- Growing up a Kiwi in NZ but born in China it has always been one of Peter's dreams to go back to the country of his birth and stay in a remote village nestled among spectacular mountains.
We took a high speed bullet train from Guangzhou to Guilin and got to turn Peter's childhood dream into reality by going to an old Chinese fishing-farming village from the Qing dynasty and staying there for 10 nights. Peter found an ancient Qing dynasty "lao jia" (old home) accommodation which was where we stayed at. It's located in a small village in rural Guilin, China with a population of around only 300 people.
It's a couple hours drive to get to the village. There is only one ferry to this rural Guilin village and one ferry back out. We mingled with locals, enjoyed the scenic beauty, peacefulness and all the simple everyday things in life. As a Chinese born Kiwi growing up with Western culture this has been a massive thing Peter always wanted to do so since quitting our jobs to travel the world. It's amazing to finally turn a childhood dream like this into reality and check a number of items off both our bucket lists.

Special thanks to Hai Bo for being a wonderful caretaker during our stay and the rest of the team too like Mao sifu delivering us soy bean milk daily and inviting us to his home, Xiaomo for cooking us the delicious vegetarian meals everyday and also to Ayi for the homemade baozi and keeping our place clean too. That feeling of visiting your childhood dream destination, and realizing that dream now! ⭐😄 We're super happy for you Peter! Love the wooden classic style of the Airbnb, and the courtyard is beautiful! Such a calm place to live in🌳🎋 Breakfast is so simple, yet looks so delicious, especially that baozi! The kids came following to learn from the shaolin master from NZ!! Was that Peter doing some farming at the end? 😋 Totally love the simple lifestyle of the locals, looks like a really lovely place to visit, Guilin is definitely going into our bucket list! Thank you guys! 🥰 It's a really rural location that took us ages to get to but it was a very simple and peaceful way of life which was nice (just not the giant spiders hahah 😂). Definitely awesome we got to make Peter's childhood dream come true though 🙂👍 Even really enjoyed the vegetarian meals each day too. Hahah those kids were cute! Really liked Peter and visiting us after school and on the weekend too lol 😁 Haha nah not Peter farming at the end.. just a villager we saw during one of our walks around while the sun was setting 🙂🌾 thought it was a nice shot! ❤️

The kids were pretty adorable! They eventually started showing up shirtless too copying Peter who often worked out shirtless as long as no other guests were around haha thought that was really precious! 🥰

The feel of this place has the history of imperial times... Nothing has change the culture.. The history... Well besides the inside kitchen but the natureness is all still there!! Loving the room
Yea it was built in the Qing dynasty and the owners fell in the love with the place so renovated it and turned it into a guest house for people to stay at and experience China's countryside too. Super handy it has a kitchen, kitted with washer as drying machines as well as a shower and seated toilet lol. Made it a more comfortable stay for sure than back in the day 👍🙂 Def had some epic mountain and river views too!
Thank you so much. I loved your video and if I was younger, I would rent the same B&B in Guilin. I visited there, the city in 1996 and floated down the Li River and named my dogs after the city and the river because I had left my heart there. When you bit into the bun it was so satisfying to hear the sound you made. Lovely video.

Lao,What a wonderful place in China, and I think some of the people there speak Tai, a language that completely ceased to exist in Assam in the early 19th century. I (Ony) and my family have been to Guilin before but with a group tour. We took the ferry or boat and sailed on the river. It was a long time ago but the memory is still here, still remember how beautiful those little mountains are in Guilin 😍

The accommodation had everything you need in terms of modern facilities while maintaining its historic charm. There are more than butterflies, spiders and centipedes also on the regular. Yen was on edge 😅

I was apprehensive about the bugs I'd have to face hahah thankfully only ran into some creepy ones towards the end of the stay 😂😅 I think they said originally they use to cook meat for the meals too but too many foreigners didn't know how to eat the dishes so didn't enjoy it so they changed to all vegetarian to keep it simple and more palatable for the majority of visitors 🙂 less waste that way too I guess! The mountains do look similar to the ones in Ninh Binh ay? We thought the same thing when we saw them too 🙂 Hehe yes the kids were rather cute.. by the end of our time there they would show up shirtless too for their workouts to copy Peter 😂 so precious! ❤️🙂

I remember travelling from Guangzhou to Yangshuo (near Guilin) back in the 1980s; a day and a half river journey to Wuzhou followed by an eleven hour rickety bus ride. Now it's a two and a half hour high speed train ride. I'm happy that people are now convenienced but I have great memories from the olden days.
Hi Earl, back in those days I remember traveling around with my grandparents too very different to how things are now 😁 must have been amazing seeing Yangshuo back then I imagine the buildings were a lot less commercialized?

Wow 9 years! You must really love it there 🙂👍 Can you speak or read/write any Chinese too? Peter was born in Shanghai so we made a few videos from there this trip too (he's actually in the middle of editing them right now!). Xi'an, Hangzhou and Beijing are pretty awesome places too if you get a chance to visit as well 🙂👍

I love the idea of going back into the past and being so close to nature so this is something I'd definitely want to experience. That breakfast looks so delicious, homemade bao definitely looks different than what I can find here. Exercising in that setting must be lovely.

Always happy to see fellow kiwis in our comments! 😁👋 Yea it was nice to be able to go overseas and travel again once the borders had opened and it was easier to return home to Aotearoa! Turkey was our first country we visited once that happened and we stayed 3 months there coz that's the max allowed without a visa for NZ passport holders 😊 we made a bunch of videos from China tho which was our trip a few months before the start of the pandemic 😅 feel lucky we got to go! It's been too long since seeing Grandma but China is still tough to go into unfortunately. Hope you get the chance to visit some time too.. it's such an amazing country and pretty different to how western media portrays. Hope you're well over in the Mighty Waikato and the weather has warmed up there! Auckland has been cold and rainy as lately.. hurry up summer ay 😆❤️

Did it get really chilly in Waikato too?
