  • Clearwater Marine Aquarium Research Institute participated in the manatee release of Reckless and Churro last week! This mom-calf pair were rescued in May 2022 after Reckless was involved in a near fatal boat strike. Reckless and Churro were rehabilitated at SeaWorld Orlando. After many months of rehabilitation, they were ready for release! CMARI fitted the manatees with satellite trackers for post-release monitoring. Our team of scientists will use the satellite data and routine observations to assess their health and ability to find food and warm water in order to survive through winter.
Thanks to our manatee tracking sponsor Well/Beings!
Many thanks to all organizations involved in this incredible release! Manatee Rescue & Rehabilitation Partnership, FWC Florida Fish and Wildlife, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, SeaWorld Orlando, Brevard Zoo, Zoo Miami, Save the Manatee Club, and South Florida Wildlife Center, Broward County Natural Resources, Sheriff's Office and Fire Department.

What are those orange lines? And is it possible to wear off the tag if the manatee starts to feel very uncomfortably? Thank you cma about your dedication! 💙

Their scars and their pattern are great for ID. I believe the marker used to highlight the scars is called a grease marker.
