What does your tier list look like? Lemme know!
UPDATE: so the naval update changed a lot of the core balancing of the game, especially with the roads and lumber hut nerfs. Trying to cover all the intricacies in this comment would be very ineffective so I will probably just create an entirely new list at some point.
Tier list updates: (6/17/2022) At this point in time, there have been no updates that alter the balance of the tribes. The list remains accurate.

For 4 player 324 map (what i usually play)
      S - Bardur, Yaddak, Cymanthi(dryland)
      A - Polaris, Imperius, Kickoo(archipelago, lakes, water world), Aquarion(archipelago), cymanthi(other map)
B - Zebasi, Luxidoor, Elyrion, Quetzali
      C - Hoodrick, Xin-xi, Kickoo(other map)
      D - Ai-mo, Kickoo(dryland)
      E - Vengir, polaris, (dryland)
      F - Oumaji, Aquarion(other map)
Yaddak S because they can skip riding to get custom house, and road connection can also help upgrade city.
Cymanthi more useful on dryland map.
Aquarion on Archipelago actually pretty good, can focus more on port for road connection, riding also close to custom house.
Quetzali actually quite annoying because they can make ally early, which is a definite scenario on 4 player game.
Polaris can survive more easily on 4 player map, when they start using gaami, rider, and battle sleds, they are kinda hard to deal with.
Sorry its a situational tier list :D.

I rlly appreciate how the free tribes are one of the best ones and that it might not be the case for spent ones. The idea of spending money to play the much more interesting and fun tribe is definitely much better than the general pay to win concept. It’s the idea of fun opposed to hierarchy in power that attracts me.

I think a great update to maybe balance out some tribes would be if each tribe not only started with that tech but "specialized" in it. Well, Vengir are supposed to be difficult, their description says so. Xin-xi has an intel advantage from the start, which can be useful in a variety of situations, so one tier up. And honestly, with the sheer variety and speed the Cymanti have, even though not overpowered anymore, I would still consider them S-tier.

i play a lot of cymanti. realistically i main them. and the thing that holds them back is that they fall behind in developing. the fungi not leveling up turn 0 puts u a turn behind. and it feels like ur always a turn behing, just a few stars per turn behind ur opponent.
the balance was that ur units are cheap. so even though u dont make as many stars per turn as the other tribe is, ur units are more effiecient. basically, they were the zerg of polytopia. but the nerf to hexapods made it so they dont always trade up anymore. and the nerf to raychi really hurt that playstyle of 'cheap, effective, and disposable to the point where the units have a built in self destruct'. now all except their hexapods seem to just be alternate versions of their counterparts, with both advantages and disadvantages. but now with a slightly worse economy,

Interesting list. I don't play 1v1s so I can't really dispute placements, but I play a lot of 8-player 256 tile lakes games, and in that meta I find Xin-xi significantly better than it is in 1v1s. Climbing on mountains lets you see extra land, which really matters when you get a bunch of free stars for finding tribes. Xin-xi land also essentially has double the normal metal, which heavily encourages rushing smithery, and suddenly getting swordsman early into the game with an actual econ to support it is terrifying. They're still not incredible in small crowded maps, but their starting tech and land is a lot more useful there than it is in 1v1s.
Ai-Mo is also pretty sick in crowded maps, especially with the changes the game received over the years. Ever since literacy became a 33% cost cut rather than 20%, and ever since you got stars from meeting tribes rather than techs, researching nothing Turn 0 and taking Philosophy Turn 1 makes it much, much easier to grow your econ, and that cost cut really matters late game. Usually in late-game, you have to stick with the techs you've got, but Philosophy lets you research and counterplay whatever you want because every tech is so darn cheap. Also early-game mind benders can be kinda funny.
And as far as small crowded maps go, Vengir still sucks.

I think that Ai-Mo is a solid choice too, but I play in a different way: I try to explore (maybe with an extra T0 warrior) and to research hunting or organization to level up cities, and then I try to rush a giant with the Altar Of Peace. Often, climbing and mining are required, so swordsmen are in reach. After getting the giant, I often use the Park Of Fortune to get a second one soon. I think that this strategy is strong, unless I meet an opponent earlier than T5

In very clustered maps with more than 1 player Xin-Xi can hop on a mountain and collect the bonus stars from seeing everyone, upgrade mining, use local scout to gather more bonus stars and in my best experience get a level 5 city on round 1.

