Disclaimer: I am not Jimi Hendrix. I do admire the man and he has been a huge influence. I put this Pedalboard together so I can get more into his "Live Workspace". He did a lot with so little and it's fascinating to see and hear how he used his tools.
The Pedal Order is set to Jimi's famous Live Performance on January 1st, 1970 with the Band Of Gypsys. If you look up the picture of the thumbnail online, you can clearly see it goes Guitar - Wah - Octavio - UniVibe - Amp

This video is like going to a candy store and tasting all your favorite candies. As a lifelong Hendrix fan, and guitar player, you have nailed Jimi's tones beyond anything I thought possible. And don't sell yourself short. You play Jimi's songs like you own them. And you give a tutorial on how to get the tone for all our favorites. Thank you and respect.
Thank you! I'm glad you enjoyed the video. I really appreciate the compliment 🙏🏻
I agree Dude's in the Hendrix groove.
Yessir you are spot on especially with that Univibe & fuzz play on Brother 😎🎸
I feel like Jimi's board is like a basic collection of herbs and spices to to create perfect musical meal
Definitely. Some of the best dishes don't need a lot of ingredients.
This is BY FAR the most authentic sounding demonstration of how to achieve Hendrix’s tone. Pretty incredible! Bravo.
Thanks! 👏🏻
The Funky Vibes are truly unbelievable. I own a '68 Tiny Vibe and I finally have THAT sound. Every model is so cool in their own way!
I agree! I also have the 69 and I plan on eventually getting the Tiny Vibe 68.
Yea pretty close to the original Univox Uni-Vibe, I have the MXR Uni-Vibe, sounds pretty close, but not as good as the
Funky Vibe.
Out of all the RUclips Hendrix channels this could be the most authentic channeling
Thanks! I really appreciate that. Hendrix has definitely been one of my biggest influences on the guitar.
Millstap is that guy when it comes to jimi’s tone and playing in a lot of ways, this is definitely a great demonstration as well
You certainly got his tone. 1st class .
Like you said: "He did a lot with so little" - and with these pedals you nail the sound perfectly! Thanks a lot for demonstrating it really works - not to forget: your playing, which is dead on as well, certainly helps!
Thank you! I really appreciate that 🙏🏻
dude you really nailed that jimi hendrix tone! thats amazing! and you also play really great! a lot of people like to downplay Strats, but to be able to truly master one is a hard deed! JH, along with Ritchie Blackmore and SRV, was one of the few guys that were able to make the most out of a Strat, his sound was just SO good!
Thanks man! I really appreciate that! I've always played a Strat. It's the guitar I learned on. I always feel very comfortable playing a Strat.
Rory Gallagher too!
I somewhat debated myself whether to watch your vid at all. Then I took a look at your pedalboard and thought "No way." Then I listened... Man! I couldn't have been more wrong. Congrats! You not only nailed the sound, but also the feeling. I think, Jimi would have applauded, too.
Thanks, I really appreciate that! 🙏🏻
Dude crush your set up is really like Hendrix I’m amazed with your sound and I looking forward to listening to more of your playing. 🎸🎛🔉
Great Job!
I’m 60 years old and was practicing Hendrix when I was 15. Great music is timeless. Keep practicing . Sounds really cool.
Thanks! 🤘🏻🎸
You nailed it man. Great playing.
Dude this was a lot of fun to watch. Your playing is great and the gear is sick
Thanks dude! Yeah, it's so much fun to play through this setup! I'm glad you enjoyed the video! 🤘🏻
So fantastic how Jimi discovered the secret so long ago and this a beautiful tribute great work
Thank you! 🙏🏻
I could listen to that for hours. Great playing, man. Imagine what Jimi could have done with that rig.
He used better stuff than this rig, so…
Debatable. Those pedals were in their developmental infancy when Jimi was playing them. Quite often Jimi wasn't happy with his sound. Plenty of teething problems.@@laurentperez5229
Thanks! Yeah, that's where I tried to put my head space at. He did wonders!
@@laurentperez5229
He really didn’t.
Especially the Uni-Vibe.
The Silicon Fuzz Face is pretty close to the same. Jimi used BC108’s, because that’s what Mayer used from early 67’ forward, in all of them, because it moved the temperature issue.
