What I like is that Judy's biases were not super overt. She was not someone shouting "Yo, I'm racist" from the rooftops. She wasn't even someone who would say "I'm not racist...but...", the way her parents were. She thought of herself as someone progressive, someone open minded, yet she was blind to her own bias.

    • @hastiborhani3492

Yeah,it's interesting because most of her bias were because of trauma and lack of thinking

i really love that character flaw because it’s extremely realistic. there’s so many people out there who believe they’re progressive but as soon as it slightly affects their life or have any presence in it they suddenly start having second thoughts. i love her character development in the movie.

I think we need to see more of that in film. Society doesn't realize that prejudice isn't always an explicit thing, and not everyone who has it is necessarily a bad person. Everyone has bias in some regard whether or not we acknowledge it. I think Judy's case was one of ignorance, rather than malice. I'm just upset that it took a Disney cartoon to explain to people that there's nuance to these things more often than not. I think Zootopia's message was about how perspective can be a real eye opener, and that people are brought together by sympathizing with each other's struggles, which is the first step to change.

You hit the nail right in the head by stating how non-musicals are always left in the background in comparison to the big musicals with high replay value. Not only that, but Zootopia didn't get all that much promotion outside of its original 3 year cycle post release the way movies like Moana or Frozen do because well, it's a "difficult" franchise to push in comparison to the princess . Toy Story or Frozen lines. At any rate, I think I'd rather have small circles talking about Zootopia than to have it be downplayed for being "overrated" and "oversaturated" which always happens to the musicals (Frozen, Tangled, Moana, Encanto, etc.). Sadly, because of the entire cop situation in the US, I highly doubt we will be getting Zootopia 2 anytime soon despite it having been in development for several years now.

Frozen is the best movie period but not because of Elsa, because of Princess Anna of Arendelle, the number one character in all of anything, who Disney disrespected in the so-called sequel and basically marred the franchise going forward. Definitely worst theater moment when Anna literally does something the character would never do, and which the movie you're currently watching itself expressed this. All they had to do was bring in another character, this so-called Samantha, to fill that role, she could've been Elsa's new best friend that Anna was worried she was losing her sister to, and then Samantha saves the day, Elsa is restored, and Elsa and Anna decide to live together in the woods, would've been a nice ending, instead they chose to SEPARATE them and basically be as evil as Disney ever could be, not even understanding why Frozen is popular int he first place.
And that Oalf's Frozen Adventure that Frozen haters complained about being in front of Coco? That was written by someroen who isn't Jennfier Lee, who actually UNDERSTANDSA why Frozen is such an amaazing movie. WDAS has somewhat redeemed themselves with Raya and the Last Dragon and Encanto, but the fact that the same studio made the best movie ever and the worst sequel ever for the same franchise is wild.

Disney has lately been rather indirectly insulting to the intelligence of movie-goers by thinking that having an oh-so sweet and adorable character do an Uno reverse in the last five minutes with no buildup or context is somehow good writing. It's especially obvious when they keep having the secretly character randomly appear and given a tiny bit of focus but ultimately do nothing, making it clear they're being saved up to be the surprise plot-twist big bad evil person.

I wouldn't say Zootopia isn't talked about, but rather overlooked due to the overwhelming popularity of other Disney movies like you mentioned. To this day, there's still an active fanbase writing Zootopia fanfiction and drawing artwork, but I think the enthusiasm might be starting to fade slightly because of how little new content is being made. It's hard to keep fans excited when there's nothing to look forward to other than a Disney+ spinoff series. As a result, there just isn't that much to talk about that hasn't already been said at this point, so the initial hype for the movie has died down since it came out back in 2016.

It is always in trending on Disney+, excet when they for some reason onlys howed the to trending TV shows and cut out the movies entirely around the time Black Widow came out and for like two months afteward. But when they don't do that, Zootoia is always in trending, AND furthermore, it is one of first two WDAS roeprties to receive a Disney+ show, the first being Big Hero 6. They are not going to give those to anything but top tier or second to tier stuff for awhile. I would say Princessa nd the Frog goes in the second tier, not from myr ankings but how I've seen it. I think the reason why it isn't talked so much is because how much it relates so much in real life. Despite being talking animals it really is the closest thing to being real life and because of that it kinda makes people uncomfortable talking about it because the problems they had in the movie is the very same problem we deal with in our every day life. To put it simply the movie hits too close to home.

I enjoy Zootopia for largely one reason - the jaguar in the opening scene of Judy's class play who proudly proclaimed "I want to be an actuary!". I had recently discovered that I wanted to study actuarial science, and seeing a character in a Disney movie talk about a pretty niche career made me feel so happy. I think Zootopia has something for everything, even if it's something small like that.

