No, that is Massachusets. The whole area was known as "Massachusets Bay" until Maine and other states there were actually founded. 44:51

44:50 Back then that would have been Massachusetts, Maine didn't come to be until the back and forth State balance in Congress leading up to the American Civil War.

  • @androzani
    @androzani 3 года назад +21

Maine was Massachusetts back in that time, it only became a state because Massachusetts wanted to even out the number of slave/free states when Missouri became a state.
It makes sense to call it Maine or modern Maine for the video but contextually the video is still correct. He even references this in his Civil War Oversimplified video.

Maine was Massachusetts at the time. It wasn’t until the Missouri compromise that they officially designated that area as a separate state to balance the free and slave state numbers.

Yes! More Oversimplified - so excited to see you do more of these! I love seeing other history-lovers add their commentary, and Nate does a great job being objective.
I strongly suggest checking out Sam O'Nella for more history content, if you aren't familiar. More bizarre, niche historical events, and just a bit more risqué. Definitely up there with Oversimplified, IMHO.

I've posted this before comment before Because much of the fighting in the Seven Years War was in North America, the Members of Parliament were reminded of the existence of the colonies. Up until then most of Parliament simply gave the colonies no thought. And the colonies had been thriving due to that benign neglect. As others have stated, there was a tax issue. In general, the serious taxpayers in Britain were Members of Parliament. They had to be; they were the ones with the money. They were looking for other revenue sources, and they hit on the idea of taxing the colonists. The problem was, at this time everyone in Britain thought of wealth in terms of species; that is, gold or silver coins. But due to Parliament’s own previous policies, there was very little space in the American colonies; most transactions were a combination of barter and credit. Some colonies issued limited paper currency, which basically made the barter-and-credit economy a bit more convenient. To make matters worse, the colonial governments had gone into debt during the war, and they were already collecting local taxes (in specie) to repay the debts. Thus the new taxes from Parliament hit when the colonies had an even worse than usual cash shortage. It is interesting that Mr. Hanover (a.k.a. George III) privately observed just this problem with the Stamp Act, but publicly he did nothing about it. What Parliament ought to have done was to assume the colonies’ war debt, and then tax the colonies for repayment but accept barter/credit/ colonial paper currency. It would have been cumbersome and time-consuming for the British government to convert goods to cash, but it would have been taxation in a form the colonists could actually have paid. Indeed, by eliminating the need to find rare species Parliament would have been praised by most colonists. In hindsight, we can see the souring of relations starting in 1763, but in reality, things had basically been worked out until the tea crisis of late 1774. That was caused by both sides’ escalating overreactions.
*taken from some guy on quota
In regards to Washington's leadership, we have to remember that the Americans were fighting a much better trained, much larger Army with much more supplies.

Weirdly enough, the Catholic church during that time divided the colonial world between the Spanish and the Portuguese. the Spanish got everything in the Americas except for Brazil, which was outside the Spanish border of control and in the Portuguese side. Which is why Brazil is the only place in south America that speaks Brazilian Portuguese instead of south America Spanish.
The other nations defied the churches orders and went ahead and began colonizing.

You should definitely check out Napoleonic Wars by oversimplified or if you want they have a more detailed video by Epic History TV. And the production on that one is off the chart it's almost like watching a movie. Can't wait to see the next one keep it up Nate!

I remember, or at least think to remember, that the Vikings left America because they´ve seen that it is already claimed by the natives and they went back because they didn´t want to invade that far away from their homeland.

I personally believe that if we'd either allowed representation of "the colonies" in parliament, or at least kept the taxes low, then either the British empire would still be around, or the entire world would currently be part of the commonwealth.

At the time the area that was part of Massachusetts but later broke off Massachusetts and became its own state. There is a sort ~3 minute video explaining where and when the stars on the flag was added. Also, the video explains that Maine broke off of Massachusetts.

My Great (×6) Grandfather Sergeant Benjamin Haskell was actually one of the revolutionaries who fought on Bunker Hill. Supposedly, he was near General Joseph Warren when the general was killed during the battle.

  • @1987MartinT

Washington probably lost more battles than he won, but, as you said, he won the battles that mattered. And victory in battle, while a goal he would pursue time and time again when the opportunity presented itself, wasn't his main priority. His main priority was keeping an army in a combat effective state in the field. As long as he did that the British couldn't win.

I never heard that someone else fired first what I have heard was that one of the British guards was hit and took a fall and his musket went off. And that the colonists was shouting shoot. Fire. Like they wanted the British to shoot at them. Also John Adams. One of the founding fathers and future president actually represented the British soldiers in court and won.

It actually wasn’t fair for Britain to tax the colonies. The colonists were technically British subjects, meaning that they had (or should have had) the same rights as Englishmen, which is why they protested getting taxed, cause they thought it wasn’t fair

Sorry to hear what happened between you and that history teacher. I've tried getting into a disagreement with a history teacher myself. He left a question open to personal opinion, and then didn't like my personal opinion. He asked what I thought the most important thing Harald Bluetooth did during his reign was. He thought it was introducing christianity as state religion. I think it was uniting the entirety of Denmark. Luckily, while we didn't agree on the answer to the question, we did agree that the question was open to personal opinion. And both of those things were important things that Harald Bluetooth did during his reign. We just didn't agree which was the most important. Seems like your history teacher was ill-informed. Which isn't a crime. Nobody, not even teachers, knows everything. What he did wrong, which offends me, is that he, apparently(judging by how easy it is to find out that there were multiple riders, and not just one), didn't look into what he was teaching very much, and instead just parroted a commonly held misconception. When teaching, you should do your research and not assume you know. Now, if I'm wrong, and he did do his research, and the source or sources for his research misinformed him, then it's more forgivable.
