How I design labels for the Munbyn Thermal Printer - Using paid and FREE software

- Since being sent the Munbyn Thermal Printer to test, I have used it almost everyday in the shop and still love it as much as the day I tested it. Although many use this printer for shipping labels, it does so much more!!! Today I am going to show how easy it is to design labels for your printer using both paid and free software.
The printer works with MAC, Windows and ChromeOS. If you are using Google Chrome, you don't need to install the printer driver, just add the extension - Munbyn Printer Extension, you can print directly from Google Chrome. Here is the link to the extension: chrome.google.com/webstore/de...

Not sure if you have found out since this video is about a year old, but, you dont need to manually feed the labels to the front, the printer grabs it and pulls it to the front and like that, you dont "waste" those two labels. In short, you put the first label in the back of the printer, the printer pulls it, and voila! all done with no extra labels in the front :)
Yes, I did discover that after filming this. As it was a review, I was following the instructions they gave, and hopefully, they've changed the booklet

Resolved my problem!! i was trying to use msword but it was cutting the labels off, tried paint with no joy but managed it with 3D Paint, ive saved as a PDF and now can print it first time every time. Thanks

Hi, thanks so much for this tutorial. Quick question. can it print on vinyl sticker paper payment in case your product labels are in black and qhite?
This is a thermal printer so you need special thermal paper. It won't print on regular paper or vinyl.
What did you find were the best settings to get the deep black on the coloured labels? I've tried the highest resolution 300dpi and the highest density 15 and clicked the deeper option, but still find it kind of dull, more grey then black
I have not had to adjust any of the settings on the printer and get a rich dark print each time. You may need to contact Munbyn directly to ask them
What is the process when you use it for shipping labels? What I mean by that is, do you pay in advance to the post office or pay when you take your package to the post office to be shipped. How does that work? I hope this makes sense. Thank you! 😊

Thanks for the video! For some reason my letters don’t print smooth. I even tried do download in the highest resolution from Canva but it does not print the smooth outline of the letters. Any suggestions?
Sorry to hear your having issues. I have never had issues with printing. You may need to contact munbyn directly to see what suggestions they have
Thank you! I do have a problem. I don't have those settings for the paper. Don't know how that came about. just about to throw that thing against the wall. Would someone be able to help me? Have the newest Software on iMac and Macbook. :)
You may need to add them yourselves. I have done another video showing how to add paper sizes. If you continue having problems, best to contact munbyn directly

Thank you. I've not yet tried it but you should be able to buy any direct thermal labels on the market to go through the machine. I'm hoping to get some this month to try

Hello, is the printing quality sufficient to sell personalized labels for events (weddings, etc.)?
Printing quality is great though I wouldn't use this for printing personalised labels. You can only print in black and labels are for short term not long term use. They will fade and most personalised items need to last a long time

Yes, thermal printing will fade over time - think of receipts you get from shops. These are usually thermal printed. Heat also affects them, so they may not make the best labels for candles.

Sorry I don't use a mac so can't help there. You may need to find someone demonstrating with a mac to get the right commands
Not all thermal printers are limited to single color printing. It depends on the paper being used and the print technology. For example, Zero Ink printers (aka ZINC) have full color printing capabilities. The print head for that type of thermal printing paper works differently that this simpler type of thermal printer. ZINC papers will change color if exposed to the right amount of heat and duration to trigger one or more of the three color sub-layers. One color per layer within the paper itself. Thermal printers tend to have the lowest print quality as well. Anywhere from 300x300 DPI at the high end or lower. These are all essentially draft modes for receipt printers.
It is still important to note that a thermal printer does not print colour. It works off of heat as I explain in video. It is true that you can get colour if you have the right paper but at the time of making this video, munbyn did not have it so i wasn't about to go into the science of it and confuse people when its a sponsored video. They do have limited ones now.
Thermal Printers can be useful for many short term projects like shipping labels and of course as receipt printers which I have. I do not recommend them for items that need long lasting labels or come into contact with heat.
Did you have any issues with the green munbyn labels? Mine will not print dark and they are blotchy.
I've not used the green labels but I've not had problems with other colours. You may need to contact Munbyn for more help 💚

@Siren Kimmie as mentioned above, I've not had any problems with my labels. I use both theirs and another companies in colour and white and all work fine
What font do you use for the ingredients label? I tried it today & you can barely read it.
I use all sorts of fonts but for the legal stuff I always pick a basic like trial or times new roman

Thermal printers work through applying heat to special paper, turning it black. There is no ink so no colour

That's correct. This only prints black due to it being thermal
for some reason the 2" paper size option is not showing on mine. Is there a step I am missing?
I'm not sure why that would happen. Maybe write to Munbyn to find out why.
@@SoyandShea I figured it out eventually! I had to actually go to the printer settings on my pc and set up 2" by 2" option before following these steps. Thank you for the video, I now have stickers :D

