Over the more than forty years I've been driving, I've learned to calm down. It makes the journey so much more enjoyable. Who cares if someone overtakes me, or gets away from the lights before me? I don't. As long as I get to my destination safely, I'm happy. The road is not a race track, and driving isn't a competition.

Exactly Ashley, we’re doing it for safety and for best flow, you make a very good point, you have to know when the best time is to accelerate and get out of there or drop back and fit in behind, that’s why being staggered is so important, never be next to another vehicle and never arrive at the same time and at the same point as anyone else, either be in front or behind, the 2 drivers at the end of the video, 2 egos trying to feel good about themselves, it doesn’t matter who goes first, you’ll both arrive together at the next set of red lights, but honestly, the car driver should have noticed that the white van wanted to go first so he should of let him go ahead, both were driving terribly but the white van was way too close, he’s pretty much almost touching the back bumper of the car, I hope he got reported to the police, honestly it’s immature how they both acted but thankfully the van driver didn’t get out and beat up the car driver, a few years ago I was out on my bicycle cycling and the road narrows on both sides, I saw a car coming towards me so I slowed down and pulled over to make it easy for the car driver to get past me, he stops, winds down his window and he shouts at me “what the f**k do you think you’re going!?” which I replied “the road narrows so I pulled over to make it easy for you to get past, what do you think I’m doing?” and he jumps out of his van and I had to escape because he was going to beat me up, going through experiences like that change you and your life and no matter how tough you think you are it’s very scary as you could easily end up getting stabbed or shot these days, life lesson learnt, whenever you go out driving you will always see people doing crazy stupid things while driving, just let them get on with it, don’t react and don’t get involved no matter how tempting it is, by not reacting and by not saying anything you’re not sinking down to their level, you’re being the better man.

Had it an 1hr ago on the way home, horrible rain, traffic getting annoyed and impatient, I came off a motorway onto a roundabout into and straight into road works.
On the roundabout a BMW came acceleration through on the inside lane,
As we came off the roundabout he was Side by side with me on the bend [I was trying to keep a staggered formation but he came bombing through]
As the road straightened up you can see the road works and that his lane was closed.
The BMW gives a panic brake reaction and slows so that we are fully side by side and he then indicated to filter in.
I could see that he was agitated and impatient and his car body language suggested he might want to fight over road space,
so I immediately eased off and made a gap in front and let him in.
He was then full of happy thank-you’s hand waving for having being let in,
I cost me nothing in time because we were all in a slow moving queue, and he went away happy with a better demeanour because someone was nice to him.

Sometimes though we do make errors in judgement and helping fix problems over making them worse is always best for all. Also it's good to remember all drivers are not of the same level of experience or mindset. It's not just the car they drive.
A while ago my youngest brother needed a new car, so went down to his and drove him to view a few. He's not long past his test in his thirties.
I was telling him about staggering and not being alongside a car. When a car that was in the wrong lane in front just cut across into our exit lane. Few weeks ago I was in traffic at the same junction and the markings weren't clear The left lane goes off to the left. So I was in the wrong lane and had to move into left myself. I did it safely but it dawned on me then. The driver was like me not local and just didn't know but made a poor late decision. Where I am more experienced and make it a lot sooner.
      We are always still learning.

I'm guessing the reason the van driver was creeping is because he expected you to launch to get in front, and then slow to the speed limit. the question is whether that was from immediate experience, or just what he expects people to do to him. I know I just expect it of people. they will go up the hill at 10 MPH over the limit to get in front of me, and then descend on the brakes at 10 below, because downgrades are scary. and they will launch out of traffic lights to get ahead of me, and then slow to below the speed limit once I can't get around them.

I stopped but left a gap in front of me as there was a cyclist approaching behind, thinking he'd want to go ahead. He didn't so I crept forward and stopped just before the stop line. The car to my right must have thought I was planning on speeding off ahead so he started creeping forward beyond the stop line. When the lights eventually changed he sped off, I set off normally. He must have spent too much time looking back in his mirror to see where I was he drifted towards the central reservation clipping the kerb.

