Awesome demo, Takahashi!! I’ve got the iOS app and its amazing, and about to grab the XILS 4 to compare and use on MAC. Class of its own. This and PolyKBiii are untouchable.
If you happen to own one of these rare-as-hen's-teeth, hand-built synths from 1970 that cost as much as a luxury car, then this tutorial is for you! so helpful! What's next are you going to teach us how to clean our faberge egg collection and wax our ferraris too?
You've forgotten the italian musician Franco Battiato the second One Who bought It After Pink Floyd. Listen to his albums Fetus, Pollution in the early 70s.
me too. I was picturing myself finding them on ebay, ordering them, opening the package and feeling relieved when I filled up the spots. And how happy it would make me going do to my studio every day and knowing that they are filled and perfect. All of this in the 5 seconds they showed it in this video. Yup, that's OCD my friends. :)
a synth god hell bent on bringing the prices of gear out of the stratosphere. I get terrified every time him or 8 bit guy does a video that it might be about a piece I have been hunting. lol
Dumb question: what's that called at the very end at 4:30 when he is holding down a root note, and then when he triggers another key the pitch jumps to that key, then when the second key is released the pitch jumps back to the key still being held?
It has 'high note priority'... only notes higher than the key held down will sound... if he still held the same note with left hand and played a lower note, it wouldn't sound until he let go of that higher note... 'low note priority' is the other way round.
Yeah. Way to complicated. He really complicated good and I congratulate him on his complicating skill. Someday I hope to complicated the way he complicated. Again, way to complicated. kudos.
You sunk my battleship!
Looks like a one player game - “I sunk my battleship”. Funny comment, made me laugh.
This matrix is so much better than the mess of cables of other modular synths.
I bought one in early 70s but without keyboard so it was used as a sound effects machine only. Sold it cheap and regretting it to this day!

You can tell the cinematographer was a synth freak because they pulled focus on the synths behind him, not on him.
He probably focused for the background and then didn't realize he wasn't in focus until after he put everything away.
All of the score for Doctor Who -The Sea Devils was made on the VCS3 by Malcolm Clark
and On The Run...
"First patch" tutorial for EMS ? ...
It may be strange, but I always thought that people who can buy VCS3 have all the knowledge about this synth ...
Jesus people, it's education...
I’ve never liked the VCS3 but after watching this I realize it does sound really good.
It reminds me of playing battleships, what a cool idea!
and radiophonic workshop and jarre
What would '70s Doctor Who have sounded like without this...?!!!
Very nicely demonstrated. Thank you.

Behringer have a VCS3 clone currently being beta tested and should be available next year, so there's that.
Lovelly and so complex machine !!
Thanks, love these!

Those missing pins is playing havoc with my OCD.

Tell you what, I got mine iPad version and it rocks like a SUPERNOVA.
Me too.
I have the ios for this and just as good in my eyes and half the money
What happens if you put pins in all of the holes at the same time?
All of your oscillators and effects would be routed to all of your channels.
Yes it would sound fuckin horrible.
why didn't i buy this effin thing in the 90s when I had a chance... ::face palm!:: I need a modular synth with a built in time machine... balls
You mean like when Daniel Miller gave UEA (in my home city) a nominal 300 pounds for their Synthi 100 ???
Access Virus will do this

MyManDan it's monophonic ( it can only play one note at a time )
It has 'high note priority'... only notes higher than the key held down will sound... if he still held the same note with left hand and played a lower note, it wouldn't sound until he let go of that higher note... 'low note priority' is the other way round.
ending bit is One foot out the door? Van Halen?
Voltage controlled studio version 3 is what VCS3 stands for
Takashi has the voice of Johnny Depp...and a bit of his hair and his body look too....
Who is the host?
Tatsuya Takahashi
タツ兄の顔にピントがあってねえ〜
マトリックスってこう使うんですね。勉強になります。
Why are they patching it to play as a standard subtractive monosynth?
My thought exactly. It can sound amazing and musical as a sound effect generator.
Because it's called first patch...
woah
more
I wish I had ...never mind
VCS ... music academy 》 red bull? What the....
First spend 12k on an ems synthi , then , have no time to play it from subsequent debt (or diy one ;) )
why does he keep calling at ems when its a Putney?
It's nickname is Putney.
Way to complicated!!!

nah. you'd get the hand of it. it's a very smart and effective interface for the time. still used in many ways today.
this man needs to get taken back for repair. He made this synth sound like a fart
