They don't need air but if anything besides air gets into their lungs they die.

so, lemme get this straight. about sonic, mario, and crash bandicoot's reactions to water, i mean. mario can breathe underwater infinitely in most games, mainly the sidescrollers. sonic can breathe in the water, but only for a limited amount of time, and also can instantly die from it if the water is out of bounds or something, if you get what i mean. and as for crash, he instantly metastasizes the moment he touches water, unless he's wearing scuba gear or something and that only happens in certain levels of certain games. interesting. oh, i almost forgot about spyro. in the very first game, spyro reacts to water just as crash bandicoot does, of course not always instantly dying from it. sometimes he takes only a single point of damage. usually depends on if the water's out of bounds or not. and sometimes, he'll instantly die from water in bounds, but that's a random effect. and in most later games, he can swim and will not be hurt by the water. hm. these reactions are quite different. very interesting.