Mayer’s Octavia, was pretty much the same circuit, if not exactly the same.
Sabbadius makes far better Uni Vibes, at least they’re all high quality, or he’ll exchange it.
Vintage Vibes are so different, and don’t get the speed or throb that modern ones can, while modern ones can sound exactly like the best Vintage models, some with options to have a more 68’ type one(usually more throb, used by Jimi), or a more 69’ one(usually less throb, used by Gilmour).
The preamps are just better, switches are better and it’s quite a bit smaller.
Don’t know why they can’t make smaller, and more affordable, expression pedals, that still work as well.
Jimi wouldn’t need those Marshalls for venue sound either, so who knows what he’d have used. Maybe still a Marshall, but he was always looking for cool effects, and new stuff.
I think he’d have had a board more like Gilmour eventually did, and he’d have been much happier with the leaps in technology for performing live as well.
@@CorbCorbin Of course, we're looking for the Hendrix sound, but MXR format reissues are much better than Hendrix's Octavia, as is the mini version of the Fuzz Face, much better than all those old Fuzz Faces that sell for $2-3,000. Ditto for the Sabbadius, which sounds much better than a vintage UniVibe, which can also be found at crazy prices... I had a Sabbadius for a long time, very good UniVibe-like sound, but absolutely no UniVibe-like depth of throb. I have great respect for Sabbadius' work, but today an Argenziano gives me much more fidelity in what I hear from a real UniVibe. In fact, some have made the comparison with an original with 100% identical sound. So no, for me, chip pedals can't compete with high-quality boutique originals or clones... The Hendrix-type sound is there, but no fidelity of the original sound, sorry to say.
Sounds that make my soul happy!
❤
Great playing and great demo. You were right to pay homage to the man and to the technique. Jimi's heart and soul was about love and freedom.
Thanks, I really appreciate it 🙏🏻
Your playing is fantastic!
That board is perfect!
🎸🎸🎸🎸
Thanks! I really appreciate it 🙏🏻
Glad I clicked the video! Awesome playing & rig man! Cheers 🤟🏼😎
Thanks! 🤘🏻🎸
I've got an old Vox 847 from the mid-nineties. It only runs on batteries. But man, that filter sweep is INTENSE!
Nice. Yeah, especially in the higher register. It can be pretty Ear Piercing 😎
Great sounds! Great playing! Authentic Hendrix tm 😜
Thanks! I appreciate that 😁
Well bang goes the idea idea that the fuzzface must go first in the chain. Epic sounds, lovely playing. Im jealous of that funk vibe!
Thanks! This wah (VOX V847-A) has a Buffer on the Output jack, which is why it works well 1st. I've tried a TrueBypass wah and it works better after the fuzz.
Your playing is very nice indeed. Enjoying it a lot
absolutely beautiful
Thats pretty amazing playing and tone !
Thanks man! I really appreciate that 🙏🏻
Great sound..!!..I use my Voodoo vibe +..bought it back in 95..brilliant pedal esp with foot control in..!!...Roger Mayer who worked with Hendrix also said a good valve amp turned on flat out was part of the magic...when they get hot then various peculiar sounds are available..which can't be had from a transistor type amp..!!!..Trouble is nowadays very few venues want or allow those volumes..!!!..Been told to cool the volume myself a few times at venues..!!!.. The Voodoo Vibe + is expensive but worth every penny for sounds and control ability...built like a tank..the low end throb at slow speed on Chorus is a revelation...!!!!!
Nice! I didn't know about that pedal until recently. You definitely have some gold in your hands with that pedal. 😛
use a power soak
Really nice demo, and very nice playing too! You have managed to get a very authentic Hendrix sound with this set up. You can't really go wrong with vintage single coil pickups, they have so much personality when compared to their rather sterile noiseless modern cousins. When combined with the proper old analog pedals, and played through a nice valve amp, they always create a very warm organic sound that is unmistakeable, and which has those beautiful harmonic overtones that are so pleasing to the ear. Imho that is where the magic lies, and why digital effects cannot reproduce those tones. Anyway, enough rambling. Brilliant demo, and very enjoyable playing.
