Amazing to hear the different sounds of the different engines. The low whine of the Mercedes 500, the scream of the Ford XB & Ilmor and the odd hum of the Buick V6.
Yeah, my favorites being both the Chevy and Ford engines (I know, I know... Ilmor and Cosworth) . They sure had a unique sound. I've never heard any race engine sound like the old Indy V8s. R.I.P.
that Mercedes was a great piece of work - powerful, reliable, and ran a mximum of 9,500-10,000 rpm. The Buicks made more of a "Clunk-Clink" sound - when, not if, they broke down :)
An extremely dominant car. Nonetheless, Al Unser Jr was an extremely popular driver and not too shabby behind the wheel. A really nice guy and very down to earth.
And no one bitched about no GWC back then and accepted that races end under yellow sometimes. A shame how much Nascar has ruined racing in America. I was a big Little Al fan so '94 was a magical year for me as a fan.
I too am reading the book Beast (great read btw) which is why I am re-visiting this race here now. In response to the prior post regarding the Honda, a Honda engined car would have won the race in 1995 had Scott Goodyear not passed the pace car...
Thank you Tony George for screwing the Indy 500 in 1996. CART should have ran in 1996 despite the 25/8 rule and should have sued IMS and USAC to be allowed to run. The US 500 was so dumb and never should have been organized.
that Mercedes Benz engine is a one-off race engine taken from a page on the rulebook allowing additional boost for production based overhead pushrod valve engines... Buick's druing that time benefit from the additional boost... Penske took advantage of that rule by producing a one-off engine used only once in the 1994 Indy 500...
The irony is that Penske proved to be right because they had narrowed the track the year before. And just a couple years later, bigger displacement (albeit naturally aspirated) engines would become the standard for IndyCar until 2012. The point is bigger engine, more torque and less rpm. If I recall, the Mercedes 500l only had to turn just over 10,000 rpm, whereas the smaller Ford/Cosworth and Ilmor engines had to turn close to 14,000 rpm just to generate even close to the 1,000 hp the 500l did.
bjmicha3 They didn't ban it as such; the IRL regs banned both the 500I and CART-spec engines in the end, but the changes in time for 1995 were two boost reductions that meant that the 500I could have been used for the 1995 race, but it would not have been competitive.
bjmicha3 TG gets my vote for the most milquetoast leader in the history of organised sports, at least in the motorsport category. Even his supporters would have to agree. If I had to think of an antonym for passion, Tony George would come to mind.
UberAntisocialist A book has been released recently about the Ilmor 265E/Merc 500I project, and it also features a bit of an account about how TG eventually ended up pushing the IRL idea, and... completely right on the last sentence, it had nothing to do with passion, it was all a cynical, petulant and ill-fated powergrab from the beginning.
bjmicha3 The PC23 wasn't "inferior", after all it won 11 out of 15 non-Indy races. The problem was that the 500I sent them in the wrong direction on chassis setup in '94, and when they came back in '95 with the PC24 they were way too far down a blind alley to get the cars working again. Penske did run a test at Indy late in '95 with the PC24 and they did manage to get the cars to 230+ mph lap speeds at that point, but of course - too little too late.
Exactly. Anyone that's ever been even somewhat close to a competition car knows that chassis setup is in direct relationship to the output and the nature of the output of the engine. Setups even on the same chassis will vary differently for a low end torque monster vs a high rev pulling screamer; if a chassis is designed around a specific high power engine, and then that engine is suddenly choked off, the car behaves differently. With less power, the car is likely to oversteer coming out of the apex of a turn, simply because it is taking marginally longer to navigate that turn rather than power through it. That may not have been something that could have been overcome with a setup, as it may have been inherent in the geometry of the chassis.
I was 17 when this race was on SKY. The build up made my hairs stand on end. I remember it to this day. Great names in this race. The real thing. I loved the way it went down the grid looking into the eyes of the drivers during the National Anthem. They do it differently now as the drivers stand up. More respectful but not as real.
That plastic bag did cost Emmo the race because if he didn't have to stop to get it out of the radiator he would've caught Little Al alot earlier than he did and he probably would've taken his time lapping him. He should've just followed him regardless and won his third race but the Milk Gods made sure that that didn't happen
Dennis Vittolo was a rank amateur who but for pure luck would have decapitated Nigel Mansell, one of the best drivers to ever drive an Indy Car, by plowing into cars entering the pits on the apron while UNDER YELLOW like a kid rear-ending someone at a stoplight because they're texting. Was he asleep? People giving him credit for admitting blame...how could he NOT admit it? What he should have done is announced his retirement from racing out of pure embarrassment and in the interest of other driver's safety. I wouldn't hire the guy to valet cars. As for people taking issue with Nigel's attitude in the post-incident interview, he was just about to get back on the lead lap and right back in the race and he'd just been knocked out of it, and could have very easily been killed while coasting into the pits during a yellow....things like that just do NOT happen at this level of racing. Also, was concussed. What did you expect his attitude to be? The fact he spoke to Gary at all speaks to what a gentleman he is. And also, remember this was right after both Senna and Roland Ratzenburger had been killed in the same F1 race, and emotions were very raw. This was the golden era (80's-mid 90's) of CART and IndyCar but the 500 had too many backmarker ringers, and Vittolo was the worst example of this in the race's modern history. Embarrassing.
What's the deal with Paul Page saying Hiro Ma-shoo-sta, as opposed to Maht-sue-sheet-a? I read somewhere that this was done so they didn't accidentally say "shit" on the air...can anyone confirm or deny?
Thanks again for your upload!! I used to be a big fan of Mansell back in the day, but after seeing 2 interviews with him today (pre-race and post doctor visit) I'm disappointed. Seems like an asshole to me. I can understand being disappointed after being run down, but he sure didn't handle himself very well on camera. Perhaps I'm wrong, but I inferred from his comment(s) that the CART series has a bunch of idiot drivers and organizers and he's not impressed by any of it.
Mansell was fine in F1 and CART when he was winning, but when things were not going his way he would piss and moan, generally behaving like a brat. I have great respect for Nigel's aggressiveness while driving, but his personality left a lot to be desired.

