Concept and Creative Direction - Geoff and Kathy Castellucci. Geoff and Kathy went over the top with this one. Zero is correct. Most of this set came from Geoff and Kathys' home decor and yard. Arranged, Produced, Performed, Directed, and Edited by Geoff Castellucci. Rick Underwood did fantastic make-up as always.
Geoff wanted to leave a hopeful feel for Jack, knowing that he would discover Christmas. But, he didn't want to change the end of the song. So, after his signature logo, two gramaphones appeared, he added another scene. Jack is still at the piano and it starts to snow; he looks up and reaches out to touch the miracle of snow. Geoff also added a brief portion of his behind the scenes video, I hope you had the opportunity to watch it. Great reaction, hope you are going to react to Voiceplay's Hellfire from Disney's Hunchback of Notre Dame.
Geoff does it everything but the final mixing. His wife Kathy helps him a lot. She made Zero & made somany other things for Geoff in his videos. She always lends a hand to Voice Play as well. She is amazing. Thank you for another great reaction to Geoff.
So much attention to detail on this. The way he moves from high to low emotionally is seamless and even down to tapping his leg to call zero. Everything is flawless. Nice reaction
And this is why I try to watch all the reactors with musical training: I have watched this countless times and never caught that the bass keys weren’t sounding. And I’ve heard people theorizing about that sound thinking it was the pedals. I love this song. I was not going to watch the movie and then I heard the song and caved and I’m so glad I did. But I am thrilled that Geoff decided to put his signature spin on this classic. Not only did we get to hear those fantastic vocals but his acting was absolutely incredible. Jack has always tugged at my heart strings a little because he was so successful at what he did but he wanted to try new things and felt he couldn’t . And Geoff captured all those same feelings so well. I find it interesting that VoicePlay’s release this month, he plays another conflicted character. He is playing Frollo from the Hunchback of Notre Dame- a man who believes himself to be pious but instead is truly evil. I don’t know if it’s coincidence or not but in this, there’s a section where Geoff’s eyes glow with pumpkins in the irises, and in Hellfire it’s flames
Thank you for your insight! I watch musically-trained reactors hoping they'll point out stuff I missed or did not recognize, and you did not disappoint. Geoff shared in a recent interview with Tara Simon Studios that originally VoicePlay only made videos as promos for their live performances. It was Layne who believed that videos would be useful in and of themselves in the future, so they continued to learn audio and video editing. Phantom of the Opera in 2015 was their first big theatrical video, and they've been getting better at them ever since. Yes, Geoff goes all out. Took him two days to get all the black makeup off. Rick Underwood did the makeup, and Geoff and Kathy got some help with the heavy lifting on set (literally -- the grand piano took four men to set up) but otherwise pretty much do everything themselves. He did bring in a cameraman and focus puller for this one, but often it's just Kathy running the cameras. Ed Boyer does the final audio mix, as he does for many a capella groups like VoicePlay and Home Free, but Geoff did the film editing. For Geoff and VP videos, let them roll until the Patreon list shows, as there are often little nuggets or extra scenes. Also recommend headphones (the "bon jour" was only in the left channel) and captions on. Since Kathy has significant hearing loss, Geoff often puts in funny things to read.
Yes he does the editing too. You can see who does what in the credits under the title. His talents seem endless. He also creates all the music, on his keyboard with the use of plugins and samples.
I love how after he picked up the pumpkin, when he stood up, he looked like he played the top of the piano then delicately walked his fingers along the piano as he walked around it.
Geoff is the best Jack ever! 🤯 As it reads in the credits: "Arranged, Produced, Performed, Directed and Edited by Geoff Castellucci", with his wife Kathy as Production Manager and Ed Boyer as Sound Engineer. I hope you'll react to VoicePlay's Hellfire soon, from Hunchback of Notre Dame. And yes, Geoff is also the best Frollo 🔥
the nice thing about Halloween songs they are well suited to deep bass voices, so the song feels natural, not just a showcase for a voice. Plus, the song is actually interesting. Well done. I like it.
hmm wasnt the sound you hear while he is playing on the piano the pedals that almost sand like sound ? that was one thing where you could tell if it is a midi piano or a real one at least thats what i was told years ago :D
Before he began writing for movies, he was the lead in the band Oingo Boingo. You might be surprised which of their songs you might already have heard from the ‘80s. Great fun dance music
@@ekramer2478 You GOT one of them! That was most definitely the best dance song of the time! I saw them first in this small club in DC called the 9:30 Club (long before Elfman began writing for movies). What a BLAST!
@@hwyla4416 OH yes. Somewhere I have the entire album on tape! Loved them. One of the best nights of my life. Was in Ybor City, Florida. Great concert!
Geoff is definitely amazing! He even gets me liking/loving songs I never have before. 😂 I hope you do a reaction video for Geoff's Man of Constant Sorrow soon. (Don't for get the first part of him talking after the song. Before he starts listing those he is thanking. I'd love to see your reaction to what he says about trains.) 😊
Truly a masterpiece. I concur, don't turn a lament into a diddy or vice versa. Stay true to the emotions of the lyrics. For more great costumes you should check out what Lindsey Stirling dod for her video "Snow Waltz".
They need to make a live action version of The Nightmare Before Christmas, with Geoff playing the part of Jack. They need to use this version of the song, and also the various versions of songs from the movie that Voice Play has done. Mayube get one of the Bass Gang or Eric Holloway to play Oogie Boogie.
2:06 in all honesty I have no idea what you're talking about there. Are you trying to say that there is a mismatch between the visual and the audio? If so, I disagree. I played accordeon for the majority of my childhood and adolescence which is basically a small piano (except it's technically a wind instrument and the piano is a string instrument but both have the same input keys). To me what he is playing there looks like the exact representation of the audio you hear. Left hand doesn't necessarily mean bass if you're playing that far to the right of the piano. And there are most certainly 2 lines of melody and harmony utilising 2 hands, one going high (bada dada bada dada) and the other SLIGHTLY below that (daaa daaa daaa daaa). As far as I can tell its an exact match. What I find fun tho is that there is in fact a mismatch later on between audio and visual when he takes his hands off the keys and the piano continues... BUT used so perfectly theatrical - note they don't show the keys but show that he raises his hands, implying the piano continues on with telepathy or smth which is SO COOL especially because when he gets his hands back on the keys it's and exact match again (you can see it in his shoulders, his body movement and everything, he is ACTUALLY playing the matching parts when his hands are on the keys). I LOVE how much detail went into that and it really doesn't get enough credit in reactions imo. He is neither just plinking random keys nor is he playing the entire piece but instead using his skills in actually playing to make it a theatrical masterpiece. Having played the instrument and therefore knowing what keystrokes make what sound I REALLY appreciate that because I can fully enjoy it without getting that disappointing uncanny valley effect of "wait that doesn't match the music at all"
Since you're such a fan of The Nightmare Before Christmas, you really should react to the Pentatonix cover of Making Christmas. It's a short song, but such a fun video and great arrangement.
Danny's voice acting isn't very good, neither are any other voice actors covering this song. Geoff is a master when it comes to emotional voice acting. He has a way of reaching deep down into your soul.
Masterpiece🤩👏i knew Goeff only this week, i'am alrecy in love whit Him...

