Back in 2003 I moved to Seattle from Ohio. I was young, missed home, and sent Coach Tressel an email out of the blue to just say thanks for doing such a great job as a coach, and especially doing it with a bunch of Ohio guys. He actually replied to a random fan email. That meant a lot even if it wasn't much. Will always be THE Coach of the Bucks for me.
I introduced Coach Tress to my grandfather at the OHIO STATE HS Football Coaches Show. I told him how he had been a Buckeye fan since 1930 and he sat and talked to him for like 30 minutes. After that day, everytime Coach Tress saw me he asked how George was doing! The fact that he remembered his name and genuinely cared about him moved me to near tears!
I was visiting my dad in FL in March of 2008. I ran ahead to get our luggage and the car seat for my 3 month old son who was with my wife. She had an issue with the 1 touch open stroller. He was on the plane, I had no idea, he stopped held my son while she opened the stroller! He is one of best and nicest people you could ever meet!
Salty azz Cryami fans! They conveniently forget about all the crap call against OSU throughout the game! Cryami hasn't been the same since! Hahahahahahaha
I met Jim Tressel when I was a freshman at Ohio state , had a short convo and he asked my major and I said I wanted to be a lawyer , met him again the summer before my senior year of college and he stuck his hand out and said “how’s the law school search going , Adam?” I was stunned . Class act
So cool. I met him when he worked at U of Akron and he treated me the same way. I never got to see him again though! Such a humble and sharp human being
I was fortunate enough to have played my college football career under Tressel, & Dantonio. That story would be completely accurate, he had a tremendous memory of remembering people. We as players each yr during camp had to take a test to remember every one associated w the program, name, where they are from, and high school. A great human.
Amen, brother. Best mentor I’ve ever seen at OSU in my lifetime. He was the father figure a lot of these players never had. He had the incredible gift of not only being a mentor, but brought the best out of players for wanting to make him proud.
Gruden’s love for football is unmatched. Whether he’s breaking down the art of punting or the OSU vs. Michigan rivalry, the guy is laser-focused and absolutely lives for the game.
Amen….the league isn’t the same without him. Being from Dayton, Oh…I used to watch him play with the stadium only being 5min from my childhood home. We NEVER thought he’d become what he did. It’s been fun watching his career.
This interview was too short. Coach Tressel is a man I can listen to for hours. In fact, I have! He's one of very few people that can have me took forward to driving up to main campus, and sit at The WHAC in the butt rack of dawn, to be reminded of Macte Virtute! You're still awesome, after all these years, Coach Tress!
Early Gruden subscriber here. This got me excited. Great interview. He should focus on interviewing old coaches and former players. This is good good stuff man.
…and that taught ALL us fans that, NO ONE is irreplaceable, when that time comes. There’s a “nobody” out there who noone has heard of, that will be the next legend.
Gruden got a raw deal! A total hit job. His passion and rabid desire for football is unmatched! Hes a Buckeye! As a member of a family from Sandusky and a student at Huron High I bet John G ate at my family’s famous Berardi French Fry stand at Cedar Point and Berardis Family Kitchen in Sandusky!
@kinch613 You could certainly say the same about Tressel, given the truly trivial things he got dinged over. You look at where college football was within a year or two later in terms of players profiting off their autographs and such, look at the Stalions thing and you can only laugh at the way his tenure ended. Not that I was particularly bummed about his exit. He had a great run.
Tressell is my guy! I loved Coach Tress. I was in college at Wright State in 2002 when the Buckeyes made it to The Fiesta Bowl and played for the Natty I was there. Always been a Buckeye fan.
Tressel giving us an undefeated national title is still crazy to think about. Against arguably the best team to ever touch the field in college football in terms of NFL talent.
Little known fact. Back after Coop left OSU, the fans were in an absolute FRENZY because Jon Gruden was spotted in the Columbus airport during the coaching search. Then, we ended up going with an unknown division 2 coach? Well, I guess it worked out alright for both parties! Love seeing these 2 guys sitting together. And I love that Jon always looks like he is 2 seconds away from jumping out of his chair and eating someone! No idea if he ever actually interviewed for the job, or if it was circumstance.
Yeah I remember that. There was A LOT of buzz from the media at that time about Gruden being in serious consideration for the job. I love Gruden, but we definitely chose the right guy! I'm proud to say that my 13-year-old self wanted Tressel the whole way, as soon as I heard that he was a candidate....I heard about those 5 national titles he won with Youngstown State, and I said hire THAT guy!! Lol, I didn't care what division it was. Football is football. If you can coach, you can coach. I was also at that basketball game where he gave his intro speech and told us about how proud we were going to be of our team in 310 days in Ann Arbor, Michigan.....I remember watching Tressel and the team make good on that promise in The Game that year....I was at the season opener the following season when Maurice Clarett introduced himself to the nation by rushing for 175 yards in a big victory over Texas Tech and Kliff Kingsbury (their QB and Heisman candidate, at the time)....then I was also at the Michigan game that year, to see us beat them (AGAIN), and clinch a spot in the BCS national championship.....man, a lot of good memories!! Love coach Tress! Got to meet him also in 2006, he's a great guy!
When I was a young man my parents took me to the Buckeyes hall of fame cafe on Olentangy River Rd. Coach Tressel was there having dinner with his wife. I felt bad interrupting his dinner but I knew I only had one chance, and I approached his booth and asked for an autograph on a napkin. It's been 25 years I still have that napkin. Coach Tressel was the nicest guy to this young buckeye fan!
My granddaughter graduated from Youngstown state. And my daughter her husband and my granddaughter got a chance to meet Jim Tressel he was the president at that University at the time. I had a chance to go and watch her graduate and could have met him as well. But my health was not with me and allowing me to. I would have loved to have shook his hand and thank them for beating Michigan those years he did. And it's good to see Jon Gruden back in the Limelight
I once heard an interview with Tres where he talked about his 1st year as OC at Syracuse. He said he called an off tackle play that gained 8 yards. Called the same play, they got 12 yards, called it again, they got 9... said the HC asked him, hey coach, you got any other plays? Tres responded, "Yeah and I'll call them when they figure out how to stop this one". Way too many coaches today outcoach themselves. It's like they HAVE to do something different. If I have a play you can't stop, I will run it to death!
I grew up at the tail end of the Cooper era and all of the Tressell era, Tressell has always been my favorite OSU coach and probably always will be, he had a different mind and could get much much more out of his players that even they knew they were capable of, he also played that tough defensive and run it down your throat style of ball that the B1G used to be well known for. I honestly believe he could still coach right now, if his health could stand it.
One could say many great things about JT, but what I respected the most about him was how he cleaned things up at OSU. Before him, OSU players routinely filled up the police blotters. He pretty much shut that down. Also, he made me appreciate "Tressel ball". I hated it but learned to understand it.
I really love this interview. My two favorite teams in 2002 was Ohio state on the collage level and Tampa Bay Buccaneers and both of these dudes are my heroes that year

How long has this been a podcast and why im i just not w finding out about it!?! Good ole sweater vess tress!! Miss you coach Edit: also, nice touch with the Youngstown and OSU logos on the vest
Only 17 minutes is criminal. I could listen to these two talk ball for hours.
Seriously!
Ong
Ong. Such dynamic personalities
Agreed
Yeah but I don’t think Gruden is really the kind of guy to do a 3 hour interview. Doesn’t really have the demeanor for it

Jim is my number 1 OHIO STATE COACH,