Thanks a lot! I appreciate the kind words. Yeah, for Hendrix, you need the noisy pickups. It's what he had back then. Noiseless pickups are good too, but it's all context. My Red Strat has Dimarzio Noiseless pickups for more modern sensibilities, but my white hendrix strat has the noisy pickups.
Wonderful tones there, great fan of that Funky Vibe!
Absolutely glorious
It’s amazing. I have fuzz, Octavia, univibe and wah and I could put in in 3 different signal chains and like it!
Nice, that's really cool!
He changed the world with these simple tools..No Midi,no Pro tools, no auto tune, No Apple Mac's, Tuner apps..yada yada yada.. in just 4 years of a recording career he destroyed and recreated the world...Peace to the Avatar of the All ..James Marshall Hendrix
Magnificent sound
Wow! Thanks so much for sharing! ❤ 😎
That was great. Made my morning. Really sounds like the man. Lotta luv man. Glad u played the beauty too. Some just play the agro part. Thanks
Thanks! I'm glad you liked it 🙏🏻
Great message at the end, and fantastic video and playing
Thank you! I really appreciate that and I'm happy you enjoyed the video 🙏🏻
Sounds very very nice!
Liked and subscribed. Love the throbby uni-vibe sound
Thanks for the support. Yeah, me too! It's my favorite Uni-Vibe. I've been through a bunch and this Uni-Vibe is the real deal.
Wow! Genial congratulaciones!!!
Awesome! Thanks for sharing man
Thanks! I'm glad you enjoyed the video. 🤘🏻
So,good , had to sub , cheers from New Zealand
Thanks for the sub! I'm glad you liked the video 🙏🏻
Looks and sounds fantastic, really great playing too !
Thanks! I really appreciate that 🙏🏻
Thanks! I really appreciate that 🙏🏻
It's a kinda crazy to think that Jimi was only starting with his art. Unfortunately we can't even imagine what he would make along the 70's with others pedals... thank God we had the great SRV
What a fantastic video have you enjoyed playing guitar have a wonderful day ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤😊😊😊😅😅😊😊😊
Thank you! I'm glad you enjoyed the video 😁
Beautiful sounds my dude!
Appreciate it!
You nailed it man!
Thanks man!
Hey, loving the video mate!!! Sounding huge
Those tones are sweet!
Thanks! I'm glad you like them 🤘🏻
wish i had one! great rig
Thanks! Eventually, I plan on getting the PRS HDRX 20 Head with matching Cab.
🤘😈🤘 that was great 🔥🔥🔥
Earned a subscribe. Excellent video.
Epic playing man
Thanks man! I'm glad you liked it 🙏🏻
❤nice rig
Awesome sounds!
Thanks! I'm glad you enjoyed the video 🤘🏻
I was reading Rudolf Herfurtner's book "Brennende Gitarre" three times , but when he talks about Hendrix and his effects he was only able to mention flanger, phaser, fuzz and the famous wah wah pedal, but with only this informations it was hard for me to create any Hendrix sound. In the end I play a crunchy blues sound out of a Marshall amp without any effects by using a Power Strat-like HSH guitar working on a Paul Kossoff alike vibrato :-)
That's cool. I know Hendrix used Panning, Phaser or/and Flanger sounds in the Studio, but not live. I'm not sure the technology existed to pull off those sounds live. Either way, Hendrix's live performances were still incredible. All he needed was his guitar a Wah, Fuzz, Uni-Vibe, and Marshall Stack
it sounds like that guitar player from the 60's 🤠
I'm sure you can hear the influence he has on my playing 😏
Very wicked!❤❤❤
Nice setup!!
Good tone!
Thank you! 🙏🏻
Nailed it 🤘
the most reliable "Hendrix" board
my dream pedalboard, im waiting for my vox v847 wah to arrive, hopefully someday I can complete my pedalboard similar to this but with a JHF1 fuzz face, idk if I wanna spend that much for a funky vibe though, kind of looking at the voodoo labs micro vibe
Wwwwwwhat a hhhhhelllll of a sound!!!! That marvellous!!!!😎😎😎😎😎😎🤟🤟🤟🤟🤟🤟
Thanks! I'm glad you liked it 🤘🏻
Now you need 3 full Marshall stacks. $34,000. Then become a black man. Add 10,000 hours of small club gigs. Then be Jimi Hendrix. There you have it.
