Gary, I have been smithing for 45 years and find I always get some good tips from your videos. Thanks for sharing. Bob Bergman, Postville Blacksmith Shop, Blanchardville WI, USA
Funny the people you come across on RUclips (while watching a RUclipsr video from across the pond no less!) that are in your own backyard but you would never meet in real life. I've been out your way a hundred times when traveling to Dodgeville. That area of WI is quite rural and beautiful. Lucky you!
You cannot beat a hand made gift. I would be proud as punch to make a set even 1/8th that nice. It wouldn't really matter because it's the thought that counts.
Great gift idea. Definitely file that away for next Valentines Day. Edgunsuk mentioned wire brushing at black heat, I have seen people use a brass brush when the item is at black heat and it gives a brass/gold(ish) tone to it. Anyway another good video.
Ah, true love. I made my wife a hand-forged rose with thorns and a leaf and stuck it in a oak block years ago. She keeps it on her desk in front of her at work.
HI Gary is there a possibility of you making a short video on your forge construction, is it a bottom draught or side draught and which would be your preference. I am going to build a forge at home and I would like to get it right first time . The videos that you post are very entertaining and informative and the things that you make are a first class.
I’m afraid I have no real idea! I have never made one, I can’t be bothered with all that hammering, I just buy one if I need one. However, if I was to make one I would probably start with a lorry half shaft, we used to make various tools from that when I was an apprentice. Good tough steel.
What do you want to do with it? I use a small club hammer, a large club hammer, a shoe turning hammer, a cross pein and various size sledge hammers. The only one I could really do with is a big cross pein.
I would start with a 2lb ball pein and see how it goes, you might buy an expensive hammer and find it’s too heavy or too light. Spend some time working with a cheap everyday hammer and see what suits your needs before either making or buying one.
Great Present I have managed to make one of these from some flat stock as I don't have shoes, what on earth is that thing in your swage block with the mushroom tops????? Steve
Great video as always there Gary. Nice one. What lacquer do you use? I've wanted to lacquer my work for a while now but wasn't sure what one to use. Cheers