RIP Florence Henderson & Jim Nabors. Thank you for your contribution to the pageantry of the Indy 500!
1994. My favourite Indy 500 of all time apart from many others.
1992 was better. So was 93.
@@afridgetoofar1818 yes and 1995 too.
By Far the best Looking and best sounding Indy cars other than the 50's 60's and 70's for which I wasn't alive then!

You gotta love that intro music. Same song from Delta Force, just awesome.
Tony George the Wicked..
Was a great day and race.
Al Jr. Was a crowd favorite and one of mine as well.
And no one bitched about no GWC back then and accepted that races end under yellow sometimes. A shame how much Nascar has ruined racing in America. I was a big Little Al fan so '94 was a magical year for me as a fan.
NASCAR hasn’t ruined anything.
cpthornman NASCAR is a joke now. Of course so is the spilt in Indy. I haven’t watched either since the early 2000’s.
A big little Al?😂
gary gerald does a great job a true professional!
I'm reading "Beast" By Jade Gurss & Mario Illien. It's about the pushrod motor developed for this race. Very interesting.
I too am reading the book Beast (great read btw) which is why I am re-visiting this race here now. In response to the prior post regarding the Honda, a Honda engined car would have won the race in 1995 had Scott Goodyear not passed the pace car...
Fucking Chuck Yeager did the fly-over in this race! Incredible.
Can you imagine that Mercedes engine in a decent chassis of the era? Say a 96 Reynard? They would probably have broken 240
Penske chassis was ok
Classic Indy with best all time drivers!
Good intro. But my god Paul Page literally says "These eyes" like 100 times in that intro.
Mario is a hell of a guy
Indeed. I saw a post of him on Twitter during the St. Petersburg race weekend this year signing autographs for hours.

Needless to say, Penske simply used the rules to his advantage. BUT, they still had to finish (and win) the race, just like every other team, right?
Notice how Dick Simon concludes his prerace interview with Jack Arute. (39:00) Very telling for 1995.
The race that made the legend of the Mercedes-Benz 500I engine... and then bit Penske heavily in the nether regions a year later.

Al Jr., “The vacuum cleaner got him!”.
Tim Allen. A classic case of "ask a stupid question, get a stupid answer".
Tim was, shall we say, heavily into a certain substance at this time in his life....
1:08:22 has anybody ever counted how many times Andretti stalled it after a pit stop ?
Always happy when something bad happens to Eddie Cheever.
Look at that running order after 74 laps scorecard: 1:29:42
Penske does his homework.
indyfan2 what exactly does that mean? He ran 1 2 practically all day. What's the big deal at that point?
That Tim Allen interview, so awkward.
Been watching the a Indy 500 for a very long time still can't believe race control allowed that star

Personally, I think it was the milk gods punishing Emmo for drinking OJ the previous year.

Jeez, that Mario "these eyes" bit at the beginning went on WAY too long.
na. you have to understand the man, who he was and that it was his last 500. 30 years of racing

That was the last real Indy 500.
No, 1995 was. The split didn't happen until 96.
thanks for post video. Great job. from France.

Is there a way to get digital copies of this race and the '95 race?? I wish I had copies to watch from time to time.
Use a YT DL'er freeware software. They're out there.

+Alexander Love It's the theme from "Delta Force" and was composed by Alan Silvestri.
+sunarcherphoto Thanks!!!
What an awfully aligned start to the race. The green flag flew so late too... he should have made them go around again.
Poor Stan Fox if he didnt have bad luck he wouldnt have no luck at all
He had a 7th in 1987 (rookie year) and was 8th in 1991 (high Buick, intended for the late BV3).
what's the starting grid theme??
"Europe" by Tom Blades. Just search it on here and a clean version will come up.
