- Chris Whitley - Hotel Vast Horizon (live at the RTL2 studio in Paris)
Thanks to Hiroshi and RTL2 for this recording.
At the Horizon Hotel sound & vision never appear together, Enjoy!
R.i.p. chris whitley , the most underated artist i have ever heard , some day people will get it .
My mother took me to see Chris Whitley perform live as a birthday gift. I can honestly say out of thousands of musicians and acts I’ve had the pleasure of witnessing live and interacting with, his performances and warm demeanor stood out from the rest. Very few people I have met in this world can make you feel like you’re the only one in the room while conversing. Chris Whitley was definitely his authentic self, a true musician… The real thing. I’m so glad my Mom has incredible taste in music. ☺️
got up and needed to hear this, cracked a beer, lit a smoke, had a damn good cry looked at my dusty ole guitar. its been so long already but its a awesome day to feel the hearts this tune reaches out to. Cheers to everyone on this wonderful day.
chris knew every nuance of tuning, and made many of his own , magical , dark & beautiful
I keep coming back to this one. Such a unabashed performance. R.I.P. Chris Whitley. Thank you for the music.
to all you people who think he was a druggie etc. he was dying of cancer. just FYI. he was a true mad genius unlike any other musician out there. sadly missed.
Well, he was. I’m afraid die hard chainsmoking poor health and booze caught up with him. He burned the candle at both ends with no regrets.
Chills, especially given the circumstance. What a unique talent. Deeply missed.
His tuning for this song: A D A D E A. Very, very rare to see. This guy is a master at open/alternate tunings.
Just Him and his guitar. that is simply imperfect perfection to my ears
@frankdialogue he died from lung cancer a short time after this was recorded. it's amazing that he was able to play and sing at all......
This song ! I have been listening to it every day for a while now,He does that to you.....poor Chris ,light a candle for him .
His music has grabbed me like few others. Haunting. Love his daughter's voice also.
Jaw dropping amazing
Chris is a legend and a god. I saw him live approx 15 times. He's a legend.
True musical icon, no training, lived his music. Had talent, that now comes thru his AMAZING daughter, Trixie....
who cares if its i tune, his voice is enough and the guitar sounds amazing, this is a real perforance, from a real man, who really left us to soon.
wow, that was really great. really really great. i love it when a singer sings in tune no matter what. i love it when a player can make music with an instrument no matter how out of tune. this is my first introduction to chris whitley, and i look forward to hearing more. --peace, dainis w michel
Chris my brother....... Rest that weary soul at the hotel vast horizon...... I'll meet you there..
the most eerie sounding national on the planet ….love that guitar ………………….and chris of course
🤍 and miss you Chris....what a song!........
thank you very much for posting this! i was looking for it over and over after removing from the rtl2-site. awesome...
Raw. Real. Rare.❤
I think i'm finally going to get a resonator guitar for myself after seeing these clips. the tone is just unbelievable. and you're right about Chris making it work.. great video (synced or not) thanks for posting it.
We'll all see you there, bud.
Godziggety. This is powerful stuff. R.I.P. so sadly missed.
Amazing. Just purely amazing.
Excellent. What a sad loss he was.
potentially my favourite vid on the whole web! :)
i saw him live twice, still cant believe he's dead.RIP.
dz your kind words touch me.
You happen to be hearing a take where he didn't have the tuning completely under control...does that take away from the song itself? I never got to see him live but have been told Chris was quite embarrassed about his vintage Nats going out of tune during a show. Believe me, he was 100% aware if something was out of tune. You can't always stop in the middle of a song and tune your guitar when you're playing live.
I love that it’s out of tune. For some reason, it makes the lyrics feel that much more intense.
Imperfection = vibe = soul
amazing
couldn't have said it better dz.
RIP Chris.
@frankdialogue he wasnt a druggie. he didnt produce his videos. he was an artist however and a poet. nothing wrong with his videos either far as i can tell.
The best.
Wow, his guitar is perfectly flat and out of tune in places and I stress the word perfectly. He is fucking stoic and he did not go gentle into that good night.
My favorie version
gophertele, I know what you're saying, but speaking as a musician who has played Nationals have you ever tried to tune a vintage National in a lower tuning? And then keep it in tune during a performance where it can go out of tune after one song? Speaking of which, I would LOVE to see the rest of this session. Chris truly did take the reso to the next level.
Oh shit! There's tons of VHS to digital sites out there that'll do the transfer for like $15! Dooooo itttt!
What a treat! I agree, resynch the audio, it could be done easily.
damn good poet too
gotta see that biography
how was that out of tune? it was whitley tuning. perfect!
This is real.
That's amazing!!! Would it be possible to resynch the audio?? Not that it's super-important, but it would make it all that more special.
I can't believe not a single person has talked about that bulge, lol. My man dressed left.
He was dying of lung cancer. He wasn't on drugs. Inform yourself before you post something ignorant the next time.
when was this?? Towards the end?
He was so incredible skinny o.0
He was dying of cancer. Passed not long after this :(
Fire roads for this one-loss loss TOMMY27
@frankdialogue
and herion
@frankdialogue he had lung cancer.
Actually nicotine is a drug man...
On a lighter note...Chris, your junk is showing! Lol
There it is! I just mentioned this today. Bros dingle is just bouncing in time. Once I saw it I couldn't focus on anything else.
