Why is “wajihillah” translated as Allah’s countenance and not Allah’s face? Is this not an ash’ari leaning translation? Genuinely curious
The well known translator from Ahlus-Sunnah, Muhsin Khan, translated “ وجه الله" (wajhi’llaah) as “Allaah’s countenance” in a number of verses.
To mention a few:
(2:272),
(30:38),
(30:39),
(76:09)
“Wajhullaah”/“Wajhillaah” is mentioned 5 times in the Qur’aan. 4 of these (above) have been translated as Allaah’s Countenance apart from 1,
(2:115)
“And to Allaah belong the East and the West, so wherever you turn yourselves or your faces there is the Face of Allaah”.
This Ayah mentions “fathamma wajhullaah” which means “...there is the Face of Allaah...”
All the other verses which translate ‘wajhullaah” as the ‘Countenace of Allaah’ refer to seeking and wanting the Countentance of Allaah:
“Yureedoona wajhullah”
“Ibtighaa’a wajhillaah”
“Tureedoona wajhallaah”
“Li-wajhillaah”
This is why we need to learn the Arabic language and not rely on translations. May Allaah aid us all upon this, Ameen.
Countenance means face, barakallahu feek
