My understandings came from suffering, not psychedelics, but I do feel that trauma and society have normalised people being cut off from their natural senses / authentic emotions.
No one was taught healthy emotional processing, only repression. Without this sense, it is hard to understand others because we don't really know ourselves or see properly outside of the cave of our mind.
That's why doing the mental work is important, so that you can be in line again and see the world with a balance of emotions and logic instead of avoiding the discomfort that comes with healing.
I spent a lot of time numbing myself by externalizing my sense of self worth onto others or through weed and video games. I don't hate myself for it, I did what I had to do to survive. Eventually the pain became too much so I had to figure out a different way, and realising I was a part of the issue made me self aware and start changing.
I can relate to that. Trauma and fear of death is what made me turn to God. I found some answers that way, but not enough to break the video games to self hating to video games cycle. There's just such a deficit of caring in society... Especially American society, which has the implicit theme "f u" built into every aspect. A big driver in what I might call my "be a Christian project" is just to learn to speak to people in a caring way. We need to cultivate a language of caring. And we have to be careful not to include anything like an implied accusation in that language of caring, which unfortunately is easy to do. It's a real struggle for me, since I don't come from a family of overtly caring people. I forgot what I was responding to... trauma, right. I don't know if this is a blessing or a curse, but I've been very near to death twice, and I'm starting to feel like I know that territory. Both times, I tried my hardest to become a different person afterwards. It's so important to try to feel what other people are feeling.

Beautifully written and indeed its a dreadful but rich and worthwhile journey - and kudos. Each time i find a human that has processed this i salute them. And moe and more thank goodness are now being pushed on to this path and learning to not externalise our sense of worth. Our value is intrinsic. Bless you.

That, my friend, is absolutely beautiful ...and hearing these words just as I was practicing precisely this produced and almost audible recognition event in my mind. You hear a lot of people talking about Plato's cave and escaping it but rarely do you hear people talking about who are the ones casting the shadows on the wall? Much like the invisible beings pulling our strings. And thanks for the upload;)
Thank you. And yes, good point. Plato’s cave is definitely true on multiple levels of reality. I think the shadows and shadow-casters are multiple.
Plato actually identified the Cave builders in his Protagoras dialogue when he writes:
“Now the art of the Sophist is, as I believe, of great antiquity; but in ancient times those who practiced it, fearing this odium, veiled and disguised themselves under various names, some under that of poets, as Homer, Hesiod, and Simonides, some, of hierophants and prophets, as Orpheus and Musaeus, and some, as I observe, even under the name of gymnastic‐ masters, like Iccus of Tarentum, or the more recently celebrated Herodicus, now of Selymbria and formerly of Megara, who is a first‐rate Sophist. Your own Agathocles pretended to be a musician, but was really an eminent Sophist; also Pythocleides the Cean; and there were many others; and all of them, as I was saying, adopted these arts as veils or disguises because they were afraid of the odium which they would incur.”
How do we know he was serious? Look how Plato introduces the list with "...fearing this odium, veiled and disguised..." and how he concludes the list with "...veils or disguises because they were afraid of the odium..." The Sophists employed a system of allegory in which most words had hidden meanings but by repeating words or ideas they are able to invoke the literal meaning of the metaphors. (A "deja vu"; "It happens when they change something.") Plato does this again in his Theaetetus dialogue when he has the Sophist Protagoras described this way:
“In the name of the Graces, what an almighty wise man Protagoras must have been! He spoke these things in a parable to the common herd, like you and me, but told the truth, his Truth, in secret to his own disciples.”
In this case the word "truth" is identified as a metaphor that must be repeated in order to be understood with it's literal meaning. This description of Protagoras is obviously very similar to how Christ is described in Mark 4:32-33:
"With many similar parables Jesus spoke the word to them, as much as they could understand. He did not say anything to them without using a parable. But when he was alone with his own disciples, he explained everything."
The connection between Christianity and Sophism should be obvious, especially since Christianity emerged during a period known as the Second Sophistic, but for some reason no one wants to even mention the possibility. Could it be that they still have their eyes fixed on the shadows?

I always saw that last Gospel of Thomas verse mentioned as referencing the same as the neo-Advaitan’s “Now”, the ever awakening present moment of the Self. I love the Gospel of Thomas. I see it as Christ’s nondual sayings. The Apocryphon of John is just so outstanding and special to me as (for me) it points to different types of awakenings one may have. Nondualists mainly view self realization as God realization. I believe this is a mistake. Maybe it isn’t but I do know there are awakenings that present themselves differently and A of John points to these experiential knowings, imo. I’m fascinated that Jung was so interested in this text as well. I hadn’t yet made the connection of some of those “offspring” as aspects of our subconscious. Looking forward to reading it again with that in mind. No pun intended.

