What in the actual hell is that thing you demonstrated? You're standing there stiff-legged, barely even hinging. This is an arm excercise you did. Do you even feel your glutes when you "swing" like this?
You ever meet old guys that served in the military and notice that most if not all of them are a mess physically? Bad knees, shoulders, hips, back… That’s because US military physical training is and has been very abusive and not very effective. And it’s improved very little over the years and this includes the elite units. So whatever “experts” they hire have either not made an impact or are not the experts you would think they are. Most of the time they are hired to consult or teach a workshop at best and to land that it’s really more about WHO you know and brand recognition than WHAT you know. Strongfirst and CrossFit have made inroads with the military community and I’d say it’s resulted in a net improvement in how they train, but that’s also not saying much at all, because the training is still not sustainable, no focus on mobility, recovery, limited exercise selection, arbitrary standards and time constraints, unnecessary volume, I could go on. I almost never meet soldiers who can even squat to depth, touch their toes, or lock their elbows out overhead. So I would not hold working with then military as a measure of one’s expertise. Pavel makes himself scarce because his body is also broken from training the very way his system teaches.
So I think Technique can be split into two areas, one where "you will hurt yourself very quickly if you don't do this and that" and two " it will hinder your ability to go up in weight and volume because you are not being efficient" I gave up kettlebells because I did not understand the first part and was too overwhelmed by second. I hurt my lower back because I was squeezing my lower back at the top, not my glutes. Once I Figured that out I was able to keep training and perfecting my swing each time.
I understand what some of the commenters are saying, and I do believe that there is some validity to their points. However, I also believe that exercise science is something that continues to change, with both research and personal experience of many practitioners. I respect and appreciate your point of view. What I finally get my first kettlebell at the end of the year, I'm definitely going to refer to this video. Don't get me wrong, I for sure will be purchasing Enter the Kettlebell. But please 🙏 don't be discouraged and please don't take down this video. Much respect for your courage to post a differing perspective. I appreciate it. And for taking the time to prepare this video for us.
Im not an expert with kettlebells, only went to courses regularly for around a year or so a few times a week, but one thing that taught me the most about correct execution of the movements was a heavy enough q kettlebell. Sure a heavy one has a good possobility of causing an injury, but it's really hard to incorrectly swing or snatch a heavy kettlebell. For Turkish getups it's even more prevalent; it's a rather complicated move, but once you have heavy enough of a challenge you can't lift it up unless you position yourself under it at all times. Great content btw and quite daring to challenge Pavel on kettlebells. First up I was like what is this guy doing, but when I saw Pavel's example it was quite obvious the hips looked really locked.
It is easy to criticise some old videos. Have you always been perfect, right away from the very beginning? I think you just use Pavel's name to create attention to your advertising. That's not fair. It is no good practice either to criticise a two-handed swing and demonstrate a hand-to-hand-swing instead. For a really good example of good technique and good coaching instead of criticising bad examples you should have mentioned the younger videos of Mark Wildman. But you might loose clicks if you do.
I've been very vocal about my own mistakes as well on this channel. If you listen to my video, I'm saying it's my "preferred" way of swinging, and while the difference between H2H and DH is there, it's rather minor.
Best advise I ever received for hard style kettlebell swings was on the down swing was punch your butt backwards. Literally learned to punch a heavy bad with my butt. Definitely has self defense applications.
The difference between the two swing styles demonstrated in the video is clear. The swing performed by Pavel is more focused on generating muscular power, while the second swing demonstrated is more focused on endurance. There are some studies demonstrating and exemplifying both, but unfortunately there is nothing very concrete yet. However, analysing both exercises mechanically, I see no problem in performing them, and even if it were the case that the person felt back pain when performing the superstiffness, this would mean that the trainer prescribed the swing exercise incorrectly, and not that the swing style performed is wrong. The video is cool, but in the next one it would be good to supplement it with scientific studies, thus avoiding discussions that lead nowhere.
@lebestark-official the girl in the video is kelly matthews. i'd be curious as to what you think of her form when swinging? too much of a squat? keep up the great work!
