I'm the proud owner of a 2003 Rav 4 with 5 speed manual transmission front wheel drive and just about 151,000 miles on it. I was recently rear ended and it's being repaired now but some people think I'm crazy fixing up an 18 year old car and I tell them it's an 18 year old Toyota, I've still got another 150,000 miles to go !
Just an update on post-collision repairs. The rear end looks brand new with the replaced spare tire cover and bumper work done. I live in Texas and the clear- coat has suffered, especially on the hood, so I had it repainted and also replaced a frayed drivers seat belt too. Feels like a new car ("almost")
I've put rav4 steel wheels with goodrich 225 70 R16 tyres on mine. The interior is thoughtfully designed and I really like being able to easily remove the rear passenger seats. If you change the oil regularly these engines can last a long way.
Can't leave out the first gen Toyota Highlander they are built to last bullet proof. I have a 2005 Highlander AWD it's a beast in the snow perfect for winter conditions.
This are cool. Never owned a second gen. I've owned two first gen. A 99 AWD and currently a 96 FWD. The 96 was bought by my dad for my mom originally. Then it went to my sister and now i have it. Amazing too. Only 226,000 miles on it. 😊❤
Bought an 05 with 192k miles on it, mostly because it was the Sport trim. Not one shred of regret since I know how to repair and maintain it myself, these babies will last.

I was the proud owner of a 2004 Rav4 up until recently when I was rear ended and sandwiched. Unfortunately the car was considered a total loss and it only had 83k miles on it and we had always taken such good care of it, so many memories in that thing 💔
2001 2.0/5spd. "L" Trim. 192k/mi. Owned for 1 year now. Loving it! I too am blown away by the absence of rattles, squeaks, etc. What a solid little car! I also own a 2009 Civic Hybrid (and motorcycles). This Toyota complements my stable wonderfully.
I have a 2003 RAV4 it is my commuter I live in the mountains of New Hampshire and I travel to Portland Maine every morning for work 80 miles to work and 80 mi home. I have put well over 100k miles on the car in the last year and it has not had a single problem regular. Regular oil changes and it has not let me down once runs like a top and still looks like new
I've got a 2001 in silver too, same spec, 134,000 miles no rattles no squeaks, I've got chunky all terrain tyres on too..i love it, had it over 2 years, not a single issue
I’ve got a 2001 rav 4 with 405000 kms on it and have zero problems with it at all! The car is a machine and will never stop running, I camp with it often and I have no trouble with it off road
I also have a 2001 RAV4 auto with 83k on the clock. Runs good never been stuck even in a country 3 times bigger than UK with only 20% paved/tarmac roads, the rest is mud/gravel that turns to red custard when it rains but thankfully no snow☹️ so cannot complain with temps between 85f winter to 120f summer. I do I have one mod only and that's a spare wheel cover which says "I may not be fast, but I can go anywhere" which makes the locals smile when they see it. Run it on 215s Goodyear all terrain tyres.
I also have the 2nd edition 19 years old, but my transfer case seal was leaking oil so I get it replaced.. I live in the Caribbean Trinidad and Tobago 🇹🇹
I buy one yet...1st owner, 100 tkm from 2004, 116ps Diesel for 5000.- Euros. No rust or scratches on it...like your Video, best i found on YT, greets from Austria
The scenery/mountains are absolutely stunning - what a beautiful part of the world you are in. RAV4's of that vintage are excellent, and I have always felt the Japanese built vehicles are generally better. All the best from a Scottish subscriber:)
I have an 2005 Rav4 in the same color except mine is Automatic and has around 98,000 miles ! I love the car too (: It doesn't get as bad here in the East Coast as far as snow compared to you guys up North but I've never really had any problems going over snow during the winters the past 6+ years :D Definitely think this car will get me through another 5-10 years no problem! All I do is Oil changes, Tires changes, Air filters, Coolant, and just the occasional car wash after winter salt. Thanks for the content love the mountains (:
Hello, I recently bought a Rav 4 2002, 2.0 petrol from Italy without any rust, a very well preserved example with 98,000 km. The first owner was a 1936 year born. The car has not been driven for the last 3 years and has been sitting in a garage. Inside, everything is like new, as well as underneath and the engine. I am fascinated by this car. Yes, I bought it quite expensive and many people criticized me that it was a lot of money for such an old car. But I know very well the quality of Japanese cars from those years, I have owned over 30 cars and they were all Japanese. Greetings to all !
