Fabulous aircraft, my late Father was a Spitfire pilot in the 2nd WW and flew in the North Africa campaign as well as other theatres of war, at the end of the NA campaign the pilots were sent to Durban for some R & R before departure on a ship to UK prior to flying in Italy to paste Hitler on their withdrawal from Italy. Well the ship got torpedoed by a U boat 1 day out from Durban and my Dad and 3 others were spotted and recovered by a Catalina. I saw this one flying at Duxford a couple of years ago and it sent a chill down my spine.
My uncle was a Catalina Pilot in WW2, he had a years training in Canada in 1938/9 he explained to me how difficult they could be coming in to land on water, they could flip over at the last minute, he explained there was a technique to landing them. This sub hunter could stay up for about 36 to 38 hours, no heating on board. He was based in Northern Island. I think he had a crew of 8 and most were from the common wealth. oh at the end of the war all the Catalinas were scuttled.
It's a pretty airplane.
The PBY-5A, flown by Aiden Marks, was the type of plane that found the survivors of the USS Indianapolis sinking. Thank you for posting this video (I love Duxford!). I showed this to my students.
(THIS wasn't the specific plane, I only meant it was this type of plane!)
I have a daydream of fitting out a Catalina like a kind of flying Winnebago and travelling the world in it. Land or sea, no-where's out of range.
SAME! that or an Grumman Albatross. But I want turboprop conversion. Very happy a company in Australia called AAI has obtained the rights & finally making a new modern Albatross. I need to hit the lottery first for any plane but a flying boat RV is my ultimate dream. PBY catalina & Albatross are my dream Flying boat RV turboprop conversions. Just need it to be single pilot rated with modern avionics
What a beautiful bird. Imagine the ecstasy of being adrift in the ocean and seeing this beauty coming in for you !!!
What a graceful and beautiful bird! And radial motors, what a beautiful sound. I am so happy we have people keeping these "old birds" flying.
IMO, one of the most beautiful aircraft ever built
BEAUTIFUL!! 4:18 Is best part for me!!!
I'm impressed those radials didn't puff smoke when they started
The Sign of well maintained radials, lovely old bird.
They both did a little, exhaust is over the wing though so didn't see it much
Yesterday I went in one. Quite awesome if u ask me. The cockpit looks wonderful from the inside and I would literally sit in it all day if I had the chance to.
Love the PBY.... Thanks!
Great Plane, she can still do it! Great Pilot too! Set her down gently on those main wheels and real kind to that small nose wheel! Those Catalinas are my favorites! Thanks! Great Video!👍🇺🇸🌈!!
Very nice video/filming of a gorgeous plane. Thank you for this.
This plane always amazes me. In comparison to its size, the engines look so small and yet this beautifully ungainly bird not only flies but it does it so gracefully. Truly the bumblebee of ww2 era planes!
An absolutely beautiful white Catalina flying boat just flew over my house here in Toronto , Ontario in Canada . It was travelling east bound toward the downtown Toronto core following the Lake Ontario shoreline . Time was 2:14 PM Sunday Sept/13/2020 . It was following the shoreline of the Great Lake Ontario . Three hours ago I saw it for the first time in the air flying west bound past the westerly border of Toronto . It was great to see , especially on such a bright clear sunny Sunday . This Catalina flies out of the Hamilton Aircraft Museum in Hamilton , Ontario here in Canada .
Great airplane I flew a lot of hours in one as a radar bombing instructer in 1944