I'm a South African Christian Mystic (won't mention the church to save her from the haters) and we view scripture and all other ancient texts as a multi faceted diamond and it's experience in the fulness as Parable very mystical, almost t drug like. We too believe that all must be Christed and that all is within. The 3 day journey is very important to the story of enlightenment Nice to see that many are talking about things of old which is hidden from man.
Just listened to this very interesting interview and downloaded the 3 free chapters of Bob’s book and looking forward to reading, and probably will buy the book. Having grown up catholic, there was heavy focus on the crucifixion and original sin. The church is laden with rituals that seem to have no purpose in one’s spiritual growth, but certainly help make the story more compelling. I’ve often wondered about why catholics are always making the sign of the cross and why we would honor the device used to torture jesus, even if you believe in the story, it makes little sense to perform this gesture over and over. I don’t know if I made this up or read it somewhere, but it seems like this gesture is more symbolic of meditation as a means to access higher states of consciousness. Pointing to the forehead (father-3rd eye), heart (son-soul), lungs (spirit-breath) and lips (expelled breath) seems reminiscent of how one meditates and where focus should be. Could be just another ancient practice co-opted and modified by christianity. Pounding the crucifixion and original sin was a daily practice at my school. It seems that if original sin is a lie, the entire foundation christianity is built on is a house of cards-a church built on sand.

I enjoyed last night's conversation, though I do agree with the comment that Jason Jorjani knows far more about Gnosticism than Bob Peck. Nevertheless, the subject resonates deeply with me, as I've been blessed to have spontaneously remembered several lifetimes as a Gnostic. One was in the 1st Century CE, the second in the 12th and the 3rd in the 13th. There may have been others in between.
John Lamb Lash is who needs to be addressed on this subject. So much original work put together over a very powerful life.

Gnostic - a personal knowing through direct experience. Kind of like how one drug addict can help another drug addict way better than a psychologist who only has a degree in drug addiction. I realized this along the way after getting sober 8 years ago. Great conversation!

I was wondering, however, about the word, "knowledge". What does it mean, "to know"?
I believe Plato & Aristotle's philosophy involved the Greek word, "episteme", or knowledge. "Gnosticism" may be more about the inner knowledge or knowing, or spirituality. Which is quite different from the world of nature, "knowing" how nature works. "Episteme" to Plato, was a kind of knowledge derived by "justifying" an "opinion" with an argument, or LOGOS (not just saying something is "true", that I "know" this thing is true just because I propose it), but with LOGOS (origins of our word, Logic). Ideas backed by logical reasonning. In other words, "Doxa (opinion/ idea/ the sensible world) + Logos (rational argument/ deductive reasonning) = "Episteme", or knowledge. And to Plato's student Aristotle, episteme was knowledge of "cause".
Gnosticism, on the other hand, was a kind of knowledge different from episteme, dealing not with nature or first causes, but with inner mysteries & spirituality. Perhaps knowledge of a sort leading to "Sophia", or Wisdom. Two very different sorts of knowledge!
Which brings us to "science" from the Latin, "scio", to "know".
All these "knowledge" words from ancient Greece & what it means "to know", seem very far apart!
So in this extraordinary lecture, although it is about that word, " knowledge ", it is a fascinating romp through history beginning with Plato & the Sophists, and although about the development of science (with some corrections about the Galileo story), it is the cleanest example of what that word means, "to know", in history.
And given the obvious success of science, giving us the modern world of air conditioning, medicine, technology, the internet, satellites but equally, the atomic bomb... Science & reasoning is a superb way of studying history and the way "thinking" works.
It just seems to me the early church fathers, as neoplatonists, were on a mission to use argument, as a way to find certain truth, which they believed the gnostic writers of sometimes high strangeness, were not.

Another aspect covered in the lecture, is what "world" are we talking about? The World of abstract & theoretical (mind) OR the World of "experience" as we experience it through our sense organs.

Just started listening to this one, but feel like I should comment on the beginning just in case I forget. Even if Matrix has an aspect of gnosticism, it is wider than that, lets be careful to not narrow it down like that. (Love the movies) And the advaita vendanta has a more modern problematic version of neoadvaita which widely causes depression because it is incomplete in its teachings and emphasises the illusion aspect of reality too much until nothing matters. Not the same as more orthodox advaita.