Their actions fit to what was said, and so stuff like you saying Zootopia's soundtrack can't compete to the catchy score's of other titles, while showing Judy taking her breath after a long run.
This attention to detail is so cool yet so subtle. But it makes for a really fun watch and is so much better than random scenes stitched together or just playing the same trailer footage over and over again. So chapeau! for going the extra mile here; it's much appreciated :)

I have another theory regarding Zootopia. A significant portion of the profits from the film was made from Asian countries. Of course I don’t know exactly how much, but by looking up merchandise from Shanghai Disneyland or Tokyo Disney, you can see it definitely has a presence there. Heck, Shanghai is even getting their own Zootopia section of the park. In most other places, Zootopia is sidelined by Disney in favor of other films, typically the princess franchise. If you visit Disney World or Disneyland it is significantly difficult to find any merchandise or a presence of Zootopia at all. I visited in 2019 and all I found at the time was 2 trading pins. Unfortunately I don’t know when Disney is going to realize that we outside of Asia really enjoy Zootopia too!

I specifically like that you pointed out how the message of the movie doesn’t exclusively refer to racism or sexism like most reviewers at the time would be saying all over the place, but that it refers to prejudice as a whole. That prejudice could come from anyone, anywhere, and for any reason and it’ll effect people or whole societies if you let them run amok. You could sort of compare it to Pride and Prejudice in that regard.

Thank you for addressing this problem. It shocks me how successful this film is, but Disney doesn’t bother to treat it like the other Walt Disney Animation Studios films that came before and after. Sure things like Moana or Frozen get more attention because of how easily marketable they are cuz OOH Disney Princess movies, but when you look at stuff like Wreck it Ralph or Big Hero 6. Those aren’t your typical Disney Princess musical movies, yet some how even those have gotten more than Zootopia. They still get more merch to this day than Zootopia, Ralph got a sequel (which was wasted potential and was trash), and Big Hero 6 got a full series. I want Zootopia+ to be the hope and change that Disney will give some love to this franchise again, but with how little it’s being teased or advertised, I’m not even sure anymore.
Zootopia’s success and even more so the ongoing issues out in the world that fits Zootopia’s subject matter really well, I think they totally warrant a sequel. There’s so much potential to make the second movie more exciting, fun, emotional, and hard hitting than the first, and I really want Disney to finally do something with it. The excuse that they don’t want it to be “too dark” is total ass when you’ve got so many older and even newer movies that can be even darker. Let Zootopia 2 push the boundaries. This is my favorite movie for many reasons and I really hope more can come from it in the future after Zootopia+…

Zootopia is and still remains as my FAVORITE disney movie of all time. Like everything you've mentioned, Zootopia has such a great story, amazing visuals, great character development, and the story is honestly really unique. It's weird, but Zootopia is hardly ever marketed like in disney stores which I find strange since they're all animals, it would be easy to make stuffed toys of the characters. Zootopia is great because is doesn't just cater to children, but it does have adult-like humor that is still enjoyable for kids. Such as Nick's tax evasion or the joke about sloths working at the DMV is something adults can relate to.
I hope that Zootopia will gain the popularity it deserves, especially since a sequel is now in the works!

But when I saw Zootopia afterwards, the messages went right over my head. As a child, I couldn't really understand subtlety, so I opposed the bad guys without really realizing that the protagonists had bad traits too. So, I think the film was written for an older audience (15+), but perhaps marketed toward a younger one (6-14).

Like, think about the montage between Jim Hawkins and Long John Silver in Treasure Planet-when the two of them go out for a ride on that sloop, it's such good character chemistry with a FIRE soundtrack, y'know? And Zootopia, while funny, didn't have much light-heartedness in it. I might be wrong-it's been a long time since I watched it, after all-but that's how it feels in my memories.

It's an incredible film. One of my favorites ever tbh.. But my theory is this, it has amazing characters, great development, an impactful and inspiring message but maybe just maybe because it was based around taking animals that's why it didn't stand out. Frozen had Olaf, a more original type of character but Idk for sure if that played a role because a film like The Lion King is still so talked about many years later. I also agree with your point about how it not being a musical impacted it's staying power. Musicals now have been selling good.. think of the Sing films so I agree with your point there too. Nonetheless, I just truly love Zootopia. It is a moving film with great animation and very important social messaging.

