    We are glad to help! Some riders prefer to work on their own bike. Of those, some know how, and some do not. We try to help everyone that likes to work on their own R1 do so. However, there is nothing wrong with and we actually encourage you to support your local bike shop however you can. Get your parts there or some gear, or cool T's, etc. Glad you were able to get your fix!

    but to those of you who come across this with an 09 R1, directions from the manual say:
    Remove: side cowlings, lower cowlings, fuel tank, air filter case, radiator, radiator fan.
    Disconnect: ignition coil
    Remove: spark plugs (first blow away dirt accumulated in the spark plug wells so it doesn't fall into cylinders.
    Hope that helps!

    Before watching this video. I tried by removing the tank. Now thanks for this great video I can get it done my self instead of paying $90 an hr. at my local bike shop.

    Great video. very informative. I have a 07 r1. Is the procedure the same? Some people say to remove the tank. I tried to find 07 r1 spark plug videos but no one has it in detail like you do.

    I'm not sure how much will carry over from the Thundercat to the R1 but when I used to do work on my 1999 FZR 600 the procedure was basically the same. You will have different bolts perhaps, but the job itself should be similar. Good luck!

    Iridium Spck PLugs = OWN . great vid.

  • @R1VideosdotCom
    @R1VideosdotCom  11 лет назад

    Agreed! The Iridium plugs are killer - me and Todd both have them in our R1's and love them. Thanks for watching. If we can ever share a tip, hit us up on email. Just go to our website R1Videos and get our email from the contact page.

    great video! and very helpful! does it matter in which order you put the caps back on?

  • @R1VideosdotCom
    @R1VideosdotCom  12 лет назад

    The book recommends you check your plugs after every other oil change. So you check them at 4K miles (change if needed), change at 8K miles. Repeat. Personally I change mine every 8K miles to 10K miles, but you would benefit by changing them more often than that since they really aren't that expensive. Good plugs = good performance

    clearly a bit late, but i was just going through the vids and saw your comment. i have an 09 R1 Service Manual (pdf) if you want me to email it to either of you guys for future questions.

    Todd is asking around for tips from all of his previous bike shops he's worked for - - we haven't worked on a 2009 R1 yet so we'll have to see what some of his buddies come back with - - unless someone here reading the comments has some tips!?

    Great video I'm about to do my plugs on my 06R1 I got it with low 6k miles on 11 riitgh now is at mid 15k miles and I had never change or even check the plugs(shame on me) and for my luck it sounds good(it dosent sounds like a shot when I let the gas go) still but ii got ngk iridium plugs and with this video I deff feel comfortable enough to do it but I think I will go trough the tank way because I also puting k&n air filter but if anything I do this way you guys show here

  • @mll809
    @mll809 11 лет назад

    I alredy my plugs and air filter I remove the air box and all that and it was almost imposible to change the plugs that way like the manual said I had to do it this waay regarless....thanks you for the little trick

  • @R1VideosdotCom
    @R1VideosdotCom  11 лет назад

    Yes, they are gapped already out of the box. Go with the iridium plugs, we like them a lot so far!

  • @R1VideosdotCom
    @R1VideosdotCom  12 лет назад

    yeah, it's a good idea to dab a little anti seize on the plugs - not too much - just enough to spread around with your fingers on the threads.

    did you mention something about applying some sort of grease? anti seize?

  • @R1VideosdotCom
    @R1VideosdotCom  12 лет назад

    If you are not having problems, then no worries. You can just change every 8K. But when you do, just notice the wear, coloration, etc. Are they really going that bad at 8K? Could you have gone another 2K? So just keep that in mind and watch the plugs when you take them out each time. Keep a file on the mileage that you change them. Also, when you pull them, like we said, you just might as well change them. I don't even check mine every 4K because I know they last 8K+ for the most part.

  • @R1VideosdotCom
    @R1VideosdotCom  11 лет назад

    Is it dirty inside the cap? Clean out the cap and see if the roughness goes away. It should snap in place with a little pressure but shouldn't be rough as you describe. If damaged then you might have to replace. Clean first tho

  • @kuntie23

    how often/miles do you recommend changing the plugs? cheers

    Also it does run . Would it be hurting it by running it that way ?

  • @fauxhemia

    Thanks! What about Dielectric grease? (sp)

  • @R1VideosdotCom
    @R1VideosdotCom  12 лет назад

    No. Use anti seize or nothing at all on your spark plug threads. Either way is fine - with or without. Anti seize can be picked up at any auto parts store and is cheap.

  • @R1VideosdotCom
    @R1VideosdotCom  12 лет назад

    I would not remove the tank unless you must. The procedure is the same yes. Remove old plugs one at a time (or all at once like we do in the video ONLY if your bike is extremely clean so nothing falls down into your engine like mud or leaves or anything). Then put anti-seize on the new plugs, install, and button it all back up. Let us know if you have any more questions.

    Does brand or price of spark plugs make any difference?

  • @R1VideosdotCom
    @R1VideosdotCom  12 лет назад

    It would require more steps and more work and I'm not sure it would really be worth it since the frame is still in your way. But try it and let us know if it makes a big difference.

    I was taking off on the freeway the other day and notice it sounded like a dirt bike after . Im guessing it is running on 3 cylinders. Do you think by changing out my spark plugs it would get it up running again ? I have a 98 cbr6oo

    actually i have a quick question.. i have this Yamaha R1 is not starting.. after i checked the coils/sparck i noticed they jump not so quick.. like "tac..tac..tac"... is that normal on this bikes? cause most of old old bikes (carburetor oones) the sparck jumps VERy quickly like tactactactac! very fast... do you have ANY idea about this? Thanks a lot

    Would this be the same process changing a spark plug on my 2001 YZF 600r Thundercat? I cant find any videos online on how to do this and the garage are going to charge me stupid money for them to do it. Thanks in advance.

  • @swaggerboy740

    Do they come pre gapped ?

  • @R1VideosdotCom
    @R1VideosdotCom  11 лет назад

    Doesn't matter in which order you put the caps back on, but does matter which caps you put on which plugs. They are cut to size so it should be easy to know which caps reaches and goes on which plug. Does this help? If not, head over to our site and get our email. We'll be able to help you better through email. Good luck!

  • @R1VideosdotCom
    @R1VideosdotCom  12 лет назад

    Brand matters, yes. Price, no. A company that puts top quality materials together, tests their products, & doesn't take shortcuts (doesn't exist - just kidding) will have a better product. But you have to look at the product itself. Don't let the price trick you into thinking that the product is better than the quality product just because the price is higher. Usually you get what you pay for, but sometimes, quality parts are cheaper. Sorry, this is Robert, and I'm a marketer at my day job.