Wow,that sounds like an amazing find!! Congratulations on your RAV4!. They are awesome 👌 I recently bought a first-generation 1999 model, a video located below ruclips.net/video/BQRheJvrHCQ/видео.html
Ive had it for over 10 years now. It's the best Toyota utility car I know. My door closes thesame way. And thesame small piece of the front fender is gone on mine too. Wow..I love this video.
I got mine last week. Rav4 2004 1,8L 125 HP 2wd 5 speed manual transmission, and only 141,000 km. 17 years old and still running like a charm. i'm impressed. Toyota FTW!
By the way. Awesome review haven’t been able to find any new and decent reviews of the car. I can see you have put great effort into you editing. Keep up the good work.
I have a 2004 RAV4. I just added a dual battery system with smart isolator. There was enough space on the driver side of engine bay for a group 24 deep cycle. Powers my Alpicool fridge. Might get a rooftop tent for it next! Same thing, mine had 215,000 km and feels great
Got a 04 Rav4 2.4 L 5 speed manual transmission with 310k miles U.S. model. Bought it from a neighbor 10 years ago, good suv for it's age. Once used car prices come down hopefully by the end of 2022. Will upgrade a newer suv, automatic getting tired of driving manual especially being stuck in traffic 101 405 freeways no fun shifting first second gear.
Just bought a -03 with 180 000 miles on it. 2.0 petrol and a manual and it runs great 👍 I was thinking about a rav4 or the crv but this vid made me choose the Rav4 and I don't regret it.
Wow, thank you for the comment. Congrats on the new vehicle. These things are bloody awesome. I can't get over the amount of stuff you can get in them, it blows me away. I just brought a six foot tall bookshelf home in mine, haha.
I have a 97 first gen that I've put about 19k on it & I love it. Mine rattles at this point & I feel the bumps in the road more but has been very reliable!!! That AWD has been great in the snow
I love the 1st generation RAV4's. I like them so much that I bought a 1999 and I'm working on it now. Thanks for the comment, and have fun in your RAV4! 🤠👍
We had a Gen 1 1998 Rav4, constant AWD... It was a awesome vehicle. The second generation like yours I would consider it to be the best constant AWD going around, yes the Subaru's are good but my pick would be a Rav4 between 2001/2005. Great vid and explanation. Hope it servers you well.👍
Thank you for the awesome comment. Yeah those gen 1 RAV4's are amazing. I still see some minty one's driving around from time to time. The big difference between the Toyota and the Subaru is longevity. I had a Subaru and it's just not the same 😁👌👍
I recently bought 2001 3-door AWD RAV4 and I absolutely love it! Amazing car! Also got AWD Toyota Matrix and Volvo XC70, but RAV4 is my favorite! By the way I probably wouldn't buy 5-door, coz 3-door was the exact thing I really wanted. Been looking over six months to find it - it's much more rare
Good take on the second-gen RAV4! I bought mine just about a year ago and have put 13K miles(about 21K km) on it, with overall mileage at 210K(338K km). Mine is an '04 with the 2.4L engine as well as the 5-speed manual; kind of a rare combination as I've only seen one manual second-gen for sale in my area besides this one. While the 5-speed manuals are more robust than the automatics, they can develop issues where 5th gear starts grinding and eventually popping out; this can be fixed without removing the gearbox(which is a major and expensive undertaking due to the layout of the AWD system). My particular RAV4 had this issue when I bought it; I elected to have the gearbox completely rebuilt as I want to keep this little beast. At this mileage I have a bit of oil consumption; about 1L/1000mi(or 1600km). I figure I'll be due for a replacement engine in a few years, but I'd rather do that and keep this one on the road. I live and work in Colorado; I use my personal vehicles for work and I do see harsh conditions and dirt roads at times. With proper tires these are great in foul weather; I've never had any issue with traction. The AWD system in the first and second gen RAV4s were taken directly from the Celica GT-Four rally car; which I also own(and was crazy enough to use as a winter vehicle up until I bought the RAV4, haha). I find the 50/50 torque split more responsive than the computer-controlled type in newer vehicles; paired with the manual transmission it's a great combination. To answer comments about fuel mileage I'm getting around 23-26mpg(10.2-9.0 L/100km) using regular grade fuel. It's not quite as economical as the newer, computer-controlled AWD systems but I'll trade the efficiency hit for reliability. My typical range is around 320mi(515km), though a lot of my driving is on highways or back roads with not much city use. Overall, this is a great small CUV with a bit more in the way of practicality than newer models. The low liftover height, ample cargo capacity(especially with those seats removed) and the great maneuverability make it a great work vehicle. I'm still very happy with mine nearly a year later. I hope you get many years of service out of your new workhorse! :)
Great info! The 2.4L with the 5 speed is the model of choice, great find! I do love the 50/50 split AWD system and I find it better in the snow than the 2018 RAV4 that we had. Also the headroom and visibility is amazing in this vehicle. Thanks again for this great information and taking the time to post it here. 👍🍻
i bought a 2003 rav 4 for my daughter in 2010 ,now its 2022 and i have it, still in excellent condition has 133, 000 on it , i keep regular maintenance on it and going to run it till it dies lol. i just replaced the driveshaft, brakeline , and getting front and rear axels replaced seals and all , next plan to replace head lights cause there yellowing ,but it runs amazing and can take it almost anywhere. i use to have a forerunner , if i get a chance to get another i just might 😁😁😁
I picked up a 2004 awd with 70k miles it's auto wish it was a 5 speed. Put a jvc head unit in the double din, gives me handfree with Android Auto, I have done a few repairs when I got it in 2018. Awesome rav 4 have 115k now. Had two people wanting to buy it. Never allowed them to give me an offer. I enjoy it too much. Had a 2006 Matrix awd before this. 250k gave it to my brother who is still using it too. Toyota makes some gems. 7th Toyota for me.