🤣
you are really good
WOW!!!!!
Good video, I’ll sub
Also...forgot to mention, that uni-vibe you have sounds unreal...best sounding vibe I've heard. Do you listen to Robin Trower too? He's another prolific uni-vibe user and great player of course.
Yeah, this is definitely my favorite Uni-Vibe! Yeah, Robin Trower is great, but whenever I hear him with Uni-Vibe, I can't help but hear Jimi. I guess it's because Jimi was the first person I heard play with Uni-Vibe and I mostly associate the effect with him.
For sure, I can dig that@@dude_crush_
Need the echo plex get that nasty delay that’s on the verse of purple haze
I've got that "covered" with a pedalboard update that's in the works. Go to my channel and scroll to the Community section. I made a post about this regarding what you're talking about.
It would be cool to make a hendrix board one day.
I've been wanting to do this for years! The Uni-Vibe was the biggest investment. But yeah, 4 pedals and you're good to go.
Could you do a recreation of Jimi's sound using only pedals under $100, please? Not everyone has a big budget. That would be really nice.
I only do videos with pedals I already own.
❤❤❤
Sounds great!! Could you please shared your pedal chain order?
Thanks! Yeah it goes:
Guitar -> Wah -> Octavio -> Fuzz Face -> UniVibe -> Amp Input
It's how Jimi had it during Band Of Gypsys
4 pedals is enough to sounds like Jimi, but the feeling is also important 🙇🏻♂️
Definitely!
There are some guys...Randy Hensen is the closest you'll ever see Jimi live. He even played with Noel Redding at one point.
Yeah, Randy is sick!!!!! I saw a video of him playing Machine Gun and I was totally blown away! 🤯
Robim Trower!
the pedals sound great, part of what smoothens and tightens up alot of his sounds though is not picking sooo hard all the time, dynamics my friend, he didnt pick hard constantly
Had he lived, I believe Jimi would have had a much larger pedalboard. Keep in mind that a lot of pedals weren't even invented until after he died!
A much larger board? He would have had an entire floor of his mansion brimming with pedals, and he'd only come out to play a gig!
Hey, if a 6 was a 9, I don't mind.
What’s the Hendrix tune at 10:01? Super familiar sounding but can’t put a name to it
It's a piece of music inspired by the song "Have You Ever Been (To Electric Ladyland)" off of the Electric Ladyland album.
👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍😘😘😘
This was awesome. Great playing and tones! Can’t believe that’s coming out of a 5153. What are you using for strings and picks?
Thanks! Yeah, the EL34 version. I'm currently using the Ernie Ball Hybrid pack, which is the highs of the 9s and the lows of the 10s. Picks = Dunlop TORTEX III Jazz Tip 1.0mm
Great video! Where did you get your expression panel for your funky vibe? How much did you pay for that? That's an expression pedal that is specially made for a funky vibe?
Thanks! Yes, it's made specifically for this Edition of the Funky Vibe. I ordered it Directly from @Sabbadius . If you're interested in one, send Nico a message on Instagram, he'd be more than happy to help you out. The Expression pedal is specific to the Funky Vibe version you have, so you'll need to let him know which one it's for. He can also make one for an Original Uni-Vibe.
Great pedalboard and nice playing man. Quick question, are you often using the Sabbadius pedal to control the speed of the univibe? I am hesitating because it is a pricey pedal for what it is. Do you think it is possible to plug another expression pedal? I am thinking buying the Fillmore east edition ;)
Thanks! I don't use the Expression often, but it is nice to have for when I do want to change the speed on the fly. I'm not sure on hooking up another Expression because there are different Expression pedals that Sabbadius makes for the different Funky Vibes there are. I know that the Woodstock Expression will also work with the Maui and 1968 Funky Vibe. It has something to do with the potentiometer inside which is 250K. The Expression for the 1969 Funky Vibe uses a 100k pot.
@@dude_crush_ thanks
It’s like the SRV version of a Hendrix board. A little cleaner. Try and find these pieces vintage for the real effect. Also a 100 watt Marshall wouldn’t hurt. But this is ear and eye candy for sure.
