  • Johnny Depp In The Libertine. Prologue & Epilogue. Beginning & End Scenes. Johnny plays John Wilmot, 2nd Earl of Rochester. The 2 scenes are filmed like interview or him telling his story. The Epilogue begins with an opera song with applause in the theater. A surprising final salute to the wild poet.
John Wilmot was an English poet & courtier of King Charles II's Restoration court, who reacted against the "spiritual authoritarianism" of the Puritan era. His poetry & works were at that time raunchy & driven by the fast life he chose, leading to his early demise at 33.
It's one of Depp's favorite films that he's worked on. He said he enjoyed entire experience of it. He filmed it around the time that Pirates of The Caribbean found major success.(early 2000's.) Roger Ebert praised the film for being exactly what it said it was in the prologue & exceeding that promise that Johnny says so boldly as the film opens; "You will not like me." However, by the time the end scene comes around you see him again sitting in the same healthy form as the start of the film. You may feel different about him by that point. You may not like him still, or maybe you liked him a lot less. Indifferent maybe? But me personally, aware that most of his pain was self chosen, seeing him sick from partying then mourning the "love of his life" Lizzy who he mentored was saddening. Seeing his last effort & maybe his only effort trying to change unveiled him as more human. So at the end seeing him young & healthy means more. Maybe speaking from an afterlife in these scenes. Did I like him at the end? I was neutral at the beginning, & by the end I agree with my thoughts above I felt a bit sorry for him. Or more bluntly, I felt SOMETHING for him by then. Rather than "not liking him" cut & dry as he gave 2 choices in the prologue. I felt more than I should, especially for a man intending to live as he did & to go out the same. He ends with a question; while slowly retiring back, wine in hand, into a darkness unknown. This time asking many times "do you like me now?" Well, do you like him?...now?
    -Thoughts By Objection Hearsay
"He never said a foolish thing, Nor ever did a wise one. A merry monarch, scandalous & poor."
If you were to recall an English poet famed for excesses & bad behavior, you'd probably think of Byron. A few might instead choose Coleridge & his opium, consumed by the pint. But there's a another English poet who was quite too much into women, wine & substances. He was debauched enough to earn a bad reputation, & lived & passed away 100 yrs before Byron or Coleridge were born. He was, perhaps, the great libertine of the age.
John Wilmot was a popular English poet & the courtier of the restoration court of King Charles II. The King returned to rule in 1660 after the execution of his father in 1649 (hence “restoration”) was in something of a party mood. Wilmot was happy to join his King in this new wave. The Earl of Rochester or Lord Rochester was a notorious figure at the court of Charles II in the 1660s & 1670s. Handsome & a talented poet. But it's telling that, like Byron, posterity has focused on his misdeeds & not his poetry. This is the direction the film took, starring Johnny Depp (The Libertine) - where his poetry is seen in several scenes, & where stories of his misbehavior take main stage. It depicted an accurate vision of how Rochester was! As per the information available from the time, the conclusion is that John was committed to the mindset of “live fast & go out young”. The handsome Lord Rochester was fond of wild parties & loose women & men. His favorite indulgence, all of them. Substances & promiscuity were his best friends. Hence, this is the impression he made & wanted people to see. Even though he was a debauched man w/a bad reputation, he had rare writing talent. He had a good reputation for being extremely witty & sharp at the Restoration court. He was even given the title “The Best English Satirist” by Andrew Marvell, who was a great English poet: high praise indeed. What got him into trouble was the content of his poetry. Most were censored during the Victorian era. The more buttoned up Victorians refused his work to be public. From 1920 his poems were again made available to read, which led to reappraisals from various literary figures.
John's reputation as a poet is somewhat damaged by the fact that much of his work was unpublished. He didn't need the money, & much of his poetry was impromptu, mixed into his conversation or for private amusement. Something of the polished poet in Rochester can be seen from his best published work: A Satyr Against Reason & Mankind. The poem offers some sophisticated arguments against rationalism & in favor of excess. It's at once deceptive, self-serving, & enticing.

I agree. Very underrated film & performance. It's deep, and yes, dark. But his acting was impeccable in it. I don't think anyone expected how good his performance would be. I'm glad to add it to the collection of Depp Classics here. Thanks for watching & happy holidays.

Well said! The vernacular he used or accent (I'm not quite sure what to call it, except amazing) was something to behold. Amazing to think he was still so early in his crossover into speaking in different accents & accents from different centuries. Very well said my friend. Merry Christmas. ♥️

I finally watched this movie and it´s definitely one of his best. Tragic, but very intense and food for thought. And one proof more what an incredible and versatile actor he is.
After watching most of Johnny Depps movies I noticed that he mostly plays characters who are neither really good nor really bad. And that´s rare in the world of cinema where, let´s say 90% of the movies have their good hero and their evil villian. Makes his movies even more interesting.
And... Do I like him in the end of the film? I understand him. I feel for him. And I also liked him a bit throughout the movie, because he tries to be honest and he is some kind of mirror of the society.
