  • In China's Forbidden City, the Emperor's private inner court was strictly for him alone. Other men like officials, soldiers, and even his male relatives had to leave by nightfall or face death if caught inside without permission. The only men allowed to stay were eunuchs, who were castrated and couldn't have children. They were trusted to guard the imperial harem and handle important tasks.
    Although the Forbidden City was built in the 15th century, the practice of castration and using eunuchs in China goes back much further. In ancient times, castration was a punishment but also a way to get a job in the imperial service. Eunuchs were seen as safe around the Emperor's private space and were tasked with protecting the Emperor's wives.
