    I met Paul back in the late 80’s at a clinic he did. After it was over he hung out and spoke to fans. He just kept on staying and I wasn’t about to leave. Lol He asked me if there was much to do in this town and I said, this is pretty much it. He sat there and just played his guitar and shot the bull. Nicest guy ever. It turns out Paul was as big a fan of Eddie Van Halen as everyone else was. It was stunning to me at the time, because Paul could clearly blister the frets off of the guitar and it was all so tasteful. But he just kept geeking out over Eddie and played pretty much every Eddie riff and solo right there like it was his greatest joy. That was just the best, he’ll never know what he did for us few there that evening. This was right before Mr. Big came out, so I’m thinking 1987 or so. Great memory of an amazing musician and person.

    Paul Gilbert is the best teachers out of all of the guitar masters. These other guitar prodigies can't teach. Watch their teaching videos sometime. Paul is the best at that. He knows music theory so very well and he can describe things to you as if you are a beginner and just learning for the first time, even if you are an intermediate player. He never talks down to his students. He's always nice and polite.

      burnindownthehouse This is exactly what I love about Paul Gilbert. I love Steve Vai, Joe Satriani, Yngwie Malmsteen, Tony MacAlpine and all them, but Paul Gilbert is like the mad genius scientist with a heart of gold. As you said, he knows music theory, breaks everything down but can build it back up with passion, soul and a whole lot of love, as well as having a lot of fun with it, like watching a kid on the playground; and that's what's so incredible about Gilbert!
      The only other guy I can think of that's like him, isn't even a guitar player: Jordan Rudess.

      +burnindownthehouse Gilbert is a good teacher. Michael Angelo is also a good teacher. His DVDs Speed Kills and Speed Lives are among the most helpful instructional videos I'v ever come across. Recently however, there has been one man to come along who has completely revolutionized the way guitar technique is explained and taught - Troy Grady. His "Cracking The Code" and "Masters In Mechanics" series are priceless!

      My only complaint about Gilbert's teaching is he has a tendency to try to be a comedian and he's not one or at least not a good one. He actually had cheerleaders chanting for him on one of his instructional videos. It was embarrassing. You'd never see Yngwie pull that shit.

There is a reason players like Gilbert, Becker, Joe Stump, Gus G, Zakk Wylde, Tom Hess, Panos Arvanitis, Kelly Simonz, Guthrie Govan etc... praise Malmsteen. The reality is Yngwie is one of the all time greats, he's much more than just playing fast scales.Calling him an idiot that plays fast scales is absurd and mean-spirited.

    I love the handful of geniuses who are comparing whose virtuosity is better, And then you have the guys that introduce names of players they like, who are definitely not in the pantheon of the greats, as if it somehow has anything to do with the video. Both guys are great.
    Both have influenced legions of players. Malmsteen was definitely the big European sensation and the first post Van Halen player that redefined rock chops.
    Gilbert has chops that are just as good. He did not redefine music but he shares knowledge and is a cool guy who hasn't become a parody. They both were around in the age of cheesy guitarists, albeit the age where guys could really play and still have commercial success. Yngwie is awesome and so is Gilbert. If it came down to who I would get more out of playing with, I suspect it would be Paul because he seems to share information easily, Malmsteen would be a blast if he parties like a real rockstar and is not just some arrogant guitar nerd. Guitar nerds are fine, but if I have to deal with lots of ego, I want lots of chicks and lots of fun to offset the arrogance. Malmsteen seems to be the bigger egomaniac ( Paul seems to have a childlike confidence but also seems humble) and in a way it's understandable but not something that I look for in an influential musician. Miles Davis was an egomaniac and Muddy Waters was a super accessible guy according to what I have read (but I cannot say for sure). All I know is both are fun to listen to.

      @pilotamurorei 8 лет назад +1

      +stratmanuk Randy was famous in the LA scene only until he joined Ozzy. And that leads me to:
      As for TRPs statement, he's TOTALLY forgetting about George Lynch. Even Don Dokken said that he felt George was the heir to the throne after EVH. George Lynch, whatever pile of garbage guitarist he turned into, was far ahead of most of those guys as he came out in 81 with Dokken and had been doing Exciter before that (79 or 80?). George Lynch was more influential than Yngwie AT FIRST (hell if it was for Lynchy boy, ESP would still be a middling guitar maker).

