    I Surrender dear (Irene) is the this message from me to you , and also the title of number 4 on one of my most loved CD´s : Thelonious Monks most wonderful CD's "Brilliant corners from 1956. I hope you know it or maybe even own it like me. Its wonderful with Ba-lue Bolivar, Pannanonica and Bemsha Swing upon it, and a very,very fine group with a.o. Sonny Rollins, Max Roach and Oscar Pettiford. I was with my teacher in Physics (and Jazz!) and two others from the Gymnasium in Copenhagen.
    It war a very very joyful concert with Monk playing the piano AND WALKING AROUND IT !! until he should play again, when he sat down again , and he miraculously played the right accord On THE Precis right time ! That`s what I call a MASTER !!
    I`m so happy that I found that record in my collection again !! Thanks to you my dear Irene, for your beautiful singing "Pannonica on your latest (?) record made me remembering the little beautiful song on the little beautiful butterfly. I simple love that Monk-composition so much !
    with love and smile
    yours forever, whatever there will happen !!

      @@itdepends604 Hi,
      On the album it is written Blue Monk but it's a mistake as I said at the end of my comment.
      You can compare these two songs :
      - Blue Monk : ruclips.net/video/_40V2lcxM7k/видео.html
      - Balue Bolívar Balues Are : ruclips.net/video/CTijrDIU-m4/видео.html
      Mistakes on the tracklist happens sometimes.
      I bought this album long time ago and I noticed it because I know how sound his compositions, the chords etc.

      No it is not. It is typical of the recordings of that era. The ampex company was making some of the finest recorders ever made even before this recording was made. Telefunken was making some incredible mics still in use today. And more important...sound engineers knew how to make natural sounding recordings....something lost today. I’m not surprised at all how good this sounds.

    One thing I noticed a lot in Monk's 60's recordings: either Monk wasn't too impressed with his drummer's solos, or he didn't care for drum solos AT ALL....or...his 60's drummer's, no matter that they WERE ACTUALLY GOOD...they didn't pick up on Monk's subtle hint, and they wanted to say TOO MUCH IN THEIR CLOSING SOLO, and COULD NOT come back into the song CLEANLY. That's a hallmark for a drummer in Jazz Music, right? There are many instances out there where Monk and his drummer's solos DONT COME TOGETHER TO END THE SONG. It's there. Surprising and unnerving, too!

    • @doIlookhi
      @doIlookhi 4 года назад +3

      He seemed to like Frankie Dunlop though. Monk lets him stretch in this recording a few times. Nice reentries too.

    • @djevelkjokken204

      I'm with Monk then on not caring for drum solos. On some of his recordings I've listened to on RUclips he allows an awful lot of them. Nothing against drummers, but I can do without the solos. Don't get me started on vibes, tho...

    • @callmemonkh9020
      @callmemonkh9020 4 года назад +2

      @@djevelkjokken204 the interesting or peculiar thing is...#1, I believe Monk DID respect good drummers, because of course, ArtBlakey was a favorite, and a friend. #2: his drummers -- through the end of his CBS contract in December'68 -- never had a setup beyond a 'Bebop Trap-set:' kick drum and snare / one, possibly two crash cymbals and hi-hat / and probably a floor tom-tom. NEVER any additional tom's (two?) to add extra color that I know of.
      I know Monk was a very intelligent and stoic individual. They say he had a "phlegmatic personality." He needed to b prodded, or stimulated to push thru, or take up initially, certain things. I wish there was someone, or, there could've been someone to suggest to him seriously to re-shape, re-tool or just add to, the performance of music in his repotoire, to make it fresh. There was TOO MUCH going on in music in the late 60's! Monk SHOULD'VE HAD A LARGER SLICE OF IT ALL, just like Miles got some. Miles re-shaped himself; but he NEVER LOST himself. Monk could've enjoyed this newness also.

    • @wstr9963
      @wstr9963 4 года назад +2

      Monk once made a list of tips for playing a gig. On the list were tips such as: "Pat your foot and sing the melody in your head when you play", "Stop playing all that bullshit, those weird notes, play the melody!", and also "Make the drummer sound good".

    • @jthepear
      @jthepear 3 года назад +1

      @@callmemonkh9020 Have you read "The Life and Times of Thelonious Monk"? Excellent book. It explains a lot about why what you're suggesting didn't necessarily happen. But at the end of the day, the world was and is so enriched by Monk that it seems a trifle selfish to ask more from this singular genius of 20th century music.
