I thank SNL for bringing back memories of our Sabado Gigante, which was not only a great television program, but was also very important as a meeting point for the family and our Hispanic community. Thanks to the public, we closed our story almost 10 years ago, but we still feel the affection and respect for what we were able to build together.

Fun fact! When I took Spanish in high school, our assignment was to choose a TV show from either Telemundo or Univision and write a paragraph summarizing the show. I chose Sabado Gigante not knowing anything about it. I watched the entire three hours and had absolutely no idea how to summarize such a zany, fun, and mesmerizing show. I can't say I watched every week after that, but I absolutely tuned in a couple more times that school year despite not having completed my homework assignment. And now, 25 years later, that assignment has paid dividends. Gracias a ud. y su equipo for this show!

I was a American (Gringo) selected to be on the show 20 years ago when I was married to my first wife who is a Latina. We lived in Miami, and she was a part time model for Univision for soap operas. The casting is not random, they vetted us for the show as a couple. We won, and took the cash option instead of the prize which was a trip as I recall.
A few interesting behind the scenes info, Don Fransisco speaks very good English and helped me on the show between takes explaining all the chaos. Also if you dont sing well the Chacal Ghost man will play the trumpet and the Lion will drag you away and your eliminated. The women spokesmodels were half naked and all 10s. Most of the audience is elderly Spanish assisted living home residents and latin tourists. It was fun...but one crazy cultural difference.

I had completely forgotten about the lion, but seeing it here immediately gave me flashbacks to being a kid watching this late at night with my mom: little me falling asleep to all the noise, the glamor, and that lion dragging contestants into a cave curtained off by a shiny sheet of silver tinsel streamers. This is one of the best things that I would never have imagined would have made it on SNL. Sábado Gigante was such a special show that I would watch every Saturday night growing up with my family and it broke my heart when it ended. But to see it being parodied and paid homage to on SNL is so special to see. Some people may just think it’s a zany over the top sketch but to me and many other people it was a weekly 3 hr show that meant so much to watch. It really is incredible to see.

I'll never forget the beginning of season 48 when the cold open implied that hiring Michael Longfellow, Marcello Hernandez, Molly Kearney, and Devon Walker was the worst thing SNL ever did because it came on the heels of Kate McKinnon, Aidy Bryant, Melissa Villaseñor, Alex Moffatt, Chris Redd, Pete Davidson, Aristotle Athari, and (later) Cecily Strong either getting fired or quitting the show. Yeah, Molly Kearney didn't work out (though I think it's because SNL could have gotten a funnier non-binary person, but, hey, Molly walked so someone else out there who uses they/them as their pronouns and is funny enough for SNL can run, just like how Denny Dillon, Terry Sweeney, and Danitra Vance [they were the first Ls and G on the LGBTQ spectrum who were on SNL in the 1980s, when people didn't care about LGBTQ people and thought SNL would die without the original cast from the 1970s] walked so Bowen Yang, Kate McKinnon, and Punkie Johnson can run), but everyone else proved themselves worthy, though I thought Devon Walker would fail and Molly wouldn't, since SNL did need to fill the hole left by Aidy and Kate, but I guess I was wrong about that.