  • @jisoo1571
    @jisoo1571 23 дня назад +13

Personally I always employ that if I get in a merge lane then it’s my job to find a gap to merge. Usually I play “in front or behind”. At the lights I can usually judge whether a car is going to go somewhere or not so I’ll usually say “I’ll go behind them”. If the gap closes, I move onto the next gap. It’s not about getting in front but letting the ego go for safety. Sometimes people like to close those gaps (and sometimes people in the right don’t find a gap and just expect people to hold off for them).
Edit: and this is the same if I’m in the left lane, I’ll think “in front or behind?” If somebody is gonna get in front I won’t increase danger trying to race them, just manage my speed properly.

Had one earlier where someone was upset that not only did I slow down while cars were passing parked vehicles (slowed to avoid piling head on into the oncoming traffic) but also slowed as a tall van passed under a low arched bridge…again to avoid a head on collision
Turns out the likely trigger point was actually a minute prior to that when we was all behind a cyclists that was travelling just over 15 mph and I refused to overtake going oassed junctions and across solid white lines
What made it amusing for ne was all the gestures of go faster, I am in a hurry, was that we had to wait at two seperate crossings for pedestrians to cross, traffic through a local village and also red lights at temporary roadworks. For the minute behind the cyclist and a couple of slow down give ways, it delayed us by a couple of car lengths by the time we reached the red lights 🤷🏻‍♂️

For me, the biggest worry here is that the cammer almost certainly had no visibility of any traffic approaching from their right, which calls into question the decision to accelerate hard. Yes, I know that nothing _should_ be coming from the right, but that's nothing like the same as nothing _will_ be coming from the right. The risk of driving blindly into danger here is not nil. And whilst it's sometimes handy to use HGVs as "shields" (and vans to a lesser extent), the key when doing so is not to go ahead of them.

If they are slow, I will carefully go on ahead so that I am clearly in position in front of them and not beside them again, no drama. It's actually a pet peeve of mine when people crawl slowly through intersections, they are afterall an area of high risk and if you can't see past them, you would assume the road ahead is backed up and end up sitting back pointlessly to avoid blocking the intersection.
The van driver seemed like the only one trying to race and got mad when he lost. It looks like at the merge, it's the van's lane merging into the cammer's lane too - so the van had the duty to give way and knew it. One extra consideration to take into account with all this is, what sort of road lies ahead? For example, if it's a 20 mph stretch coming up after the lights,, accelerating to get ahead of the other vehicle, you may find yourself severely "revenge tailgated" by an angry driver who's wondering why you were quicker away from the lights but now "slow" after you got in front of them, even though all you are doing is correctly obeying a 20 mph limit that they themselves don't want to obey (though should).
Similarly, if you know you are going to be turning right soon after the road goes down to one lane in your direction, there may be little point in accelerating to get ahead, even if the other vehicle is relatively slow off the mark.
Driving is a bit like a game of chess. You have to think several moves ahead rather than carry out a single move in isolation just because it may seem a good idea at the time. Not saying that's what happened with Ashley and his pupil, just a general comment.

Lorry drivers (and car drivers) do it because, well who knows why other than they feel people are queue-jumping rather than "merge in turn".

One challenge with this is if the vehicle next to you starts to move off the line during the red and amber phase. However you can compensate for this by stopping slightly short of the stop line. By doing so, you can also start moving during the red and amber phase and get a bit of a "run up" as long as you don't actually cross the stop line before the light turns green. I noticed your pupil stopped a little before the stop line but not sure if that was to potentially employ the aforementioned technique.

Being from Wigan I know that bit of road, commonly we let the first in the right lane merge in followed by left lane as it turns into one lane.
The cammer was selfish and entitled racing to get ahead, the van driver let his anger get the best of him.
Both need to improve the standards of their driving

Looks like 6 of one and half a dozen of the other. There is nothing wrong in setting off and increasing ones acceleration abilities to get in front of another vehicle. Van drivers are particularly noted for their bad driving and aggression plus due to gearing differences some vans can out accelerate some cars ability.
In advanced driving or riding its sometimes advisable to out accelerate others and to take the lead when setting off at traffic lights as that apparently reduces danger from possible conflict and puts the danger behind one and not confrontational if being side by side or having someone pull in on you or brake on you whilst in front.

If we were to change the law so that it doesn't offer any protection to people who go out of their way to provoke/intimidate strangers, I bet we'd notice a sudden drop in road rage (and general public rage) incidents.