I own a 2002 Rav4, 2 wheel drive automatic transmission. Owned it for almost 9 years and have 138,000 miles on it. I service it every 2,000 miles and run Mobile1 synthetic oil in it. Good gas mileage and it will probably outlive me. They are great vehicles. My big complaint is that Toyota started using plastic headlights in 2001 and the sun and environment screwed them up. Tried all the so called remedies and non worked. Bought a new set online for $89.00. Be careful as most replacements DO NOT COME WITH BULB ASSEMBLIES. They also DO NOT MENTION THAT IN THEIR ADS.
The second generation Rav4 is based on the Camry / Corolla / All-Trac with the addition of ABS front and rear ABS plastic body panels to keep rust at a minimum. My 2002 Rav4 still even has the original exhaust and since the Camry and Corolla use the same parts as the Rav4, parts can be easily purchased at most retail auto parts stores. Coupled with a 2.0 liter engine and AWD the Rav4 is a beast in the snow and excellent on gas in both the winter and summer! Any Rav4 should easily last +300,000 kms with basic maintenance.
Yeah it is a beast,my dad even bought me a new 2018 car just so i can give him back his old baby. And tbh even when i compare now 2002 rav4 with a relatively new car...i can finaly understand what my dad was talking about :)
@@user-tb7rn1il3qyeah mines starting to shift funny after 20 years but it’s low mileage under 150k I’m honestly thinking about putting a remanufactured tranny in because I don’t want to pay for a new car and all the technology and computer screens don’t do a thing for me. I know it’s the trans I messed around with other possible problems.
@@eviltomato7674 brother, idk if you ever replaced your tranny, but it’s likely the ECU, not the tranny. I have an 02 that I am having to replace the ECU because it gets back connections over time not communicating with the transmission
I picked up an 05 2l diesel yesterday. Needs a bearing. 170k miles. £800. Its amazing. Same bumper trim missing. Great video. .I'm going to get new trim off ebay. £35.
Fantastic review that helped me alot before my purchase, Ive just bought one of these here in the UK, Rav4 2005 T3, VVTi 2.0L petrol, 5 speed. Its a one owner from new car with only 60k miles on the clock, i drove over 600 miles to pick up the car after looking at some sorry examples close by to where i live. The drive home was fantastic, super comfortable, lots of power for a little car and such a nice place to be sat in the drivers seat. It ticks every box in my book for a family car, the only negative being i only got 29mpg max on the motoway driving in a straight line for hours 😂, i opted for toyota reliability over fuel efficiency, these little cars are an absolute gem, an this example i bought is in immaculate condition and garaged all of its life the headlights, rear lights and paint are like brand new, the underside with only very minor light rust on suspension components which is unherd of. It was an xmas gift for my partner she loves it but not as much as me! 😅.
