for the less techy people, I agree it could have done with a clear verbal explainer about the significance of the output voltage. What this means is that it allows the mobile device to power other devices over the USB cable. So, you can now an external hdd directly to the mobile, and the mobile will power it up and be able to access it. Ordinary USB cable, the power travels the OTHER way, towards the phone, like when you're charging it.

OK, but how can you tell if your cable is OTG or just USB, without cutting it and using a meter?
Is there a recognised OTG symbol or variation of the USB symbol?
This post was 4 years ago. The normal USB has 4 pins, while the OTG has 5 pins. It added the 'sense'. The OTG inside the phone should be enabled. Nowadays, phones defaults to OTG-enabled. My share. I stand corrected. 🙏🙂

micro usb has 5 wires bro . the difference between an otg cable and a standard micro usb is the wire next to the ground is shorted out to the ground. this is how a micro usb designates the host device . if the wire is shorted its a host adapter if it isnt its just assumes you want to charge or transfer data

You did not notice that OTG has 5 VDC available? I plug a usb card that has a LED - if it lights then OTG is available if the device plugged in is detected.

I thing he showed us the difference between usb and otg is that. Usb is an input which means current flows to the phone that’s why the volt meter has no reading meanwhile Otg are used as an output which means the phone is the one who sends current (data) away that’s why he was able to light up the bulb.

i made a USB OTG cable by shorting pin 4 to pin 5 and connected it to the phone , I connected a wireless mouse succesfully.
out of curiosity i used the multimeter to check the voltage on the OTG cable (just like you tested in this video where the voltage was duly registered) and my phone just went dead !!!

It don't explain a thing. Just shows an LED hookup.
But it DOES "explain" the difference, just in a "different" way than expected, and of course, without words.
As we can see, the normal USB-C doesn't output any voltage from the phone. I think this means it can only receive voltage /power from external devices. In other words, it cant be used to provide "USB power" (like a PC, console, TV does) which is something like 5.5 volts, to external devices, EG, Wacom Tablet or a tiny speaker that needs to be powered externally (IE, passive).
The OTG cable clearly outputs voltage, as you can see on the multimeter. That means it can be used to power external devices that dont have their own power supply (EG they dont run on batteries, or mains power) such as a Wacom Tablet.
@@ncshuriken But that part right there was not actually explained, until you did it. I'm was an electrician and was left to wonder what the point was. Hurray for output, it's obvious that's the difference, but why did it matter wasn't addressed. So thank you for that.
USB doesnt produce voltage so all 4 cables are data. OTG gave 5Volts.

Because someone is clueless.The OTG cable uses the 5th pin of micro usb male connector which is connected inside to the ground and converts the usb as a host supplying 5 volt to output.

USB cable and OTG cable are the same cable.. different only mode on your mobile phone.. when OTG mode, your phone will suppies power, when non OTG mode, your phone will received power.. don't get confuse.. the cable not a different

+Takumi Fujiwara power come from phone by enable 'otg' mode.. the phone without otg mode never come output.. if don't belive, try any otg cable to phone not support otg, and, vise, use usb cable, but enable otg mode.. cable is the same.. not different at all..

Dark Kero otg cables are different. Two pins in the mini plug are shorted... The cable is the same, the wiring in the plug is different. Just Google it!

So what is the difference?
unless you know what you are doing and can do it very well just save yourself headache...verify youre phone model has OTG capability (most do) then head over to ebay and buy one for one dollar. sometimes less if you dont mind waiting a couple weeks as it gets slowboated across the ocean lol otherwise messing with the wires again unless you know what you doing and do it very well can cause your phone to get pissed off if you do something wrong ooops ahhh why my phone stop working ahhhhhhh