    • @johnmcminn9455
      @johnmcminn9455 3 года назад +4

      Yes except what Yngwie is doing is not playing straight arpeggios Yngwie uses Single note runs different legato and stacatto as well as phrasing .
      Cesario Filho is much closer to what yng really does .
      Paul plays 4 6 and 8 note groupings in ways that can be done much more easily on guitar
      I don't think Paul realizes his ability to pick these sequences the way he does is really unusual .
      4 notes on a string patterns can achieve the same exact thing a what Paul does
      John McLaughlin will always play 4 notes on a string , Paul sounds great but it is his interpretation of shred
      Not really the way di meola McLaughlin John Sykes Shawn Lane or Yngwie would sequence
      What paul does is much harder to do than what they are actually doing, if that makes any sense

    It's safe to say Gilbert totally understands the theory of a malmsteen song, and could play it just as easily. But he does not need to plagiarize malmsteen's work or wish to do so, since gilbert has all his own material to work on.

      +Roland Mátyási Roland, I was just joking...Because Paul always does this Yngwie thing, then acts like he invented it instead...that is why I said that..as if Paul totally created a style and Yngwie would play some of his licks... yeah, right..Yngwie is not so much of a jackoff anymore. He quit drinking in 2005. I saw him on the 2004 tour, he was fat and red eyed, very indulged. I saw him on the 2006 tour, and he was sober and had lost tons of weight, and seemed to be more alive.. so, now he is a family man, and off the stuff, trying to keep it on the good side, gave up the pagan bullshit, and turned to God..after the bad luck he had in the late 80's.. serious bad stuff all in a row..

      +Odd Jørgen Høibø exactly. It's F maj chord but with the bass guitar and rhythm playing the A note as the lowest note and the C next then F. It's not A min like Paul says. Everyone makes mistakes. It's D min G or G7 then C then F (third inversion) then D min 6 then E then Asus 4 to A maj. He just got the A min wrong.

    For what it's worth, for all those who still give YM a bad rap, I remember reading an interview with PG back in the late 80sabout his then band, Racer X, and he said something like: 'All we wanted to do was run around the stage like Angus Young and play like Yngwie Malmsteen.' Which should give you some idea of the high esteem in which PG hold YM. I think they are both truly outstanding technicians but for me YM just has a more genuine eccentricity that gives him more of an X factor.

    Yngwie has emotion and rawness that Gilbert lacks. Gilbert has a very clean and precise technique, but it sounds like a computer spitting dull scales, whereas Yngwie's playing and phrasing breathes. Not to mention the tone that comes from Yngwie's fingers. Gilbert is boring. I've seen both many times live and have liked both since '80s. Gilbert is good just because of the clean and fast technique, but Ynqwie is musically superior to him in my opinnion.

    • @SisterRayVU68
      @SisterRayVU68 9 лет назад +4

      delirymsbat Yngwie gets annoyed when the name Ritchie Blackmore is mentioned. Your original post is why. Yngwie borrowed some of Blackmore's scales but never believed in playing blues scale guitar. That's why he'll never tell a story with his songs. Paul Gilbert has proven that blues scale guitar is essential as jazz drumming in rock music. I knew it in 1986, when a guitar friend was obsessed with Yngwie. I had (still have) Deep Purple's "Made in Japan", and I knew then Ritchie was the more mature guitar player by miles.

      The logical follow-on from what you're saying is: 'without blues scales a musical story can't be told...' which is pretty ridiculous, to be fair - especially if you consider the works of JS Bach, for example, where he literally told epic, biblical stories without a blues scale in sight. The idea that blues is inherently soulful or in some way more emotional is complete rubbish. Music has as much soul and emotion as the performer gives it. A blues scale programmed into a sequencer wouldn't bring tears to anyone's eyes. In fact, I would go as far to say a major reason blues is so popular with guitarists is because the scale can be so easily applied over many chord patterns. It's difficult to hit a wrong note using a blues scale or a pentatonic scale. Unlike the harmonic and melodic minor scales, various modes and exotic scales which require a greater understanding to actually apply.