Got my sisters three door manual 2003 petrol Rav4 with 80,000 miles from the uk seven years ago, she still wants it back 😂🤣 The French garage giving it the two yearly safety check was shocked at the rust because they never see rusty cars on their cars, NO SALT unlike the uk. It hasn’t worsened being in France and I’ve sprayed all kinds of everything on everything and in all orifices in the hope of slowing its demise, so far so good. Great to work on I’ve changed all fluids, ( very important if you want to keep a car ), particularly the transfer boxes and differential, ( don’t trust garages after years of experience ), and learned great detail from RUclips vids. Let the serpentine belt go 10,000 over the recommended change, AND I HAD ONE READY TO FIT 🙄, the only time the car has let me down, don’t do it, but even the replacement only took a garage minutes charging 17 euros labour ? 🤗 Very important to watch the tyres have the same wear on a permanent AWD like this to protect the transfer boxes. One gripe, the American models rear doors open wider than mine ??? Otherwise this car should last longer than me 🤗. Would not swop it for any Rav4 past 2005, heard of too many problems the newer they are 🙄
doors open wider because left hand drive......in u.k.rear door blocks out the tail, lights when parked on left side of road ....dangerous for traffic coming up behind........its illegal to alter the door stays ...2005 mk2 rav4..75 thousand miles....5ft7ins mattress on top of container boxes...leisure battery behind passenger seat with split charge relay (car battery automatically charges it)....seperate interior lights and charging points all wired in through a fuse box and switches (in the side cupboards)....camping cooker strapped to the rear parcel shelf (mattress underneath where my feet are) 12 volt chinese diesel heater fitted (exhausted out the rear drain hole)...woks off leisure battery also......a quick erect tent if needed ........folding chairs.....an awning which just attaches to the rails with 3 extendable strong poles with a heavy duty tarp.......oh and also a bottle and bucket just in case...etc happy days..£3000 6 years ago
Just bought a 2004 3 weeks ago with 200 000 k on it and so far I'm blown away by how great this car run and feel ! The direction feel a bit shaky on the high way I winder if that something normal. But I can't way to put some kilometers on it !
Great Vehicle. Great review. Beautiful scenery! I have a 2011 V6 limited with the 3.5L, 269 HP engine that I bought new, (Toyota doesn't make anymore) the thing moves like lightning. Really love it. Only have 20,000 miles to date, but that's because I have a couple of other vehicles. Hope to put a lot of miles on it and keep it forever.
Thanks for the great comment. Much appreciated. Your Rav4 sounds awesome LOL. I have seen a few with the V6 logo on them but never knew how fast they were.
I had one of these, the sx6 model. I had to sell it when I lost my job and it’s the biggest regret. It only had 87,000km. Hands down the fastest, safest cars I have ever owned and so reliable
I have this exact car and mine has 184,000Km on it. I can defiantly back up the head room claim, I am 6'5 and It's the first car I've driven that doesn't have my head banging the roof.
I got myself a 2010 rav4 v6 sport and it has a 5 speed auto with low 234 and locking options, runs 55% front, 45% in the back. Put a 2 inch lift and bigger tires on it. Very good vehicle
@@samr9736 the transmission has a low which is basically 1st gear and it doesn't automatically shift unless it is in drive, I can manually shift 1 to 4 so it works really well for off roading
Great scenery, great car! Mine is -04 2.0 aut with 352.000km. All is working well. I bet i can easily double the kms with regular maintenance with no expensive surprises.
@@JimmyMeatwhistle I´ve had no issues with the car since 2017 when i bought it. Along normal services, main thing is to clean the mass air filter if you´re constantly driving in sandy dusty terrain. I do it myself in every 80.000kms, easy but takes a little time. At the moment seems that the original rear wheel bearings are soon done. You can keep the car up and running with low costs giving what it offers. Price-quality is second to none.
I have the same but in d4d 2.0 116cv, for me is the perfect car to drive in road and off road, it isnt the best at road or off road but is the perfect combination at both. Best regards from Andalucía (South of Spain)
Hola.
No te arrepentiras, cualquier duda, dimela sinn problema
Love my car, the other Day I was installing some electrical stuff and had to remove a couple of plastic panels at the floor and parts of the dash and panel around the steering wheel and it was super easy and nothing broke. On other cars I have been workin on the panel always cracks when trying to remove them or the plastic clips breaks
Great review with fabulous scenery! In 2001 Seattle I had bought a brand new 2001 special 5 speed stick with sun roof and shipped it over to Island of Hawai’i. But a few years later I had to sell it due to some financial issues. I missed it so much a couple years later I was able to find a 2002 base 5 speed stick and SO LOVE it! (really miss the sun roof tho) … Island of Hawai’i is extremely tough on cars due to sea salt and some roads not in great condition … but no rust except a but starting under the hood. In places it’s starting to need a paint job as it’s always been out in the baking sun. I love it so much that want to take extra good care of it and when I get the money will do a huge upgrade with paint and take care of any rust just starting. It only has 141 K miles and I use Costco original tires intended for this RAV4 … however am thinking about getting slightly larger tires next time … IMO this car is an extremely valuable CLASSIC! Have fun with yours … but it hurts when you say that you are going to use it as beater :(((
Great video. I have your cars little cousin: A 2006 Toyota Matrix 4WD base model with 209,323 miles and it still runs perfect. These are some of the best vehicles Toyota has ever made. Make sure you service transfer case in addition to rear diff as this is often overlooked.
