I'm a volvo man all day long, i drove an F88 290 from 1976 to 2000, 25 years the same truck as an owner driver, briefly had a F12 400 globetrotter and then a FM9 340 wagon & drag for 13 years, and finally had FH4, 460 GT for 7 years until i retired, So 45 years of a 52 year driving career says it all really ,.ive driven loads of volvo demo's, F16 (old type)F12 with load lugger engine,F1O, FM10,FL12,F7,FL 360 powertronic,the 1st FH420 V1 in 1994,. And the last demo was the FM460 V5 and i agree its a lovely truck to drive, cozy cab after the FH, .
Now that was enjoyable I must say. Plenty laughs , good questions and answers and not just a whole bunch of facts and figures but good information relevant to drivers by drivers who may end up behind the wheel of one of these. Now as a Scania man myself I would have blessed myself passing McCarty’s on the old road in times gone by but I like how Volvo have brought out products that work instead of rushing a product to appease the Green Mob.
That FL cement mixer running 320bhp 1st artic I drove was a Volvo F7 with 240bhp pulling 38 tonne of coal from Durham coalfield down to ferrybridge and drax power stations must have made @ least 1000 gear shifts per day you knew you had done 400 miles in a shift ..I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again Volvo need to sort the pricing out for their flagships…
for me its not that mirror cams exist.. fine whatever stuff moves on. its just too much too soon. its little things. if your driving in the dark, it just looks like every bugger is flashing you. and perhaps most of all, its the fact they can or do fail.... and both of them could fail. which would leave you in a heap of trouble.
are the wing mirrors on these the same as the bus&coach ones which randomly turn off due to screen failures and overheating? Out of a fleet of 20 new coaches we have had 12 just turn off driving down the road giving the driver 0 view either side of the vehicle... dangerous and unfit for service. stupid idea that costs 3k to replace a camera...
WARNING !!! , inexperienced stupid curious question INCOMING !! ? What happens when your in 4 lanes of traffic, or any other crazy tight spot, and it has a Tech malfunction , (Mirrors) ??? ... is it just OH i'M Broke down, pull over , call the Mechanic (sorry CAMERA Guy) . ANYONE Else THINK, it looks lovely and great idea on new trucks WHEN NEW, but wait till truck is 5--7 years old, wear and tear, and working / not working / half working. LOVE your videos mate !!!!
Breaking a camera is no different than breaking a mirror, you won't see back. Except that the huge mirrors are easier to smash into objects than skinny cameras. Truck mirror housings are not cheap to replace either.

Many comments about failures related to mirrors and other tech things. In my view it is about the manufacturer to do it right, Volvo in this case. It is definitely possible to design and make complex systems relying on as many tech things you can imaging. It a black screen happens in an Airbus, it won´t be a happy day. And the newest version of the Gripen Jet fighter (SAAB) has only one large screen. The only difference is the consequences related to the malfunction. But is it definitely possible to design and make reliable systems with such features.
What a great rebut to my question ! . I never looked at it like that, great reply. 👍 Forgive maybe my negative way of looking at it, is it fixing a problem that isn't broke ? I know the argument of streamline/ less air drag / fuel efficiency. I'd love to see Real numbers on that part. Another persons reply, also made good point, of expensive Repair/ replacements to broken mirror housings. But from a Tech point of view, you have totally changed my way of looking at it . Agreed, The steering wheel button setup on the FH V4 was much better.
The Replacement for the DAF LF is the DAF XB/XBC

Fine looking trucks. Dash in the 500 looks very plasticky though.
The only problem with the mirror screen is that I'd keep burning it with my cig!! 😂