In a nutshell, despite his kids and bubbly aspect, this moovies is to reel.
And speaking about it is saying that this behavior exist and they do. But "people" prefer to evade themselve with music and dream than going all out against other people behavior or their own.

i just assumed it was because disney didn't see is as franchiseable or marketable so they don't even bother bringing it up themselves, especially when you compare it to their merchandising licensing juggernauts like their princesses. Which not only makes big passive revenue but the properties is also super easy to convert into attractions and parks. as well as making it relatively easy for them to turn them into live action in the future so thats some future proving.
likely why Raya got some flak from the South East Asian community as it really looked like it was a thinly veiled attempt to cash in on their culture without committing to anything, while theyre hiring almost exclusively east asian to do all the voices, songs, producing and etc.
plus the themes of the movie is kinda dark and mature.

You need to dig around and find a BluRay copy with all the background stuff in it, it will double your appreciation for the movie and how it got to be what it is.

There is a very small core of us out there that would have liked to see the original plot, but we tend to have to keep it to ourselves...

I mean, if that was the case pixar wouldn't be a thing, toy story like you mentioned isn't a musical either. Theres tons of movies out there who people talk about and remember even tho they're not musicals so idk

I think it was very hyped at the time to the point that it was over saturated.
I love Try Everything. It is repeated on my playlist all the time and I am not tired of it yet.
Right now, I am focused on catching up on Netflix before it gets cancelled next month. Also, I live with my mom and we watch what she wants to watch. Good thing we have the same taste but Zootopia does not get picked first.
And with many new things coming out and creating buzz, we get distracted by them.
Now that you mention it, maybe it does not get a lot of theory videos or buzz since it was not left ambigous and the songs don’t add more to that.
Movies like brother bear don’t get talked about a lot or Tarzen and they were astounding films. Brother Bear 2’s soundtrack was amazing and I thought it added a lot to the film, but people ignore that one entirely.
While the Disney Renaissance are popular films, they don’t have a bunch of channels or videos dedicated to them either.
It is mostly Toy Story, Encanto, Moana, etc. that has a bunch of unanswered questions or subtle themes that people like to talk about in depth.

I will also add. With stuff going to streaming now. Being an animated film where it's name starts with Z. It's gonna be the last movie to see in the line up. Which thus. Less people will watch as streaming becomes more and more popular. I noticed a while back when I was scrolling through animated films. It's last on the list. Unless your a die hard animated lover like me and others. Most people will pick something between the A through maybe the M category. Cause after that nobody wants to scroll through names.

I do like how they handled a character with more subtle bias, and showed how they actually could be a good person, just raised in a certain way and with perhaps some bad childhood experiences resulting in a bias that they are blind to. I think it's the sort of prejudice that's the more common problem with a lot of the more liberal young adult crowd these days. People who are progressive, but oblivious to unconscious bias that might exist because of their parents, neighbourhood, school, etc. More kids than ever are raised to know that racism, sexism, homophobia, and transphobia are bad things, but might be unaware that certain behaviour or opinions reveal unconscious bias that someone else would need to point out to them (and a willingness to consider that maybe they are biased without realizing it).
As an aside, I also must say that for all Zootopia handled it well, there is the point that predators, especially the apex predators and obligate carnivores, would generally have innate instincts that most prey species would lack. So that kind of muddles the message a bit. With humans we're all the same species with differences that are largely skin deep, most of the psychological differences you see are cultural or otherwise learned behaviour, excepting of course exceptional cases of people outside the standard deviation of behaviour, or cases of defect or injury which aren't the norm. Even the largest and strongest humans compared to the smallest and weakest (adult) humans have nothing on the differences of say, Zootopia's mice, and tiger people. Similarly, for all that Judy is a bit of a supercop, she had to work 10x harder than her much larger and stronger peers to achieve her dreams, and she's still not physically going to be able to do things that many of her colleagues would do without even trying. Her size and speed have advantages in their own right though. I would imagine that the society is by and large a lot more flexible with methodology as far as achieving goals go. Basically, procedures might be more flexible to account for the various species strengths and weaknesses, and a lot of allowances being made to account for those realities (you couldn't expect a hippo to investigate a building intended for much smaller species). The infrastructure of the city indicates that considerations are made, so it stands to reason that jobs are as flexible as they can reasonably be made to do so. The society itself does have its own overall unconscious biases though. The deputy mayor sheep person wasn't wrong that it seems like smaller herbivore species seem to take back seats when it comes to positions of authority and are just not taken seriously (Deputy Mayor and Judy, though some of the treatment of Judy was probably down to her being the 'newbie' and given the crap job at least partly because of that), and preconceptions about species are prevalent (as was the case with Nick).
Basically, the message it's trying to convey is a good one, and it does it well, but the world of Zootopia does have more objective reasons for some of the prejudices than its target audience (us humans on Earth). It's not necessarily fair to have those prejudices (see: Nick), but still something to perhaps consider as not translating over perfectly.
