I only allow the closest people in my life to hear this blessing of an OST. I hold this OST and game dear to my heart. As a kid, this would be the only game my mother would like to play couch co-op with me. Now, anytime my ears experience any moment of euphoria, they hold dearly to that sound. The amount of euphoria I reach from this OST is unreachable by any other form of entertainment.
Your mom would LIKE to play one the most challenging games on the platform??? Wow, she must be a sports person or something; my mom wouldn't beat 1-1 level of Mario, because most adult people of 80-90s wouldn't develop reflexes required to operate a gamepad. It's like asking a random stranger to: "hey, pal, would you like to play 4-hands piano with me?" - "Sure, I've never tried it before, but I guess I'll figure it out in a few minutes repeating after you!"
Kyd really stretches FM synthesis to its limit. I'm endlessly impressed by his percussion sounds. Every track has an amazing drums, from the bongos in "Moving Trucks" to the gabber kick Kyd uses throughout the soundtrack.
*25 years later and still , i never get bored to hear this soundtrack* !! SEGA 's hardware combined with Jesper Kyd 's talent created a magical electronic-soundtrack !! (These are the kind of things that make me so proud for being a MegaDrive/Genesis owner back then)
I guess you could still play this in a club, and no one would've guessed this is from a video game. Excellent compositions. I wonder what would Yuzo Koshiro say about this, he's also excellent with this sound chip.
Holy shit how did he get a Genesis to sound like this?! This sounds like it could fit right in with his soundtrack for Hitman Contracts. I wonder why this isn't brought up more when discussing great Genesis/16-bit music
@pobert-eii Time Trax apparently had an incredibly awesome sound driver made by one of Tim Follin's friends that was used by it and no other game, so it's highly likely that Kyd had a similar custom sound driver.
The "Animal Boss" track at 55:01 kicks ass, but it has a loop that is one of the coolest parts of the whole fucking soundtrack. That riff that kicks off the song is such a groove, and it's pretty brief, but then the whole piece takes a detour all the way until 57:58 when you can begin to hear the opening riff from the start again. _Holy shit_ it goes hard when it gradually slides back in for the down-beat. SO fucking awesome.
@@Sh-hg8kf 4 channels but only 3 can be used simultaneously. 2 waves and one noise. Edit: Apparently I am wrong and all four can be used. I don't think any commercially released Genesis games actually made use of all four.
Even today Jesper Kyd makes some nice Classic music on games like Assassin's Creed games, but I love his more older materials because I love Electronic music the most. (Mainly Synthpop, Synthwave, Electropop, Techno, Acid House, Ambient, Electro, Psy/GOA Trance, Hard Techno/Trance)
This is an amazing soundtrack! Although, Jesper Kyd really went insane on the FM feedback (FM feedback causes a lot of high pitch noise at high levels), although I heard the Genesis had a low pass filter on it, so that would probably curb it a little. Still, amazing soundtrack!
It's epic, fantastic and pleasurable!!!!!!! Firstly I had played this game when I was 3y old. And this soundtrack, combined with great artistically graphics, had hypnotised me so much, that I was played this game, wondering about what music and graphics goed to be in next levels, having pleasure in same time when I was playing. Maybe for me the best game for the Genesis with Contra Hard Corps. This game was hard like hell but fun, crazy, and allow batman antagonists to shiw their cs in a crazy vision of cartoony dirty way. Love thatvgame so much. 💓 best batman game for me ... the ost was just too much advanced for its time like Sor3.
@@chinossynthesizer705 the sound chip on the Genesis, a YM2612 (for model 1's, anyway). It also has an SN7818, for SMS compatibility and to have a whopping 10 channels on the Genesis (in practice anyway, it actually has 9). Kyd just didn't use those extra square channels the SN provides, probably to save processing power or space. Kyd does know about the SN, he used it for a lot of the games sound effects, if not every single one. Also nobody used extra sound chips for Genesis carts, for whatever reason Small note for the Game Gear, it added stereo to the SN7818. I'm uncertain if the Genesis has that stereo as well (the FM channels do though, but that's pretty obvious). What I can say is that the SMS doesn't have stereo, even if the song files dare say otherwise
I thought that MD/Genesis music isn't really chiptune because you don't do the crazy C64 stuff like drums and some other sounds on one channel and you don't use every channel almost all the time. I thought.
You know the soundtrack's made entirely of fucking bangers when the opening title theme goes for *9 minutes.*

Check out savaged regime
He even managed to get resonant sounds out of the OPN2, and it is said that FM is incapable of it normally.