Why would you compare a 2 Handed KB Swing with a Hand to Hand Swing? I mean, maaayyyybbbbeee comparing a single arm swing to hand to hand, but still, they're all separate movements. 2-Hand, Single Arm, and Hand to Hand Swing are all separate movements. I think the third reason you made this video was for views. So I'm sure you wont be mad about a controversial comment 🤣
Pavel Tsatsouline he was showing how not do it , not other way around , I have seen his videos he is the best , and he also shows how to breath in btw ,
I'm not sure if your kettlebell is too heavy and you are compensating by moving your body or what, I'm not sure what's going on. Your feet are not grounded at all and it looks 'uncollected'. I've been googling why feet are important and there's a lot about it, but mostly it's about the importance of being grounded and solid. Your whole body seems to be wiggling when you are alternating hands and it looks like you are in jeopardy of pulling a muscle at some point. Be careful. It feels like I'm watching someone do pushups where their back does the 's' worm thing instead of looking like a plank. Just be careful.
A wonderful ending and words about technique, coach - I share your opinion that as long as training is safe, perfect technique is not that important, because people are different and move differently, have different body dysfunctions, etc. On the other hand, Scott Sonnon claims that technique is the most important because even if we exercise 80% well and 20% of the time we have a loss in technique, as much as 20% compensation occurs, which may result in injury. The golden mean - and that's it!
Pavel single-handedly popularized kettlebell training in USA. His teachings aren’t wrong. They are different from other schools of thought. Pick one you like or works best for you. If you do end up doing single handed swing. Make sure you do THAT correctly. Lots of problems can be had if that’s wrong

@@diaryofnricom163 I just watched the video that swing clip is taking from. Pavel was demo'ing a swing. He didn't preface it by saying _This is a common mistake so don't do this._ There was no disclaimer like that- not before or after.
@@utubepunk Thanks. I watched the one that was posted 10 years ago. I noticed one comment from a user. Maybe this is really Pavel's old style and he changed later ? I don't know really. @Sam-vk8xd 5 years ago This is Pavel’s old style. If you read his newer books or watch videos he did after this he’s refined the technique. That says something about Pavel. Many trainers and coaches don’t want to change their styles and just keep doing the same thing. Pavel chooses to improve and teaches the improved style every time.
The cue that helped me get a form that didn't hurt was, "the bottom position should look like a stiff leg deadlift and the top should look like a front delt raise." That means soft knees, (not bent like a squat), hips hinged back far enough to feel the glutes and hamstrings engage, spine straight, and then at the top the hand should be between the sternum and shoulder. Alternatively, a standing long jump with less knee bend.
I love how people crap on sport but sport has been practiced for longer than pavels style. I appreciate Pavel, but his way is not the only right way. Both styles have their place. It depends on what the individuals goal is. I absolutely love hardstyle, but I learned that sport is actually harder to learn. Too many people are seriously muscle confused and so for the majority of the population, it's easier to say "be stiff" all the time than teach someone how to safely relax and explode under load.
Stupid question here, as I've seen swinging you in several videos (I like your content btw!): Is there a reason why you're lifting the opposite foot slightly when doing the one arm swings? I'm starting my KB training and for now I've always been focusing on a solid stance with both feet always attached to the ground, but I'm wondering if this more flow-like style might go in the same direction like the russian pendulum that you've described in one of your videos about 2-handed swings? Thx!
Great video! You should collaborate with him. Look at Pavel’s body, long legs vs his upper body, that affects much of his technique? As a tall guy widening my legs enabled me to squat so much better.
Do you REALLY? have to do the explosive exhaling at the end of the swing? My partners and o have done it with and without for long periods of time and can't tell any difference. It seems to just be something that people do because that's what Pavel recommended and demanded. Maybe im wrong
I started in the dark ages of the Russian kettlebell Challenge. Everything was really simple and still would work if you never picked up another kbell book. The swing was simple pick up the bell hinge and press thru with hips. Then enter the kettlebell came out, and all these new techniques arrived, but were not too radical, they just fine tuned some things. This is where the dumb sumo squat to the bell came from. Kinda overkill, but it’s good for fragile people or swinging 48kg. Then Strong First arrived. The swing became a thing for constipated people. The demonstrations are right, but definitely to anxiety ridden for long sets. There are some things that I appreciate from GS. Like a relaxed clean. Why on earth must a clean be “hard style”? Anyways, train and be safe. Progress according to your goals and Pavels opinion certainly is not the absolute authority on kbells.