I really want to know if this stickers label are waterproof??
The Munbyn labels are waterproof in that you can send them through the post and rain will not smudge them.
I still have the issue with 1 label being wasted every time I load the labels - it doesn't grab it at the back and pull to the front
I only just recently discovered how to load the machine so you don't waste paper. It's too hard to explain in writing, but I did demonstrate how to do it in the January vlog 🧡
when i change my paper size to 2" x 2" my text goes really blurry. do you know how i can fix this?
You need to make sure you're creating your artwork to the size you actually want to print
@@SoyandShea I have done that, created 2" by 2", looks fine when downloaded and opened up, its when i change the print size on the printing spec to 2" by 2" that it goes blurry x

I bought a different one and the quality was horrible on some smaller fonts, what's the quality actually like
I'm super happy with the printer. Even when printing fine point down to 6pt, it prints clearly
Can you use your own logo that I have for my business printed on those stickers?
Yes. I have printed my logo with the sticker. Just keep in mind, it will only print in grayscale and no colour

You would need to set this in the print settings. I have done another video showing how to use different size and brand labels.
What is the name of the application or software you’re using where you place the PNG from Canva?
I use Adobe Illustrator but you can use any vector program or print straight from the picture image too

How long does the print last before it fades? I’m looking to buy but for international shipping labels which takes 15 days or longer…hope the print stays that long?

@nobodynothing2594 that's a how long is a piece of string question. The labels will last long enough for shipping but they are affected by things like heat and UV light. This will affect their life. I have some labels that have lasted for years which are on things in dark places and others only a few months when they've been in direct sunlight
Ive downloaded the program but where do i find it
Which program? What operating system do you use? If it's Windows, it should have downloaded to your download folder
I have a munbyn printer as well, but mine will not calibrate no matter what I do. It's so frustrating! It'll just keep feeding labels through or when it does print it prints a tiny bit and not the entire label.
The only time I've had problems with it feeding labels is when I had the measurements out by 1mm. If everything is set perfectly, it may be worth contact Munbyn in case of a fault
@@SoyandShea I contacted support but they sent me back an email telling me to insert my labels, hold the feed button down til it beeped once, and then I'd be set to go. That was not the case 😂 A coworker gave me another idea to try to reset the printer, so I'm hoping that works. The method I found online did not help either. I'm about to buy a different printer at this point >.

No I don't. If you are, it may need cleaning or there could be something stuck near the heat area

You need to print on special thermal paper so you can't print on Avery labels

Thermal printers only print black unless you have special paper. Munbyn do have gold stickers
what do you do when the labels dont align?
Usually, if labels don't align, it means there is a user error. Either it has not been loaded straight or the measurements are off. I try reloading the paper and I check both my artboard is the right and the paper is the right size.

Why won't it print your colored hearts? I thought it printed in color as well as grayscale
The printer is thermal meaning it burns the image into the paper. Grayscale is not colour. It will do varying shades of black including grey by changing the degree of heat.

The only situation I have where the labels come into contact with water is when I use them as shipping labels. I have not had any short term effects when it rains. I don't use them as labels for products that come into contact with water so I don't know how long they will last in that situation.

@magnoliaswhiteoak that's great news they could confirm it. I've never tested over them over a long period, so I wasn't 100% sure.

Probably best to message munbyn about that. I've not had problems with the amount of printing I do but I'm don't need it running 24 hours a day
Is this the Basic or Pro machine?
This is the pro - the one for Australia Post labels
Not all thermal printers have the issues you describe, if you get one that uses a ribbon the label is unaffected by heat.
The issues I mention were all concerns others have brought up by those using a direct thermal printer which are more common than thermal transfer printers. The advantage though is you don't have to replace ribbons
I'll have to contact them to see if they can do custom design labels.

I am really struggling with the round labels and not being centred. I have adjusted offset and wasted over 100 stickers. Munbyn are not helpful at all!
I've not had any issue with alignment on round labels. Make sure when loading the labels they are loading correctly. If it looks like it's uneven, reload them. Also, make sure the guides are tight against the labels so they feed straight.
5:00 Put anything on top of the cables, it would solve the issue just the same.
That won't really solve it. The wires need to go under something so they don't rock. It's a design flaw
Munbyn advised me that the Pro does all shipping labels.
At the time of recording this video, there were two options of printers on the website whereas now it appears to be only the one which is more compatible with Australia post but will do all labels.
You’re supposed to feed the paper through the back so there is no waisted paper
I am actually feeding it through the back per the instructions that come with the machine. The wasted stickers was annoying me and I have since found a video put out by Munbyn showing an alternative way to load the stickers. I will show in a future video 😁

For a number of reasons. As I explained in the video, the screen recorder I had at the time didn't record the actions in the program I use for designing, so it would have been difficult to see the screen. The steps are standard to printing anything from software in that you select print, the paper size and print. This is the third video in this series. And the first couple do show that process.