Hi, and thanks for the comment. Great vehicles, that's for sure. My daughter has an 07 Matrix front wheel drive, and it's been unbelievably great 👍. The four-wheel drive version would be great. 👍👌
I was getting some body work done on my 2010 is 350 last week and had to drive my sister's old car (2002 rav 4). It has 227,000 miles on it. (365km). Runs great! Tranny was replaced at 180k miles because of the ECT you mentioned. The fact that the 4 speed auto went 180k with an original ECT essentially telling the transmission to burn up is incredible.
@@TwentyTwoThirtyThree ECT is the electronic control transmission module. They were programmed wrong and would tell the car to shift incorrectly which caused excessive damage to the transmission over time. Basically these are bullet proof transmission but the factory ECT was killing them. Most likely your was replaced/updated so shouldn’t be a problem but you can get that checked
beautifull! I bought a 2004 2.0 d4d diesel model, it works perfectly, problems with the fifth gear of the gearbox... the rest all incredible... from Argentina
They are great little cars, I’ve had two 1st gens in the past both 4 door manuals, they refuse to break and I wasn’t gentle on mine lol enjoyed the video 👌🏼 think I might buy a second gen now haha
@@JimmyMeatwhistle I got a 2008 XTR eventually, it’s been family owned from new with full history so should last me a good while 👍🏼 hoping to get plenty of road trips done in it over the next few years 😁
Here in UK, I bought my almost identical car (same spec but sadly no cruise). One previous owner, the car lived in London in a dry space (no rot). I bought her 3 August 2021 and can depend on this car like no other car I’ve ever owned. Including 9 BMW (an 1990 E30 325iSE and two E46). Just 55,00 miles when I got her, now on about 67,000. The car drives and feels like new. I only discovered a few months ago on a car vertical check (only did goo check at time of cash purchase)…. She might have been given “a mileage haircut” of about 19,400 miles. In any case she is on a maximum 90,00 miles now with FSH, most of mine at Toyota dealership. The gearbox feels as though it’s honed from granite. The steering feels lovely and mechanical. Some of the roads here in UK are terrible surfaces and even cause accidents (thankfully relatively rare) due to people swerving to avoid potholes like craters. When this car sees potholes she is like a little child excitedly jumping into puddles in their bright yellow, brand new wellies - just for the fun of it. They said back in the day that Japanese cars were ‘bland’. No. This car is sharp suited with Lexus IS200ish headlight styling. Every one and crease looks perfect. My 2002 RAV4 2.0VVTi 5 speed has only felt like she’s properly running in today following its 70,000 mile service (done according to time). This car even gives me the 32mpg combined figure specified by the manufacturer. Twenty two years ago!! What more can I say. I trusted this car when living two hundred miles away and my elderly father (who passed 6 months ago) had suffered a catastrophic stroke. It never entered my head for a fraction of a second that this car might let me down. Because I KNEW it simply wouldn’t. I’d decided to maybe now sell and get something more economical. Stuff that! And 32mpg is AWESOME for this type of car,-man’s being a permanent 4x4. . She is even ULEZ compliant, if I ever drive into London. Over here a same age Mazda 6 2.0 petrol - with only front wheel drive and surely better aerodynamics - can’t hit more than 28mpg combined sycle when I last looked! I mean…. Come on!!!!!😂 The Mk2 RAV4 has to be becoming a modern day classic. Like the Mk2 Golf Gti. Only more reliable.❤

Awesome review on this sweet very underrated ride. I have an '04 5spd limited which I bought in '08. It was a super hard find even back then, now almost non-existent where I live in Ontario, Canada. I have used her to commute during the winter months to snowy Muskoka with nary a problem. She's now got 330 K kms and still runs like a clock! You should be good for at least another 200K's :)
Hey Jim thanks for the comment 🍻👍 great little cars for sure. I know Ontario very well, spent most of my life in Ontario and anything that old is usually is a ball of rust. Pretty humid in those parts compared to where I'm at now. We see the old grabs here daily as well as old forerunners from the late 90s. Keep that thing going, it's an awesome vehicle and congrats on the 330k! An easy 200 more to go. 😁
@@JimmyMeatwhistle Thanks Jimmy! You are absolutely spot on about the climate here in Ontario. Sadly, most of these old units here don't stand a chance against road salt combined with heat and humidity in the summer. I have been very fortunate that mine is standing up as a result of relentless undercoating. I'll hit the undercarriage as often as I can especially when we get these wild temp swings. Anyway, thanks for the comments, I'm really glad to hear you are enjoying your Rav! PS - Looks like an amazing spot where you are! Visited family out West many moons ago and was totally in awe of the landscape as compared to Ontario...lol We were also amazed to see so many old Toy's still on the road :)
Great review thank you, I'm gettig my first car, an 04 Rav4 this afternoon, to commute over winter in Scotland and I can't wait. Seems I made a good choice
got me a 2001 rav4 5 speed 4wd with 57000ks best find of my life was up there but worth it live in new zealand $12000 not cheep but will last me 20 + years np
They last a long time I love mine, I going to do a manual transmission because they are super fun to drive and manual transmission offers anti-theft,lol
Great video on the RAV4! Man...how do you find such vehicles that are in such great condition? I never had a RAV4, but that model is pretty cool. Had to LOL when you said no one knows how to drive a manual 5-speed anymore - it is so true! Most manufacturers no longer seem to make them available anymore. I learned how to drive with a stick, and your right...those transmissions last a long time. Enjoyed your review of the RAV4, thanks for doing it!
