When Rammstein comes to town, everyone is immediately fluent in German

    Hello from Germany!
Many people have problems to translate and understand the lyrics from Rammstein. The reason is, that the lyrics in their songs are a kind of art and poetry. So you can´t only translate the words. Art should provoke and everyone can interpret art himselfs. So the meaning of the song could be diffrent for everyone who hears it.
For example in Germany could "Du hast mich gefragt (You have asked me)" be interpreted like the short phrase of "Du hast mich gefragt ob ich Dich heiraten will (You have asked me if i want to marry you)". The reaction of this question is "...und ich hab nichts gesagt (...and i say nothing)".
The follow question traditional is asked by a priest at the marriage altar in Germany "Willst Du bis der Tot Euch scheidet treu Ihr sein für alle tage (Do you want to be faithful to her for all days long until that the death separates you)" The answer of this question in the Song is "Nein (No)!" Maybe you understand at the second refrain "Du hasst mich (You hate me)" and no more "Du hast mich (You have me)". Both expressions sounds the same in Germany!
There are only a few words in the Song "Du Hast", but there are many ways to understand them.
Sorry for my poorly english, but i hope you understand what I mean...

It is "you…you have…(asked me)" not "you hate me" The "hate" is the double meaning because it sounds the same in german language. The meaning reveals later with "…mich gefragt" ( asked me ). It is an obvious and clever trick in german grammar. I love you guys for dealing with it. Cheers from Germany.

Your "Expert" in chat is wrong about the translation.
Du hasst = You hate. Du hast = You have.
It's a piece of intentional wordplay, you don't know if he's saying "Have" or "Hate" until the following line.
The lyrics are essentially wedding vows being turned down.
This was a successful song commercially but not their best, not by a mile, it's very simple and accessible. You'll end up doing plenty more Rammstein as time goes on so I won't bother making any specific requests, I do suggest you pull up translated lyrics after watching the performances though, they combine poetry with some... Interesting subject matter.
Their live shows are crazy good, I saw them live in 2005 and almost melted in the heat of the pyro.

Lyrical breakdown: Some folks confuse the original German version "Du Hast" (You Have) with the English version "You Hate". Not the same song. The second would be spelled Du Hasst, (Haßt). The original German version lyrically could be interpreted as a 3 part conversation between a bride, groom, and priest at altar. "You have me. You have asked me and I said nothing." Priest: (loosley translated) Will you love her even in the bad days and the death of her "sheath" ("tod euch scheide" aka menopause). Bride: (inner thought of happiness) Jaaaa! (Yes!) Groom: NEIN! (NO!) Then he leaves her. Their whole music catalog is incredibly weird when you take the time to translate and put their lyrics into context. FWIW, Rammstein name themselves after the air base in Germany (Ramstein rhymes with 'mine') where there was an air show accident in 1988 that killed 70 people and injured 500 more. They have a self-titled track that tells that story. I am retired Air Force and was stationed there for 7 years. 🤘🤘💥💥💥 "Heirate Mich" (trans. Marry Me) is my fav track by them. I recommend you check it out. It's kind of a creepy German version of Poe's 'Annabel Lee"

I always heard it as "bis der Tod euch scheidet" - until death parts you. Nothing to do with female genitalia, just a traditional formulation of marriage vows. But if he does use "scheide", it could be the conjunctive, another play on words after hast/hasst. Rammstein are clever enough to do that.

Hete’ what “Du hast” is all about according to Wikipedia:
The title Du hast is a play on words with the second person singular of haben and hassen. The content is about a marriage proposal that the lyrical I is initially undecided about accepting, but ultimately decides against, which becomes clear in the refrain:
"Will you till death do you part
Be faithful to her for all your days?
      (Yes), No!
Will you till death do you part
Love her even in evil days?
      (Yes), No!"

@Gavin Lisle please, if native speakers explain to you part of their language, maybe trust their opinion. The wordplay is so obvious that little children (german ones of course) grasp this concept intuitively.
If you are interested there is a video of little german kids reacting to rammstein and giving their thoughts and opinions (it's a pretty cute video and has subtitles).
The play works because of how the text only gradually expands its meaning(s).

Rammstein has members that are professionally certified in the use of pyrotechnics, so they can get away with fire and explosion effects in their shows that other bands wouldn't attempt for safety reasons. in fact "du hast" is kind of a word game in german.
"du hast mich..." means "you have (asked) me"
and "du hasst mich" means "you hate me"
the thing is that both sounds exactly the same in german. So even in german you dont know what they mean as long as you hear just the first 3 words.
But with the fourth word (gefragt /asked) the meaning is clear.

So please do not use literal or direct translation and trust me on this one as a german. It bothers me in almost every videos where they think it's "You hate". Like, if you do a little bit of work and translate the sentence as a whole you would get the right translation.
Even though I don't get why people add the second S in context if you try "du hast" no translator should result in you hate because it's just not the same word, there is missing the S. And to finish of my novel here (sorry for that) : grammar is very important in this case. in german "Du hast" is not considered a sentence and that means that the sentence itself only works and makes sense when completed. Much love from Germany share music share love my friends.

the rumor when I was in high school was that his intention was for it to be both at the same time. the song is about a bad relationship so he's playing off the german wedding vows and the phonetic similarities between hast and hasst. because it's a play of the wedding vows for the story I think it would have to be written as hast from an artistic stand point. he might be singing "you have" in the german version but my guess would be he's intending for it to be taken both ways for the majority of the song. also, are the sounds distinct enough to be able to tell which word it is without sentence structure for context??

"hast" is not "hate" it's a German modal verb like 'have'.
The lyrics are: "You. You have. You have asked. You have asked me a question. And I had said nothing."
But it does does sound like "hasst" - a form of the verb hassen which does mean hate. So at first you think it says "You. You hate. You hate me" but then the last couple of words reveal that it was "have" and not "hate".
And then the chorus is the actual question which is the ceremonial question the priest asks at a wedding sorta like "Do you want, until death, which would separate, to love her, even in bad days" And then a resounding answer: Nein! (No!).
