    Hello, I am a new XC90 owner (2020) do you know if there is an "idiot light" to let me know when to change the oil? And 7k or 10k miles? I thought it was very odd it doesn't have a dipstick.

      No dip stick. BMW, VW, Audi, Volvo and Mercedes no longer have a dip stick and the oil level is monitored for you by the computer. You have a Service Reminder message, but that is generic and is not specifically for oil.
      For all new Volvo gasoline engine cars manufactured after 2016, the maximum time and distance for oil service is once a year or 10,000 miles. Also, the oil specified is very specific to Volvo and Do It Yourselfers need to know about the specifications and not just the weight, i.e., 0W-20, RBS0-2AE.
      If you see VCC that just means Volvo Car Company.
      Under the hood your car might say 5W-20 but that has been changed to 0W-20 and your dealer will know that.
      In the center console, with the car on, and the engine off, the engine oil level is displayed under Service.
      There are two warnings;
      Oil Level Low which is a yellow information warning, displayed when the level falls down about a quart, less than two liters and the
      Oil Pressure Low, the red light that no one should ever see. That warning is a death certificate for the engine and the Low Level warning resembles the low pressure red light warning and is sometimes confused as the danger, stop engine immediately, warning.
      Finally, resetting the Service Time. The service time is reset after the oil is changed and I made a video on that. Be sure to see the correct one as I have done older cars and they reset differently. The service time should be displayed in the lower left hand corner of your center display. I think for your car, the time and milage is less and one year and 10,000 miles but, be sure to use the correct weight and type which is more important.
      These 4 cylinder engines are extremally sensitive and please do not discount the reasoning behind using the 0W-20, RBS0-2AE specifications. BMW had timing chain failures before they set the Longlife-17FE specifications to their oil.
      The three brands that make Volvo 0W-20, RBS0-2AE specified oil are Castrol Edge Professional, Liqui Moly Special Tec, and Moble1 but I have only seen Moble1 with the RBS0-2AE specification in Europe and have not seen Moble1 RBS0-2AE in the U.S.
      Good luck and if you depend on a shop to do the work I hope you have a good Volvo dealer near you as I have yet to find an independent shop that knows about Volvo, BMW, and VW 4 cylinder engine specifications. Everyone only talks about engine oil weight and most know nothing about the specifications.
      The Volvo dealer's Service Centers have become better and should be competitive in price. They should not try to trick you into buying something that you do not need. Do not, under any circumstances, go to a quick lube place, you know the ones I mean, please do not do that to yourself, not to mention your car.
      I learned to work on cars myself because I did not like or trust dealerships and now I am recommending Volvo Dealerships. Strange world indeed.

    Does a 2005 XC90 V8 have a dipstick or not?

    • @A_Renaissance_Man
      @A_Renaissance_Man  7 месяцев назад

      Yes, 2005 has a dip stick.
      The Dip Stick went away on the 2.0L 4-cylinder engines.

      Hello, I am near Lynchburg. I misspent my youth in Tidewater (HaHa) and graduated from Norview High School and Old Dominion University.
      Since you do not have an early V8 the issue could be in several locations; oil pan, front engine cover (a.k.a. timing cover), or from the power steering. I lost a PS hose one time and that was a fun, leaky, drive to the shop. I did not fix that one myself. PS fluid is actually red transmission fluid but that becomes black in color quite quickly.
      One thing I have done, is to have the shop find the issue and then decide whether or not to fix it yourself. Sometimes diagnostics is free but 1/2 hour of $hop time can save you hours upon hours of hunting something down or throwing the wrong part$ at the problem.
      Good Luck, I am sure there are good mechanics in Tidewater, the issue is more of finding them.

      Starter Ouch.
      I changed the starter on this beast.
      I thought I did a video but, the work was so intense I might have just done the work without the video camera running.
