    Man, my office used to be in the basement of an old 1950's court house here in the states, and the amount of weird stuff I'd hear working overnights, boots on tile steps, keys jingling, furniture moving around when there's no-one else in the building. I can only imagine what that place is like on a quiet night. So cool to watch!

    looking at those roof cavities, with that fluffy insulation. Would probably be best to replace all that with more modern insulators and then board it over the top to add a little extra, and also add more storage space and not have to worry about falling through the ceiling below.

    I was curious about the label "Grosse etoffe". Google translate said it meant "big fabric" but a native French speaker friend clarified it meant "thick fabrics". So the boxes of linen scattered about would be consistent with thick or heavy fabrics in storage. I also wonder if maybe the portioned off space was used as a bedroom or even a hospital room depending on what was going on in the community at any given time. The picture of Christ on the cross was a nice one, not a simple label for storage. It was meant for contemplation or an aid to prayer. Also it looks like there was an old fashioned nightgown hanging on a nail or hook in the corner of the partitioned off space.

      I translated Grosse etoffe from German and I got "Big Things." In English "stuff" is also used to describe a fabric. Maybe it was a place for storing bed linens.
      It reminded me of the saying "from litte things, big things grow."
      It also reminded me of those motivational room decor-things you can get at the dollar store.

      Grosses etoffes are big cloths, so that would cover anything from table cloths for trestle tables to cloths used to cover and preserve furniture when a room was not being used.

    Another wonderful video! That staircase is amazing, and goes all the way up to the attics, I wonder who paid for all of that. I have come across some old photos of the convent and hospital online. It seems that Sadie apartment was an add on..u can see that the present wall with the gate is not symmetrical and to me has always looked off.. the front wall,of ‘Sadie’s apartment is the left side of the original gate. Can’t wait to see what you have found in the way of iron gates. I have found census record for the town of Ernee, a census was taken every 5 years, they date from 1836 to 1936. The names of the people who lived there are listed and what their jobs were. All very interesting and I have been down a few rabbit holes of religious history and the history of hospitals inFrance.

    The linen fabric you found probably was used by the nuns to make their habits , as well as altar cloths for the 💒 ALSO since it was a hospital long ago
    Bed sheets and bandages. The rope lines in the attic may gave been to dry bandages in the winter since the lines were not very high from floor. We are used to disposable bandages but they could not afford all that linen. They would have boiled the diety linens. Also as women they needed sanitary napkins which women made from old bed linens and they were washed also 8n boiling hot water but to dry them...they would have been discreet.

    I think those funnels were used as weights, probably for holding down scenery pieces or props for ceremonies and events etc. They're portable and heavy, and the context (coloured paper and fabric) supports the idea that this is where they stored such material.

I wish I was a professional ghost hunter, because I would LOVE to spend a few nights there and ghost hunt, hahahaha. I hope you're wearing a mask when you're in the attic. As for the footsteps you're hearing and other things, maybe you could get the convent saged to get rid of anything negative.

    • @babawali3021
      @babawali3021 2 года назад +3

      Saged? No, I think perhaps a blessing by a local parish priest would be more appropriate, with a small donation to the church for this short traditional ceremony. A few spoken prayers by the priest, plus his (optional?) sprinkling with holy water, should do the trick! 🙏🙏 When I was a child, a parish priest came to our new home for a house blessing, which was common at the time but not so much now (depends on local and/or one's family custom).

    Absolutely fascinating stuff. The staircase is beautiful. I can see some osmo coming its' way in the future. Pau is a long way for you to drive. It is a beautiful city and full of history. You may want to plan a day or so there for the vlog. It is where Napoleon used to go on holiday, so it should be worth the trip. I wonder if those ropes in the attic were for drying personal items. Can't have the nuns underwear on a washing line in full view! The convent does have a creepy feel to it, but it is very old, so lots of creaking wood. Good luck.

    Those funnel looking things... They look like the items that you would put on windowsills or up on the ridge line of the roof to keep birds from roosting or nesting on there. I live in the United States in the state of Pennsylvania and I worked across the street from our state capital. My job took me into the capital rather regularly. They had those on all the exterior windowsills and at different points along the roof where they had issues of pigeons roosting.

    those metal cones with the spikes are most likely lightning rods for on the roof. at some point they might have been replaced with more modern ones.

    • @twobluestripes
      @twobluestripes 2 года назад +2

      I was also thinking they looked like little spire toppers or finials. Maybe the few with extra spikes were to keep birds off?

    Fabric, that the is what the sign says and the items that look like funnels I would say are bases for flower arrangements. A block of foam used on the spikes then flowers stuck into that.

    ATTIC: It would not have been uncommon to use that enclosed attic space as temporary traveler, or worker, or servants quarters, or to house a girl hiding her pregnancy while under the care of the convent until she birthed and gave the child up for adoption, or even 'punishment' by separation for someone who had 'misbehaved'. During periods of persecution individuals could have been hidden there. In the case of the Convent every one of those, if not all of them, are reasonable expectations.

    • @jkcarroll
      @jkcarroll 2 года назад +9

      Not necessarily "punishment". It's possible that a nun could have used that as a brief hermitage -- a place to separate herself not just from the world but from the community as a whole in order to immerse herself more deeply in the Passion of Christ. It would have been a spiritual discipline, maybe even as something done by a novice before taking her final vows to joint the order.

    • @TheNaturalLawInstitute
      @TheNaturalLawInstitute 2 года назад +8

      @@jkcarroll Yes, I should have added that to the list of possibilties. My point being that there are a lot of reasons why the attic would contain a sleeping space for someone who wanted a bit of isolation, or the community wished to be isolated from, or the community wished to isolate from others outside of it.

    • @ce1581
      @ce1581 2 года назад +8

      I was thinking of punishment rooms also. So sad but definitely true girls could have been hidden away during pregnancy in awful places like that. ❣️

    • @TheNaturalLawInstitute
      @TheNaturalLawInstitute 2 года назад +6

      @@ce1581 Just for yuks: I do a little recreational research for people because I wrote one of the first skip-tracing systems, and am pretty up to date on the geneology apps. Pattern: If a person is hard to find it means there was a 'loose woman' or criminal man in the tree somewhere. Almost every time. I've started to warn people that 'if someone is that hard to find there is a reason they didn't leave the same records responsible people do." ;)

    • @ce1581
      @ce1581 2 года назад +7

      @@TheNaturalLawInstitute I agree , genealogy is not all rainbows and roses. My husband has some interesting history being related to Jesse James. People think that's so romantic and exciting. But as the family progressed they also had to survive the Great depression and war rationing which led to some very cold cruel hard hearts. My husband is 74 and I've heard stories of how violent and hard his mother was and his dad's brother was so hated in his community that he was a hermit til somehow the sheriff went to check on him found him dead and took him to the mortuary and the mortician identified him and refused to deal with his body because of an ancient family feud. All the surviving family ,my in-laws n husband have really horrific stories of survival. Like another uncle that hunted n trapped during the depression . He would take squirrels n rabbits to Louisville KY and sell them to city people. If he didn't kill enough to make the money he needed ? He would kill the barn cats skin n dress them and the city people thought they were buying rabbits. Of course if your starving it doesn't really matter. But some history is pretty darn harsh.
