I had one of these. The rear quarter windows followed the body line, less square, they had plastic louvres' that covered the glass, no trim. It also had a factory T-top. It was a '79 and was a 'Duster" edition, mainly rear graphics and the louvres. Same 318 lean burn system. It was one of the sunfire colors, brown with gold. I put on fiberglass fenders and swapped a 360 into it. Loved that car. This was a Canadian car. I dated a Karen to get my hands on this car back in the day. At 10 minutes I see why the rear quarter window looks wrong. It's a grafted in piece. Mine had the same dent behind the passenger side door.

With the fuel line going from tank, across the roof, down the A pillar....then through the marker light hole, that car could be in Mad Max. If it were a Dodge Aspen, it could be called the Mad Maxpen. But it's a Volare... Great video, and glad you made it back safely! I know a lot of people are not fans of Mopar, but it's good to see one back on the road. Those 318's are good motors. My first car was a 67 Dart GT with a 318. Dad helped me rebuild the motor when I was 15 years old. As soon as I turned 16, I got my license and already had my car waiting for me. I then proceeded to pull the stock 2 bbl, cam and lifters and put on a 4 BBL and solid lifter cam. It was a screamer! So much that it destroyed the 904 transmission within 6 months. So I got a 727 out of a junk yard and put that in the car. Anyhoosier....keep them coming, Buff!

I have an 87 Dodge Diplomat with the 5.2 in it as well, and it's pretty much the predecessor to the Aspen and Volare. Can't really, dog on a 318, especially if the lean burn is working, which is very rare because they did more harm than good. It has the old low torque starter and reminds me of the ones my dad had. My dad got me into Mopars with a 1977 Dodge d100 with a junkyard build distributor that hardly ever worked, but it was what got me into Mopar. I'm glad to see an ole F body being saved from the dead and how nice that one is because Aspens and Volares were bad about rusting in the front upper fenders. I'm glad that one is solid. Can't wait to see what you got planned for it.

In my teenage years I found an old '77 Aspen setting at a used car lot with a blew up 318. It was a dark red with a crank back moon roof, it too had the vynol top at the back of the roof by them tiny windows. The price tag was $125. I was painting houses and also doing work for my buddy John he had a salvage yard with a granny low 4spd Chevy tow truck. So I bought it and found an ol' duster without a title for $75 used that tow rig to pull the engine & trans out the duster slapped it in the Aspen along with the headers attached to the engine. It run good but was super loud, a cop magnet with open headers. I found a exhaust shop that put the duals on it for me but I couldn't afford the mufflers it made it quieted down on the inside of the car but it would pop flames out the back on deceleration. Still wouldn't pass inspection, I ended up blowing that one up too. I traded it to John along with a little cash to boot for a super six \6 Volare that was a great car it had a 727 trans too. I went through a ton of rear ends in that car but that leaning tower of power showed a many chevy v8s the tailights. It would piss them off even more afterwards I would act like something was wrong after the race most times they would come up while I was opening the hood I'd ask em you know why you lost? Why? What does that say on that breather lid? SUPER SIX 😅

I love these F bodies. I worked on them and owned some of them Super Sixs. They really run great like a small v8. Had a Carter BBD 2 barrel and bigger exhaust system for breathing. The weak spot is the 7 1/4 rear spider gears. They are garbage. Get a an 8 1/4 rear out of a Rear drive Fury or Diplomat body that you got the radiator from.

I found one of these at a farmers house but it was the Blue Richard Petty race pack car withe the 360 cid in it and had the Petty numbers you could put on it with stock car racing hold down straps on the windows front and back and fender flares with louvers on the side windows. Never could get him to sell it. Ut, then one day it was gone.

Those were Dodge Aspens here also. Most were 4 door with slant six. Advertised as amerikan luxury. And it was a big car, compared to Fiat 127, Toyota Corolla or what people used to drive. Aspen wagon, with modern hemi, uprated suspension, brakes and interior could be nice.

i would say the reason for not much power going up hill is the fact there's 15 miles of fuel line going up hill over a car to get to the engine. that mechanical pump worked its ass of. lol, good video i love the junk yard there. to bad you couldn't have grabbed a ignition switch of the fifth Ave you got the radiator from, any way you cant beet the desert cars as far as rust goes looks like its in good shape. are you going to sell or fix it, it would make for some good videos fixing it up. it would look awesome with some paint and maybe a 6.4 hemi. the grills though I've always kind of thought there has to be a way to make them look cooler. 318 cant really kill them
