  • Here we have a Cyrus Power Amplifier model 'Power'. One of the early stereo/mono amplifiers.
It wasn't powering up and had been to a repair house previously. We find that its been butchered and has multiple problems including a dead micro-controller(marbles).
This would normally be terminal but in this instance I decided to re-create the function of the controller using an Arduino. Some further debugging of the main board and we are back in tune!

doesn't surprise me that a service centre made that mess, name and shame. Finding reputable, honest, knowledgable service techs who know what they're doing is a real challenge. I always took my ability to solder and work on things for granted and now that I can't in the short to medium term, and the stuff is piling up, I know how the less technical people feel. Fantastic work substituting the microcontroller with the Arduino, a great way to repair an otherwise junk unit.

Fascinating stuff sir, way beyond my comprehension but nevertheless it just shows what can be achieved with your knowledge. I shall certainly give you a call when my mono x's require attention.

You never fail to amaze me with your expertise with Cyrus products. Even more so when you consider schematics are not available for most of these products and so a lot of time must go in to reverse engineering them.

Very impressive that... I have a degree in electronics but I'm not sure I'd have even thought about approaching that one, would have assumed it was a lot less logical than it turned out to be. Of course this is a British design and they did tend to keep things simple like that - the Japanese would have spun up a custom IC with 240 pins that did the job of an entire range of devices and you'd have had no chance lol.
That mess though... I consider myself very much an amateur when it comes to audio stuff but there's no way I'd have been happy to let that out the door, it looks like a curious twelve tear old was let loose on it!
