    Amazing how Frank Herbert & J.R.R. Tolkien get so much credit for world build while Robert E. Howard is barely known to the masses. Howard's world is just as rich & detailed as Thiers is, if not more so. 💪

    How did they get it so accurate? It almost sounds like the WHG-ENF-Bell Beaker transition.

      With Doggerland as "Atlantis". Replace Pict with ENF & it's pretty close.

    I'm so confused, is this fiction or not? I stumbled across this while searching for an audiobook of legitimate historical findings on the ancient picts. So hard to find.

    What about the Basque . Heard they were related to the picts.

      The real Picts held the language of the Basque, the original Gaelish during the Romans times, though I doubt they had mongoloid features since Herodotus met them with and notest their women with fair white skin and beautiful ornaments, originally the same race came from the Sahara desert, moved to Cannary islands then to mainland Europe and the British islands, they all had the same language and similar features, they were the first men.

      @@Downey-2000 the Pictish race according to what I've been able to gather In information and Herodotus is a race that came from the Sahara, specifically Mauretania, then they moved to Cannary Islands and then mainland Europe and the British Islands, the best depiction of them is in the Drawings of Egipt which show the colors of the skin of each race ins specific,Mauretanians although were people from the dessert were the ones with very pale skin, lighter tone than the Greeks and wore tattoos all over their body, the Greeks called them Berbers and they are the ancestors of the picts that lived and populated Europe.

    What's funny is all of this is utter Victorian historical analysis, which was based on myth, wishful thinking and pure bullshit. The story of the Picts, as a Celtic people is complex and deserves more respect than this kind of shite. Nevertheless, this bullshit contributed to some great fantasy characters.

      REH never claimed any kind of historical accuracy to be fair. He was actually quite vocal about his stories playing in a purely fictional setting. There are a few pieces concerned with his settings here, including some letters on it he exchanged with his fellow writers in the "lovecraft circle". It is simply weird fiction - all good ;) Considered "pulp" by many. Personally, taking into account the influence these stories had on popular fantasy culture, i'd be more generous. Probably we wouldn't have had Dungeons and Dragons or a World of Warcraft as it is now. Actually... i'd recommend Michael Moirs lecture on Weird Fiction here on YT, its quite extensive.

      Howard didn't present any of this as real and he specifically distinguished his Picts, which were essentially the same race as the American Indians in his world, from the Picts of Scotland.

    • @kforcer
      @kforcer 3 года назад +1

      @@Arkanoid1212 I wouldn't call "pulp" a pejorative; it just referred to the paper quality of the magazines that featured the stories. Weird Tales, Shadow Magazine, etc., were pulp magazines but the stories within provided a major influence on popular fiction, especially adventure fiction in all of its subgenres, not to mention horror as well.
