a sledgehammer. Even the flowers and snowflakes are literally ornaments from illustrations! Comparing the animation style of this film with the style of Song of the Sea or any other film makes no sense, because those animations aren't based on a pre-existing source. Also, the playfulness with the 'rules of perspective' is because people in the early middle ages didn't understand how to draw perspective yet. Every thing about the art in this film is deliberate, because it's based on a real book and its real history and mythology. The racial diversity of the monks symbolise all the different cultural influences that went into early European book illumination.
The Book of Kells is considered one of Ireland's national treasures, and as such permanently on display in the Trinity College Library in Dublin Ireland.

I feel like when u draw overly cartoon looking people you are gunna get a bit of the stereo types in there. It’s kinda hard to avoid and if the character is otherwise a good character I think it’s alright. I’m of Italian decent and ya a lot of us have the hooked noses and bigger hair so if we are drawn like that eh 🤷🏻‍♀️
Would I like them to be more flattering sure haha but it’s not a big deal if we aren’t. If it’s the style of the artist then I can either watch it or not but I’m going to accept it
I guess my point was that they didn’t make him super stereotypical with bad characteristics. I don’t think they meant anything bad about it, tho I admire your noticing and trying to think more about it- that’s nice if you

It can be a little annoying when reactors relate everything they’re seeing in one movie, to characters or scenes from other movies. But now I am going to do it and say the monk that teaches the young boy about ink looks just like Willie Nelson, lol.
