  • This video shows how I used a Chamberlain garage door opener and modified it to use as a Sliding Gate opener. I built this in 2017 and it has worked very well. Two reasons for having the gate are to keep the dog off the highway and to keep people from turning at our driveway. They think it is the turn for the county road down another 100 yards. All together I had around $2000.00 into all of it. 300 into the opener, 700 for the rollers, and 500 in the tubing and welding. The posts and concrete probably were another 500. One note of caution, with the eyes bypassed you don't have much for safety. I did turn down the downforce, so it is pretty low. Plus, I tend to be in view of the gate when I am closing it. Opening is not as important. My Redneck Gate Opener! #diy #slidinggate #slidinggateoperators

My dogs would love to hang out down by the shop with me and this gate would absolutely solve that problem. Time to really dig into the options. Thanks for the video

How did you connect the belt to the old chain? Have you had any problems with the connections over the years? I have a similar gate that has a chain. The opener is a “Nice” brand, I believe, but don’t know much about it. I like the idea of a belt so I don’t have to worry about the chain rusting but I do lubricate it every few months.

If you can get a look at a belt drive garage door opener you will see where the belt connects to the carriage at each end. The end that has the tensioner has one link of chain, so all I did was extend it. Thinking that the chain would flex if needed, but the chain has rusted to the point that it doesnt move anymore. Really doesnt need to be chain, could just be attached to the gate at that point. The only issue I've had with the belt is that one time it jumped off the idler pulleys. I don't remember if it was to much snow or freezing rain that was the culprit. I did a short today of the gate moving in sub zero temps.
