@@shuttlespace04Britain could very likely design and build an attack 'copter - maybe even superior to the Apache. There has been instances of this in the past. However, two things usually get in the way: firstly the time frame, and secondly finances. The project more often than not starts to exceed the "in service" time and incurs vast cost overruns. The cherry on the cake is usually the lack of orders needed to make it financially viable because other countries would rather buy " the American one" (other countries may even be getting "leaned on" by the Americans to buy their's), so an order book of four to Oman and a provisional order of one to Ethiopia won't be enough to cut it. So eventually, having spent billions trying to bring it into service, the government will call time on it to cut their losses. The Americans will then take it over and end up selling the finished article back to us, and take all the kudos for it.

Even the A model had rescue attachments. The idea was that if one aircraft were to go down in a pair, a wounded guy could be placed in the gunner seat while the gunner attached himself to a ring on the outside. The other person in the downed Apache can be attached to another ring. Snipers work in pairs so they might be inserted or extracted that way. The down side, is the Apache can't use it's rockets or missiles because they could hurt those people when fired.

Same with most modern systems that even with way more people working on them they'd still take months or more to build.
This is why I'm a huge advocate for having a larger military so in the event of any large scale conflict we gave at least a good amount of systems in service in the first place.

@@Hereford1642I understand where you are coming from but have to point out that the Ministry of Defence only has a finite budget. Like I mentioned in my other comment, we have multiple types of helicopters in service. The Apache fits the role perfectly and seems pointless to attempt to build a competitor model. As for your comment about aspiring youth, let me point out that all the Apache helicopters are maintained and serviced by British service personnel, as I briefly considered being an aircraft technician in the British Army when the Apache's were first brought into service. I'm pretty sure that British talent is involved in the design of the new Apache as it holds a lot of our technology, in the same way that the Japanese involvement in the Tempest program, will see the Japanese add their own technology to their versions of Tempest. Trust me, there are no shortage of vacancies for suitably trained young British designers within the countless British Military suppliers.
