    love my 230! Iv had 2 and they are great reliable trail bikes. uncork the airbox, bigger jets, and a new exhaust really opens her up!

    Really great video! I would have NEVER thought a CRF230F could even come close to hanging with a XR250R! That's very impressive for the 230F. You know, I almost bought a 230F, but found a deal on a '99 XR250R. And I must say, the XR is one heck of a great bike! The engine especially, is a real gem.

    I just sold a nice, well tuned 98 XR250 with jet kit, uni filter and slip on. I now have an 06 CRf230 with the same mods and one tooth up on the rear sprocket, I genuinely like the 230 much better on every level, bike is crisp and pulls hard, plus the styling is much better with lots of after market accessories available for the 230.

For the wheels! I did not offer less and I have the stock wheels also which are going back on if you have the chance buy the 400 it’s much better than the 250

    This was very good. Why not a full review of the CRF230F? You own it and it would be a great comparison to the CRF250X, especially for those of us trying to decide which of those two bikes to buy. Of particular interest would be an assessment of the maintenance on the CRF230F after your review of the 250X

  • @captainpegs07

    Hey Jim! So, I'm a 40 yr old who used to put on mega miles using motorcycles as primary transportation for several years. I'm getting back into it after a spinal fusion and want to do 45% slow single track dirt, 45% open dirt roads, and 10% 2-lane blacktop. Riding intensity I would describe as scenery touring/exploring. At 6' tall and 225lbs, would you recommend a plated 250R, a plated 230F, or simply a crf250l? Having a rack for fuel and stuff would be beneficial; not sure if there's aftermarket for those on the 230F. Maybe there's a bike I'm overlooking? Do you have any suggestions? Happy Holidays!

    • @TortureTestMagazine
      @TortureTestMagazine  6 лет назад +3

      +captainpegs07 thanks for watching! I haven't ridden the 250L so I can't really comment, but my XR kills it for all three of those compared to any other bike I've ridden. Just one major downside which is kick-starting. I get it when people say "just suck it up and grow a pair" because I used to think the same thing about kick-starting when I was injury free. Now I've got two knees with meniscus damage and one knee with no ACL, so a spill down a hill, picking the bike up out of a ditch, and then spending a minute kicking is game over for the day. I'm sure others can relate. I still get out on the XR quite often and I still love it, but electric start is coming into fashion for me!

    The 96-04' XR250R was a considered competition race bike, in its early days.
    With its' "CR" front and rear disks brakes, 4- valve RFVC "hemi" head, stainless steel header and performance muffler, in a light weight 239LBS.
    The XR250R is lighter faster, and stronger the the CRF230 in stock form.
    Try installing a $200 set of used XR400R forks and clamps on the XR250. It will probably out perform the modified CRF230 forks.
    Scott Summer actually turned faster times on a 280cc XR250R than his XR600 race bike in GNCC, according to a 1999 Dirt bike magazine article.

  • @roycedeaton2161

    CHM makes a great rev box for the 230. The muffler they have help it alot as well.

    Hey Frickin Jim, love your channel, descovered it last week and have watched pretty much all your videos! I am looking for a bike, and it will be mostly for trail riding, through trees, bumps, little logs etc... I would like to do a little dirt road riding too. Which bike would you suggest to me? A stock 2011 CRF230F or a stock 2001 XR250R, both are the same price and both in very good contition. Thanks!

    • @TortureTestMagazine
      @TortureTestMagazine  7 лет назад +2

      Thanks for watching! The CRF230F will be very good for just loafing around, getting from point A to point B, and there's almost zero frustration involved with owning and riding that bike (Zero maintenance + Electric start). It's all fun with the CRF230F. Performance figures aside, because the XR250R is better in that aspect, I'd recommend the CRF230F.

    • @TortureTestMagazine
      @TortureTestMagazine  7 лет назад +3

      The XR250R will definitely fit better, and you'll appreciate the far superior suspension and noticeably stronger engine. It's just that dang kickstarting. Everyone complains about it eventually. Any chance you can test ride both of them?

    • @TortureTestMagazine
      @TortureTestMagazine  7 лет назад +1

      +Tim Hall sure, I'm 5'10 140lb. On the 230, you'd want to move the handlebars forward and maybe even move the footpegs back a bit using relocation brackets. That will effectively simulate a full size bike

    one of the reasons for the xr250rs speed on straights is because it has a 13 th at the front and a 48 and the crf230f has a 13 th at the front and a 50 at the back this is why it is better for hills

  • @gunner4373

    Dang! I was under the impression the CRF230/250 L&F would be similar in speed and power to the RM and CR125's just with more bottom end, but those 125's would absolutely destroy an XR250 from idle clear up to braaap lol

      +Peyton McAdams Hey Peyton, wish I knew for sure what bend. They don't say, but I agree I love them. Super great for an aggressive ride. All I know is they are Renthal OEM take-off from a CRF450X and they are missing the crossbar haha. Should be able to find some OEM CRF450X bars floating around eBay

    How is it that the CRF is more tossable when the XR is lighter?
    A CRF250F would be more fair having a 4-valve aircooled engine just like the XR did.