Thanks! Eventually, I plan on getting the PRS HDRX 20 amp with matching cab.
Sounds great! Where did you get the Funky Vibe foot-control?
Thanks! I ordered it directly from Sabbadius via Instagram. Send Nico a message on Instagram and let him know which funky vibe you plan on using the foot controller with. This one works with the Woodstock, Maui, and 68 editions.
@@dude_crush_ Thanks! I ordered one! I got the Mastermind Funky Vibe. His Vibes are the best.
What is the song when you clicked on the Univibe?
Izabella, "live at Woodstock "
Have you tried a Flying V through your rig ala Rainbow Bridge?
No I haven't. One day though for sure and a White Triple Humbucker SG Les Paul Custom 😁
Nice tone! Where did you buy the univibe expression pedal?
Thank you! I bought it straight from the source. Go on Instagram @Sabbadius and message Nico 😉
Ill let you know, its not cheap lol $$$$ I already went straight over and had a sus lol
Hey man, nice tone! What are your channel settings? I have the 100w head and I’m trying to get that tone.
Thanks! Resonance is at 9 o'clock, Presence around Noon, Clean Channel: Gain 9 or 10, Low 9 o'clock, Mid 4.5, High 5-6.
How do you avoid the wha problem?
Does the Octavia do it? Is there an impedance change, in the wha?
I know my Dunlop Silicon Fuzz Faces, will sometimes be fine, but the squeels come eventually, if I don’t put something between them, or put the Fuzz before wha.
So this Wah has a Buffer built-in. To avoid the wha problem you want a buffer between the Fuzz Face and Wah. The problem with this is a Fuzz Face does not like a buffered signal hitting the front end so you need a buffer to come on only when the wah is engaged which is the case with this Wah. It's the VOX V847A Wah. The Fulltone Clyde Deluxe Wah has a buffer switch that will solve this issue as well.
@@dude_crush_
Yeah, I have the Clyde Deluxe. It’s a great wah, for certain pedals. Some it doesn’t play along as well with, or I have to tweak the parameters.
It depends on the Fuzz Face, and the Wah settings, how well it works.
I’ve been looking for a different one, that can do the same thing, as I really like wah first in my chain.
Thanks. I totally need to try the V847A.
It’s the input buffer, they have built in, right?
You didn’t have it modded?
Just curious; how do you deal with RFI? I have a Funky Vibe Maui and I’m always picking some stray signal with it on.
It doesn't bother me. Honestly, I only have the Uni-Vibe effect On when I play. Otherwise, I just press the Cancel switch and leave the Preamp On.
I use a crybaby, Danelectro chicken salad vibe, and a tube screamer. That chicken salad is not bad if you're on a "jammin at home" budget. I still need to get me an octave pedal. Those sounds are so gnarly.
Its sound really realistic wben you play a national anthem
Thanks! That's because of the Sabbadius Funky Vibe Woodstock. I also have the 69 Edition, but the Woodstock definitely nails the Hendrix at Woodstock sound.
What gear you use to record sound ?
Warum musst du so einen Sound haben wie Hendrix???
It's probably because he's been one of my biggest influences growing up playing the electric guitar. His sound is so mesmerizing. I still get blown away with his performance on the Band of Gypsys Album. The solo on Machine Gun never gets old. That night he was channeling something divine. His performances are spontaneous and unique, which is what made his sound so mesmerizing.
Why 2 Wha pedals ?
The pedal to the right is the Expression Controller for the Funky Vibe
Man, I have to ask, are you running an attenuator?
No I am not, but the amp I'm using technically has one built-in. I'm using the Clean Channel on the EVH 5150 III EL34 50w 2x12 Combo which has a Power Level knob, which lets you adjust the wattage. Here it's at 7.5watts. Eventually, I plan on getting a PRS HDRX 20 along with a Tone King Ironman II 100-watt Reactive Power Attenuator.
Hey man, what are your channel settings? Sounds great. Trying to get that sound too.
The Fuzz Face should be first after guitar to work and sound properly.
🙃
That pedal-board will last 2 life-times, simple settups are the way forward for electric Guitar players, more playing time less tweeking time= music.
Yes!!!! With this board, I've found myself focusing more on playing for sure.