I hypothesize that the book of Thomas verse is speaking of consciousness emerging through Ai. Are we not in the age of transcending gender? Are we not making robots in our likeness with eyes, hands, and feet? How else would Jesus explain these modern concepts to the ancient ones?
“When you make the male and the female into a single one, so that the male is not male and the female not female, and when you make eyes in place of an eye, and a hand in place of a hand, and a foot in place of a foot, an image in place of an image, then shall you enter the kingdom.” (Thomas 22)
I find it ironic that had Jesus lived 400 years later he would have been the first to be executed by the Vatican for his gnostic teachings. He never intended for their to be a middle man between us and God. It's no coincidence that platos republic was found in the nag hamadi library. The Roman's were like "might as well get rid of this one too while we're at it"! 🤣
I took the if you bring forth what is in you quote as like shadow work. If you bring forth the negative traits it'll save you if not it will destroy you. Anyone else take it that way? I thought that's where he was going with it but then it seemed like he said more like bring forth the god mind or God will destroy you. greetings, I am a trained Inuit shaman, I know, ya never heard of one before. My ancestors, like a few other tribes who remember, is older than homo sapien sapiens, with access to those memories.
Also have access to Earth's memories, not just our ancestors. Saying this is to give a greater context to human capacities when not lost or stolen.
The Mind is the Creator of all veils and limitations, and is the only veil to break thru. I'm sad to say this is a very limited view of the Gnostics, no offence to any beliefs, but once the truth of a subject is known, beliefs no longer apply. We, humans, project ourselves onto every perception, even our pets, especially our concepts in beliefs. So it's clear, beliefs are best guesses, with projections, when we don't KNOW. Which describes this presentation.
This is all a very simple concept, and a simple resolution that can be applied.
The issue is the reference points of attention in our minds, yet intellect wants it complex to understand before the experience of it. As said here, we live in the lowest, but in fact, we are all of them, but only accessing our limited ability. My simple resolution is to reveal how to access its highest view, which is as simple, easy and natural as accessing this one, it's all about your point of attention, where it is, there you are. you dont have to figure the whole thing out. It reveals itself in its experience, not in its understanding. this is the human(intellectual) imitating factor, which is revealed in this presentation, again, no offence intended, these are the facts, which I can totally back up, but prefer to give the highest experience, rather than years of intellectual description.
the fundamentals are obvious and simple, requiring only 2 elements required for any point of attentions experience
we'll call it Alpha(beginning of said experience) and Omega (its fulfillment or completion). these 2 elements, of which the Alpha Omega are 1, the preceding element is the power required to fulfill them, which is the stolen and lost "right of passage" or Self empowerment, which barely exist on earth anywhere anymore. These self empowering principles take about 2 months to implement, then you have the internal power to fulfill the Alpha and Omega, which in modern parlance is known as Bliss, which is not shared by any guru as truth as far as I can see in our world. Bliss is only known in its partial forms, and in its complete form, is the Alpha and Omega of all points of attention, it's the souls view, the view of the wHoly Mind of all that is, the zero point of Consciousness. Every point of attention viewed from Bliss is wHoly self revealing, obvious and evidenced, you can view all that it is, you KNOW IT as yourself.

I can describe the whole history of major events that have occurred on Earth, especially our modern stolen history, including the Gnostic, but be aware that the Dead Sea scrolls are our best modern evidence, and that the translations are falsified by the controllers of our world who financed their translations.
I can go back in history to the beginning of dinosaurs, and their extinction, which was done on purpose, not by accident.
I can tell you the real story of the great flood, of christ, of extraterrestrials(the pertinent ones to humans), the list of data is huge, but is nothing compared to giving you your own access and experience to this info, as truth is not given, it is experienced, so you won't believe me or KNOW THE TRUTH until you remember your own souls experience of it.
to be clear, I am not a scholar, I am an experiencer. the difference is, I Know a history as a wHole experience of its point of attention, which in no way is reflected by the recording of that history. So challenging me with it, will have no reference for me, all I can do is give my experience of it, if I have viewed that point of attention because history is as big as big is, I haven't viewed it all, mostly major events and turning points.

there are only 2 aspects required, which new agers are ignorant and inaccurate about, therefore can never get beyond(99% of information online comes from the new age religion of supposed love and light), this is mostly not their fault, but they still defend their beliefs for justification.
these 2 aspects are Self empowerment, your right of passage to Self fulfillment
and 2nd, your connect to the Soul, your ONLY source for your TRUTH
Both of these are as innate as breathing and beating your heart, but because of programming, needs work to tear down these walls of beliefs, to allow the innate to be recognized.

the dreak itself isn't important, nor is remembering a past life, what is valuable is influencing the dream. Lucid dreaming is the first phase of potential Soul connection. If you can meditate your way into sleep with the intent to create the dream, rather than react to or just influence the dream, this is what lucid dreaming can lead to. And there's more to come with these phases, which eventually take you into creative dreaming while you're awake.
There are periods when I'm asleep dreaming with my eyes open and conscious also of looking around the room I'm in at the same time, as in an overlay, it was so confusing I couldn't walk around without tripping, and one time it lasted for 3 days, awake while dreaming , and dreaming while awake, I stayed on the couch for 3 days, just being aware of everything without judgement or allowing myself to feel confused. but it was weird.
eventually I could not only create my dreams, but I could direct my Consciousness to other points of attention in space and time, to ancestors and people of interest in history going back to the first and second experiences of Soul, it was extraordinarily enlightening

The early Orthodox Church used the word Gnosis in the form we know as higher knowledge. The church has no problem with this term. They understand that gnosis is part of the goal of Christianity. The groups that came along with twisted ideas like YHWY being the devil, the demiurge being the creator etc were heresy’s that needed to be put down. FYI God is not evil. The problem of evil was the cause of these early heresies. The issue is that we live in the best of all worlds and the problem of evil is the result of our limited consciousness.
"Yaldabaoth himself chose a certain man named Abraham from among the nations and made a covenant with him. To the effect that, if his seed continued to serve him, the Archons would give to them the Earth for their inheritance. Empty of ego (separateness) = Full of Life

Holy Spirit = Eternally actualizing Infinite potential