Exactly!! 👍👌
Oh, I forgot to say, I had the body shop polish the very oxidized headlights and they absolutely sparkle now
Good info! I saw a few RUclips tutorials on how to do that. I think I'll try it out.
I've put rav4 steel wheels with goodrich 225 70 R16 tyres on mine. The interior is thoughtfully designed and I really like being able to easily remove the rear passenger seats. If you change the oil regularly these engines can last a long way.
I have a 2001 rav4 with over 278000 miles... Automatic transmission, still going strong and highly reliable... Going to keep it until I die.
Want to sell it? $500? A friend of mine that just moved to Bayside, Queens wants one.
Is it still good?
I bought one yesterday 04 5spd with 280k miles in it super clean
Probably one of the best all around vehicles ever made. Up there with the Corolla , 4Runner, and Tacoma
Agree 💯

Can't leave out the first gen Toyota Highlander they are built to last bullet proof. I have a 2005 Highlander AWD it's a beast in the snow perfect for winter conditions.
This are cool. Never owned a second gen. I've owned two first gen. A 99 AWD and currently a 96 FWD. The 96 was bought by my dad for my mom originally. Then it went to my sister and now i have it. Amazing too. Only 226,000 miles on it. 😊❤
Can’t beat a Toyota! 💯
And that's a fact 🍻👍
I bought a 2005 last year, I've had lots of far newer, more expensive cars, but this is by far one of the most enjoyable cars I've ever owned 🙌🏼

Sorry to hear that it was smashed. But yes, they're great little SUVs

Toyotas are awesome. Yeah that RAV4 is a little tank!! Thanks for the comment 🍻👍
I’ve got a 2001 rav 4 with 405000 kms on it and have zero problems with it at all! The car is a machine and will never stop running, I camp with it often and I have no trouble with it off road

I currently driving mine and its amazing, hard to change it love too much
I also have a 2001 RAV4 auto with 83k on the clock.
I got a toyota Rav4 2004 and everything work well. Just needs to maintain this beautiful car.

I also have the 2nd edition 19 years old, but my transfer case seal was leaking oil so I get it replaced.. I live in the Caribbean Trinidad and Tobago 🇹🇹

The scenery/mountains are absolutely stunning - what a beautiful part of the world you are in. RAV4's of that vintage are excellent, and I have always felt the Japanese built vehicles are generally better. All the best from a Scottish subscriber:)
Thank you for the awesome comment! You will definitely have to get out here sometime and enjoy the scenery firsthand 👍🍺🍻
I have a 2002 RAV4 with over 217000 miles living in Baja Mexico. Great gas mileage. Perfect for me & my 2 dogs.
They are awesome 👌 I recently bought a first-generation 1999 model, a video located below

Ive had it for over 10 years now. It's the best Toyota utility car I know. My door closes thesame way. And thesame small piece of the front fender is gone on mine too. Wow..I love this video.

We had a Gen 1 1998 Rav4, constant AWD... It was a awesome vehicle.
The second generation like yours I would consider it to be the best constant AWD
going around, yes the Subaru's are good but my pick would be a Rav4 between 2001/2005. Great vid and explanation. Hope it servers you well.👍
Thank you for the awesome comment. Yeah those gen 1 RAV4's are amazing. I still see some minty one's driving around from time to time. The big difference between the Toyota and the Subaru is longevity. I had a Subaru and it's just not the same 😁👌👍
My Toyota RAV4 2.0 diesel has just done 201k miles great car!

