    My mother took me to see Chris Whitley perform live as a birthday gift. I can honestly say out of thousands of musicians and acts I’ve had the pleasure of witnessing live and interacting with, his performances and warm demeanor stood out from the rest. Very few people I have met in this world can make you feel like you’re the only one in the room while conversing. Chris Whitley was definitely his authentic self, a true musician… The real thing. I’m so glad my Mom has incredible taste in music. ☺️

      Well, he was. I’m afraid die hard chainsmoking poor health and booze caught up with him. He burned the candle at both ends with no regrets.

    His tuning for this song: A D A D E A. Very, very rare to see. This guy is a master at open/alternate tunings.

    wow, that was really great. really really great. i love it when a singer sings in tune no matter what. i love it when a player can make music with an instrument no matter how out of tune. this is my first introduction to chris whitley, and i look forward to hearing more. --peace, dainis w michel

    You happen to be hearing a take where he didn't have the tuning completely under control...does that take away from the song itself? I never got to see him live but have been told Chris was quite embarrassed about his vintage Nats going out of tune during a show. Believe me, he was 100% aware if something was out of tune. You can't always stop in the middle of a song and tune your guitar when you're playing live.

    Wow, his guitar is perfectly flat and out of tune in places and I stress the word perfectly. He is fucking stoic and he did not go gentle into that good night.

  • @subtoxin
    @subtoxin 15 лет назад +1

    gophertele, I know what you're saying, but speaking as a musician who has played Nationals have you ever tried to tune a vintage National in a lower tuning? And then keep it in tune during a performance where it can go out of tune after one song? Speaking of which, I would LOVE to see the rest of this session. Chris truly did take the reso to the next level.