The snow also felt to me like a bit of a nod to another Burton film - reminds me of Edward Scissorhands
Exactly, and as he reaches out to touch the snow, he gives just a glimpse of the softest, sweetest smile. It touches me so deeply I can't help crying.
It wasn't Christmas that Jack needed - it was Sally.

It is more a pedal sound than not. There's no bass keys sounding, because none are being played. It's entirely above a C4.
Thank you for your insight! I watch musically-trained reactors hoping they'll point out stuff I missed or did not recognize, and you did not disappoint.

Chris Sarandon was the speaking voice actor in the movie. Yes, Prince Humperdink himself.
Hm, I heard notes when he depressed the keys on the left. Yes, the doggie's name is Zero! I'm sad that you missed the lovely touch at the end.
I want to see cover geoffs wicked games

make sure you watch the credits he always puts some "extras" in
And he adds content during the credits, whic we missed seeing here. Anyone who hasn't watched the full video should go and stay for the entire time.

I knew you'd love this. Especially after watching your reaction to Boogie Oogie Man. Keep the vids coming my brother from just across the border.
You should also check out Sally’s song cover by Lyric Noel :)
Danny Elfman is a powerhouse composer. I never knew that he sang those parts. Thanks, DJ! Amazing work!

"I love this song to Death"
"Inflictions.. inflections"
"Geoff is Killing it"

Geoff said this is his favorite song from Nightmare before Christmas
About the sign on your shelf...
Yes, they were, and don't call me Shirley! /jk
Just fyi ww hear a ton of audio popping whenever you have the vid playing, sounds like popcorn 🎉
Just caught that. Thanks for the heads up!

Would be great to see you react to the new Dimash performance of Durdarai where he turns a traditional Kazakh folk song into a jazz number!