I picked up a 2004 awd with 70k miles it's auto wish it was a 5 speed. Put a jvc head unit in the double din, gives me handfree with Android Auto, I have done a few repairs when I got it in 2018.
Great review! Just got a 2005 S with 145k miles, all original! and working on it to make it spotless! these are definatley keepers!
Congrats. You will love it and they are awesome👍
Great info Bob, thanks 👍👍

Thank you very much, and thank you for the awesome comment and info! Sounds like you've picked up a gem. Enjoy 👍🍺🍻
Got my sisters three door manual 2003 petrol Rav4 with 80,000 miles from the uk seven years ago, she still wants it back 😂🤣
The French garage giving it the two yearly safety check was shocked at the rust because they never see rusty cars on their cars, NO SALT unlike the uk.
Very important to watch the tyres have the same wear on a permanent AWD like this to protect the transfer boxes. One gripe, the American models rear doors open wider than mine ??? Otherwise this car should last longer than me 🤗. Would not swop it for any Rav4 past 2005, heard of too many problems the newer they are 🙄

I really liked your video. The music passages had a real great feel to it, very adventurey, which was totally fitting the RAV4
Wow, thank you very much! Have a great weekend 👍
Great RAV4. I got an 08 RAV4 with a 5 speed transmission. It was the same in this gen where the auto only got 4 gears.
This with the 2.2 D-4D with emissions delete is a monster.
Yes Toyota's are full of quality. Every single piece is well thought out. Thanks for your comment and info
Have fun with yours … but it hurts when you say that you are going to use it as beater :(((
I got a 2001 rav4 L AWD 4 speed auto black, over 200,000 miles on I put 50,000 on it and it's great supper practical and reliable love it
Yeah, they are pretty sweet Vehicles. We are loving this one that's for sure. Thanks for the comment 🍻 👍
Solid vehicle. It will go forever !
Thanks for the comment. Loving this little RAV4. Although it doesn't seem like you're in a compact while driving it. 🍻👍
@@JimmyMeatwhistle With the KO2s, it is a great set up. We had one in the family a little while ago and loved it.
I just purchased a 1 owner 2001 rav4 L with 5speed awd 213k miles.i also have 02 fwd automatic with 304k 6 years its never broke down.
Congrats on the purchase. They are beasts 👍🍻
What does the ECT mean? The transmissions were bad? I have an 02’ with about 240K KM
@@Bdog0820 Are you meaning the ECU? As much as I know the PCM is integrated into the ECU. I'm currently having issues, so I'm replacing the ECU
Excellent review! Great video. I almost stood off my seat when I saw you pop the rear seat out. Now I need to get one!
LOL. Thank you very much for the awesome comment. Yeah the way those seats come out of the back makes total sense. Great vehicle. Two thumbs up
beautifull! I bought a 2004 2.0 d4d diesel model, it works perfectly, problems with the fifth gear of the gearbox... the rest all incredible... from Argentina
Thanks for the comment 👍. Enjoy your weekend 🍻
I’ll end up getting something similar for a daily winter driver.. I like it.
They are great little cars, I’ve had two 1st gens in the past both 4 door manuals, they refuse to break and I wasn’t gentle on mine lol enjoyed the video 👌🏼 think I might buy a second gen now haha
Thanks for the comment Reece. And happy Hunting for your next RAV4👍🍻
@@JimmyMeatwhistle I got a 2008 XTR eventually, it’s been family owned from new with full history so should last me a good while 👍🏼 hoping to get plenty of road trips done in it over the next few years 😁
Wow that sounds pretty great! Thanks for the awesome comment 👍👍🍻
@@JimmyMeatwhistle thanks dude! I’m gonna binge watch some more of your videos soon 👌🏼
I love my 2001 RAV4 too 🤙🏾 tough little car takes me everywhere. #Snow2Sand
Definitely little tanks!
Got a 2004 diesel here in th UK great car, feels like a new car the gearbox is so precise and its so well built the wife would kill me if i sold it 😊
Thanks for the comment and info. Yes they are amazing cars 🍻👍
I mean…. Come on!!!!!😂
The Mk2 RAV4 has to be becoming a modern day classic. Like the Mk2 Golf Gti. Only more reliable.❤
Hello Dude. Great to see the RAV4 Gen2 in the Rocky´s 🙂. I life in Germany and my 3 Door RAV4 Gen2 is still running great! 300.000km (186.000mi) with NO Problems or Issues! Only the Generator was gone to Heaven at 270.000km. I drive this Car as Daily every Day to Work and back (60mi). Hopefully it runs the next 186.000 miles like the first. The quality is amazing- i´m a Testdriver for Mercedes- don´t mess a new MB with an old Toyota.... 1:0 Japan 🙂I have the 2 liter Diesel Engine (D4D) Motorcode 1CD-FTV.