my uncle piloted one for 5 years in WW2 he flew with 202 Sqn. Northern Ireland. had their reunions in Gib.
I like the sound of the pby catalina while taking off at 2:57
What a beautiful plane
One of the key contributors to the US success at Midway.
One just flew over my house ! Just now 19.15 Rusthall, UK, prob about 2500 ft going real slow... What a treat. Said to the wife and she just said "that's nice dear"... carried on watching stranger things on telly.
Really nice video. Thanks for posting it.
Love the PBY-5A, My Favorite Seaplane / Flying Boat.
it has it
Awsome aircraft. My all-time favorite.
Beauty in flight!
My dad flew around in those PBY 's during WW11 off the Canadian east coast . One morning while out on patrol the port waist gunner opened fire at something with his big 50 . My Dad then yelled down the fuselage "What are you firing at ?" The waist gunner smiled and called back "Seagulls" ! ........... Oh my god ! Those seagulls were soooooo dead ! But all in all it's beautiful aircraft , I wish I had one . I saw one last summer flying over Toronto .
We have one of these at the museum, amazing aircraft. One of my favourites.
One of my favorite Aircraft. The first one I ever saw I was about five in 1970's California on the Coast. The last was in Heber City Utah a few years ago they had a Air show going on. It kept flying over my Freinds Horse Ranch I was was too busy to go see it on the ground. I just felt like it was calling me out to go for a ride. 😁
i know the one your talking about--i have seen it at lake powell before
Thank you!
when they fly to the Dublin airshow they often ither fly to the show or back above our house and at work. One of the best sites in the world seen that old cat
One of those aircraft that is truly a pleasure to fly.
Fantastic video. Wish there had been a camera inside the aircraft.
Catalina my all time Love!
Favorite plane of all time right there.
One of my favorite planes. Catalina
Beautiful Plane!!! My great grandpa flown one of these and (if my grandma's story is true) he was the first to divebomb in one of these!
Hold on to your excitement folks, because this plane is coming back again and it’s going to be better and modern then ever. Who’s excited for the Catalina 2?
Nice to see how the propeller rotation looked natural, without the strobe effect.
So beautiful and majestic.
Great!!!
So beautiful...
How practical would one of these actually be to use for an "adventure vacation" type of business?
Thanks for the vid. What an elegant machine! I am sure that there is still a need for a modern day version with a reasonable capacity to fly world wide. Any suggestions?
There are lots of single engine light bush plane types. Japan has a 4 engine Shin Maywa US 2 available, and China is working on a 4 engine version. The Russian Be 103 has two engines, but doesn’t have the range or payload. The BE 200 has two jet engines, but the new re-engined version seems to be on hold.
@@glypnir...
I wonder what the cost per hour is to operate those 4 engine models...
Beautiful!!
Hermoso avión me hizo recordar mí infancia.👏👏👏
Really beautifull aircraft😮.
One of my favourites.. the cat... 👍
Is there a formula for a measured amount of drag versus horsepower?
Best plane ever built...great landing too.
My favorite airplane.
In the air he dance, wonderfull ! !

PBY my hero!
I wonder how well that old airframe would fair when landing on water, propably would be fine.
That exact one is proven still fully capable of landing on water. Though they had some problems a while back when they landed her on Loch Ness (insert routine jokes here) and one of the engines went when they tried to take off again. Cue hasty and tricky refit process on lakeside slipway.
Very. Very. Nice. 👍🏻🇺🇸
to me that is the best plane in the world--you seen the one the guy turned into a flying apartment?not sure if it was a 5
A little ungainly on the ground but a dream ship in the air.
Nice video. Since the aircraft has wheels for land-based operations, it's not a flying boat. Technically, it's an amphibian. Just nit-picking.
My all time favorite war bird.
Is it still water capable?
my uncle died in one of these, he didn't see how shallow the water was in the lake (Chile, 1961)
Lo lamento!
Nice!
This is the aircraft in the DC-serie Pennyworth :-). Season 2 Cap 07
What happened to the plane's wingtip floats?
I saw at one point he had them deployed while in the air. I have loved this plane since I was about 5 but never realized they had retractable wing tip floats. When he took off, solid Wing no floats. In the air, after a cut in the footage, bam, floats! 🤯 kept my strict attention until I watched him retract the floats back into wingtip position. I swear this plane gets more beautifully elegant every time I lay eyes on one.
CATALINA in AMAZÔNIA BRASIL.
I would have thought that the props would be counter rotating but they’re turning the same direction.
I’m not a pilot or engineer, so maybe I’m off.
No flaps on a PBY . ?
vrosi1963 no just a big fat wing
vrosi1963 mhm.
I want one
Wow
The Martin Mariner was much more performant, but it never replaced the robust and reliable PBY. Great

Sell me this goes amphibious aircraft, and sold me this water lake, how much it costs, I used as a means to go to school,
Like playn carton (montana)
,👍👍👍🙂
I wonder if that is the owner's daughter that was painted on the side? No?
It is demeaning to women to portray them in that way if you wouldn't paint the same pose for your own daughter.
Pinup girls have a loong tradition on warbirds. Nothing to get triggered about
Short answer, no.
Is it demeaning that many vessels on the sea, air and land have feminine names attached to them? No, it is meant to honor the name.
Is it demeaning and a violation of child labor laws that I have to work for a living?.. No, I grew up, had aspirations, obligations and bills to pay.
Be like me, grow up.
P.S. I guarantee you that painting is a close representation of someone's daughter and no harm came to them as a result of their likeness being on an airplane.
my sisters, daughters posed many times in a way that your sick mind might find demeaning,my wife too at car shows when she was young---you need help little bobie ...waaaaa waaaaaaaa
Take a deep breath, and slowly exhale. It's actually pretty tame compared to nose art on American WW2 bombers.
Who else War Thunder brought here?
why do these guys stay close to the ground when it looks like they have enough lift to take off
looking flrr that feeling of speed close to the ground STUPIDITY
waaaaa waaaaa
Beautiful !
A magnificent aircraft!!!!