I can see why the van driver got agitated although it doesn't excuse his reaction. I've had it happen so many times that the car next to me does similar, breaks its neck to make sure they get in front at the merge point, then proceeds to drive 5 to 10 below the speed limit. It boils my piss.

It *is* funny when it is the other way round though....3.5 ton cage van full of refuse bags parked up in lane one (me) out dragging a swanky Audi, Beemer, Mini or a wannabe Kia driver..... Even better as I start in second gear too.

I must admit to being a little guilty of tailgating those who undertake but then slow back down a tiny bit, so i can see why the van driver was triggered, but he took it to a whole other extreme!

It isn’t just testosterone, it is any increase of any hormone creating an imbalance…I have seen a fair share of female drivers with a MGIF attitude (sorry for being pendantic this morning Ashley 😉)
It is an interesting point about holding back. Last week there was a driver behind me, not doing too much wrong apartvfrom giving the occasional gap close nudge to go faster. Already doing 30 in a 30…not going to go quicker. Anyway, reached some lights with a merge in turn like in the video and as we moved away I showed my intention of slotting in between two cars (with the previous vehicle being the rear of the two) but they accelerated. I throttled back and slotted in behind without issue
The old me from a few years ago would’ve competed for that space, screaming blue murder to the other driver about it being a merge in turn and holding myself and everyone else up in the process. Simply not worth it

Yep... had an interesting situation in a very highly modified sports car, a female driver in a Ford KA decided she wanted to keep up with us.... around sharp bends. It just ended up putting her in a ditch. We went back to make sure she was ok, her reason? "I can go just as fast as you". Speed is always a by product to going "fast", not the aim!

    • @smilerbob
      @smilerbob 23 дня назад +1

@thomaselliot2257 It _could_ be taken that way…but for clarity…
I wasn’t suggesting that the title was sexist given all parties involved are male and there can be the occasional “male bravado” or “alpha male” attitude in society and also on the road which is often linked to increased testosterone levels
My comment was more to do with dopamine and endorphine that gets released during times of excitement and danger. The heightened risk is a pleasure for some people and they will take risks on the road to get that buzz…almost like getting a drug hit (enter the reference to my comment being pedantic) 👍
In fact, my comment could be deemed as being sexist by indirectly implying females do not have testosterone. There is testosterone present in females, just a much lower level
So apologies to anyone that thought I was being sexist…I wasn’t at all

I assume the cammer was dawdling prior to arriving at the lights. The vans took the opportunity to get passed and the cammer put his foot down ... hence the point from the van driver. A favourite move of Uber drivers in IONIQs and Priuses

The point about accelerating safely is lost on far too many people. The 2 scenarios I see this the most would be people not accelerating enough on motorway slip roads and trying to merge at far too slow a speed or turning onto a road with a 50-60mph limit. If they actually accelerated hard then the danger of a collision is much lower.

I have a give way onto a dual carriageway that I occasionally use on my commute. The number of drivers who emerge and then use the next half a mile to get up to 60/65 is nuts. I now make sure the car in front is gone before I even begin to look to emerge. I've been caught out before emerging behind someone into a large gap only to be stuck behind as they dawdle up to the speed of everyone else.

I also noticed in both start offs, the white van straddled the white cross hatchings. Although legal in this case as the hatchings were bounded by broken lines, there was no reason for the van to do so.

I'm sure I'll be shot down here, but...
Many commenters here are attributing rapid acceleration to testosterone or aggression. Why? Sometimes, for some people, hoofing it from the lights is just a bit of fun. A well executed launch in a manual car can be quite satisfying, though one might question whether a wet crossroads is the ideal location.
So, if two such inclined drivers find themselves alongside each other at a set of lights and both accelerate hard, why is either deemed to be in the wrong? In this instance, the cammer cleared the junction first. Not that big a surprise, when the "opponent" is in a van. However, I see nothing in this to justify the van driver's subsequent tailgating. For me, the fault here lies with the van driver.
As for the cammer's speed, a quick measurement on Google Maps (3.2 m) and some frame counting (6.5 fr @ 30 fps) indicates that they were doing 33 mph through the pedestrian crossing after the hatched area, which is about the point where they eased up on acceleration (judging by engine note). They continued to accelerate a little, though, averaging nearly 37 mph through the bus stop (32.7 m in 60 frames).
