चिपको आन्दोलन (Chipko Movement)- यहाँ चिपको आन्दोलन का विवरण देना असंगत नहीं होगा जो सन् 1973 में उत्तरांचल के चमोली जिले के रेनी नामक गाँव में पहली बार शुरू हुआ जब वहाँ के पर्वतीय क्षेत्रों में शासकीय ठेकों के अन्तर्गत वनों की कटाई हेतु आये लोगों को वृक्ष काटने से रोकने के लिए वहाँ के ग्रामीण लोगों, विशेषकर महिलाओं तथा बच्चों ने वृक्षों को घेर लिया था। उनके इस आन्दोलन को चिपको आन्दोलन (Chipko Andolan) के नाम से जाना जाता है। धीरे-धीरे यह आन्दोलन उत्तर प्रदेश के अन्य भागों में भी फैल गया जहाँ इसी प्रकार के रचनात्मक संघर्ष द्वारा लोगों ने वृक्षों को कटने से बचाया। अब तो चिपको आन्दोलन ने देशव्यापी रूप धारण कर लिया है। कहीं-कहीं तो चिपको शब्द ही में इतनी ताकत रही है कि लोगों ने पेड़ों से बिना चिपके ही वृक्षों को बचाया है। आज यह आन्दोलन देश के विभिन्न भागों में विभिन्न रूपों में तेजी से फैलता जा रहा है।
Chipko Movement - Forest wealth is made available to industries at a price much lower than the market value, while the local residents are deprived of them. The 'Chipko Movement' is the result of a policy of separating local residents from forests. This movement took place in the early 1970s from an incident in a village called 'Reni' of Garhwal in the high mountain range of the Himalayas. The dispute started between the lumber contractor and the local people as he was given the right to cut trees near the village. On a certain day the men of the contractor came to cut down the tree while the men resident there were not there. Without any fear, the women immediately reached there and, by filling (clinging) the trees in their arms, they prevented the men of the contractor from cutting the trees. Finally, the contractor closes his work.