Thanks for the great info and comment. check out the latest RAV4.1 video I just uploaded. 👍🍺
@@JimmyMeatwhistle Great! No joke: yesterday i´ve buyed a Tacoma 3,4 liters V6, build 2001from US with 90000mi (ok, for German Numberplates i have to do and change something (headlights, fog light and so on). But it´s a real Japanese/US Pickup you can´t get in Germany...."Tacoma" is in Germany a "Hilux".....never ever the same Truck! Tacoma "oldschool" is a realy "man´s toy". I´ve paid only 5000 bucks.....ok, till it get´s German numberplates....7000 bucks- but almost very cheap and i know: the RAV4 Gen 2 and the Tacoma will bring a smile to my face until I can't drive anymore ;-) The Tacoma is meant for the forest to chop wood for the winter....and charge four e-bikes in the summer and have fun! Sorry, for my rusty german english!
Hi! That is a great truck. I love the old school toyota's! The 3.4l v six is an awesome engine! Same engine in my ninety seven 4Runner 👍. My 4Runner does not burn or leak any oil or any fluid. You have great english, and thank you for the comment . Have fun with your new toy 🍺👌👍
This little japanese SUVS from the early 2000's like the Rav4 Vitara or CRV have un common that are super reliable. I can go to a mountain trip without being scared of breakdowns.
Agreed! 🍻👍
Love these cars I have a 2002 2.0d4d rav4 and they now sell diff lock kits for them with a push of a button! Great video!
Hey Nick, thanks for the comment 👍. You can also get limited slip Diffs off of eBay for them. pretty cool machines, that's for sure.
I just picked up a 1st gen RAV4, link below.

@@JimmyMeatwhistle thank you good sir for that I never knew. AutoEquation check them out they sell loads of goodies for the rav4 gen2 even got diff vids on youtube
I got the late 2004 with electric buttons for the climate controll. Mine is automatic, i love that thing. Only problem i had is that the gas pipe was badly rusted. Its a plastic cover in the back wheel house, and it was filled whit dirt and mud so no wounder. Only flaw doh. Drives and shifts like a dream. I just passed 26000 km. Regards frim Sweden
It's funny you mentioned that gas thing because we recently noticed a bit of fuel smell. Hmmm. Thanks for the awesome comment and totally agree with you, these things are awesome. Like most Toyota's😁
@@JimmyMeatwhistle okey, it was an easy fix. And i payed like 70 bucks for the new pipe. Made in Taiwan but what the heck, a pipe is pipe right 😁
Thanks for the info! Agreed a pipe is a pipe 😄
Got a 2001 3 door 200 thousand k. Automatic. Awesome little rig.
They sure do last 👍
Great review thank you, I'm gettig my first car, an 04 Rav4 this afternoon, to commute over winter in Scotland and I can't wait. Seems I made a good choice
You made an excellent choice 👌. Congrats on your first car 👍
@@JimmyMeatwhistle thank you!
Great work mate ! Well done
These were the perfect size. I'd love an AWD model with the 5-speed!
got me a 2001 rav4 5 speed 4wd with 57000ks best find of my life was up there but worth it live in new zealand $12000 not cheep but will last me 20 + years np
Like new!! Congrats on that thing. That is quite the find!! 👍🍺. 57,000 kilometers is like two years' worth of driving, awesome 👌
I know where that is.... I'm there almost every weekend. thank you for this review as i'm looking into getting one myself.
Thanks for the comment Brandon. Rugged little vehicles.👍😃
They last a long time I love mine, I going to do a manual transmission because they are super fun to drive and manual transmission offers anti-theft,lol
Had our 2005 17 years, 150k no problems at all.
Thanks Steve! Its true, I think that was the last gen that made the 5 speed option in the RAV4. I love 5 speeds! :)
Back in August I bought a first gen Ford Escape Hybrid 2005. Love it.
Subbed!!
I love those gen escapes. Rugged! Thanks for the sub much appreciated👍🍻
@@JimmyMeatwhistle thanks. I think the older Escapes don't get enough recognition. Everybody wants 4 runners and xterras.
The older escapes are the ones that last the longest from what I've read. Friend of mine has one and loves it! I like the look of that generation too.
