Love your channel! Really awesome content every time! Sorry that you had a bad time with this clutch. Question: Would it be worth hanging onto the one that did hatch because it had a strong egg that survived even in poor conditions? Or do you think this was "luck of the draw"? I find the genetics stuff you do and especially with breeding for health over morphs. Also, why do you think the female neglected the lay-box (or was it not in the enclosure yet)? Thank you for the free content you put out, you've entertained me (and others) immensely and even helped me get through some tough times.
Well, they definitely don't need to hold onto this baby, as cute as it is. It has a kink in its tail, so it's not fit for breeding purposes. I bet someone will love and spoil it as a pet, though!
This is a really interesting question. I agree that there's no point on this baby specifically being used for breeding due to the kinked tail, but if a snake was kinkless in these conditions, it could be something worth looking into. The only problem would be the possibility that there's something reproductive internally that could go wrong solely because of being forced to carry eggs (although that would be less of an issue with males, at least as far as harming the snake, but the babies could be damaged by less than ideal sperm). Well, and the luck you mentioned, I suppose. I've always looked at picking out breeders from the perspective of "who came from the most healthy, proficient clutches" since that gives a better idea of their genetics in regards to breeding, but I don't think hardiness is a bad thing to breed for in animals. Rats/corns are pretty hardy as-is but I know I wish more people selectively bred for longer-lasting corns!
I know the little guy's going to a home and they can name him whatever they want, but in my heart his name is Batman because of his little mask and anger issues
Aww, I practically teared up at the end. It’s really sad that the others didn’t survive but I’m glad that this guy made it and I hope he goes to a nice home :’)
Now I’m attached to the little angry baby goth snek and hope that you keep him so I can keep seeing him I relate to him as an angry little goth only child
It's my goal to adopt a snake with a kink. Growing up my mom got me and my sister's two kittens and one has a major kink in his tail about 5" from the base that made the rest of his tail stunted. Then a little under two years ago me and my at the time roommate got two kittens and we realized like 3 days later he has a little kink in his tail. Barely noticeable but you can feel it easily.
My partner and I both have little hognose babies with kinks in their tails. We think they were hatching accidents rather than genetic defects, but the jury is out until they're older and we try breeding them (his boy is a snow named Miguel, and my little girl Clementine is an albino het axanthic, so she's essentially het snow). The kinks don't seem to cause them any problems. They're both good eaters and growing steadily. He's super sassy, and she's chill, but with an impressive threatening stare she uses to extort mice out of us.
Snake eggs breathe through the egg membrane and placenta, right? So at some point they have to switch to breathing through their own lungs, which is a bit tricky if the egg is full of goop. I wonder how many of these fully-developed-but-dead snakes have simply drowned because they didn't get the egg open soon enough and ran out of oxygen?
you probably know this but that is why the cut the eggs open one one pips. that way they know the cutch is ready to hatch, and the ones with less skill with their egg tooth have an escape from drowning. but since they did not do a dissection, it could very well be that an internal organ did not develop and not that they drowned. In human babies it happens for a vital organ not to develop, but the rest of the baby does, even though the baby is basically never "lived". not saying it is, just that drowning is only one of the possibilities in the case of this clutch
@@mcanta2898 Well, the one that pipped, might be the last one, which is why the other drowned. I know some breeders, will cut and investigate, when it is close to expected hatching time, so this won't happen. But they have said in earlier videos, that they are not doing that, because they want to make sure they are breeding strong and healthy babies. If the egg tooth is not developed, or things like that, then you don't really want to continue that trait.. So even tho it's sad, it's the harsh reality of survival..