I definitely put cymanti as S tier because as long as you can last a decent amount of time you can get incredibly strong defensive units like kitons. The most powerful aspect, though, is that they simply have a higher maximum power ceiling for units, as well as being able to make effective use of extra units you can fir on frontlines by exploding and cycling units in. In addition, with how space efficient they are, they can still equally compete with players who have a couple more cities

Now with the Path of Ocean update, it seems like:
-Bardur are weaker ( forests chop bring 1 star, lumber huts cost 3), it has become A tier
-Imperius because they have a lot of forests have been a bit downgraded, so maybe A tier too,
-Yaddak are weaker ( roads now cost 3 stars), I would say C tier
    - Aquarion has moved to B in my opinion ( they now have the amphibian starting tech, which on a water map has some big interest)
    What do you think?

  • @Ian-qu6mg
    @Ian-qu6mg 2 года назад +8

Now, I would like to preface this by saying that I'm sure you have much more experience in Polytopia than me, but if you put Yaddak in mid B tier you obviously haven't seen their true economic potential mid game. They have quicker access to customs houses for the long game, but they can also just rush riders and roads for shorter games. I absolutely think they belong in at least low A tier. Other than that, great video

This tierlist was sort of expected.
It also sort of matches the poly champions tierlist.
But a few notes for future tierlists:
    1. Cloaks are better that you thought. If they attack your capital, say good bye to the city spt for 1 turn. Attacking with cloaks all city at the same time is a win condition.
    So imperius + & quetzali +.
    2. Polaris knows what is the enemy tribe (almost) always. At turn 0. So your strategy is countering. Polaris also can defend against cloaks by freezing. So polaris ++ .
    3. Luxidor has a lvl2 city, but doesn't have +1 spt or explorer on capital. That might be a balance change but its demeaning. - luxidoor.
ALSO please make aquarion have aquatism again. Raise awareness about the fish people.

ive always thought a fancy nerf to bardur would just to switch mathmatics and spiritualism. thematically, itd make sense, u go through archery to get mathmatics so both ranged unit are in the same tree. and bardur couldnt just go from hunting to forestry straight into math, those all synergise off each other and all three give population.
but, they say the best nerf is to buff others. and i think a universal buff would be to allow fruit to grow on farms. ive always said if u want to nerf bardur, just give other tribes the 'bardur treatment'. imagine being able to harvest fruit off a space, then build a farm on it, jsut as bardur hunts on a forest then builds a lumbar hut on it. this would buff imperius, zabasi, and a bunch of other while not really touching bardur. this would allow three population to come from one space, but thats not new, cymanti do that. also, its thematically correct, u get fruit from farms, like how u would hunt in forest.
like the 'bardur treatment' from earlier, just as kickoo could fish in a space then build a port in it, a buff to xin yi would be for climbing to grant access to a resource. this would be a buff to all tribes that have really mountainous terrain, which bardur isnt really known for. another nerf by buffing. imagine being able to extract a mineral from mountains by the climbing tech, then building a mine on it with mining. sure the game would need a whole nother resource, but i dont think itd be game breaking.
bardur has always been strong, even post nerf. ive thought about the math/spirtualism switch nerf in my head as a pretty resonable nerf. but im on the bandwagon of just buffing everyone else. take what makes bardur so incredibly strong and just give it to everyone else. give them the 'bardur treatment', which is their immense efficiency.

Polaris is so much fun but is also a late game monster with Gaami spam. They can effectively nullify all naval powers like Kickoo and Aquarion(only tridentions basically), Ice Fortresses are just a straight upgrade over catapults and a group of ice archers + fortresses are just teams of murder where even dragons don't escape. It struggles in early game due to its special units being expensive but it can kick A tier tribes like Zebasi and Kickoo out the door(you have to be really good to beat Cymanti). I'd put it mid A but this is your tierlist and you're entitled to your own opinions.

I agree with lots of the points here. Polaris being... just kinda different or strange is accurate lol, my main question mark is on Xin Xi, which I use alot, and I have a mixed opinion on it because yes they're not particularly better, however in my long experience the tribe terrain has a larger impact on their strength than most other tribes, there are very common interactions that Xin Xi finds favorable in the early game because of mountains, and mining plus forges makes for fantastic city growth in the midgame and the swordsmen are very strong, both especially because of the abundant mountains. Xin Xi has the... highest metal generation in the game I think.

Aquarion is more fun then, say, Hoodrick, in my opinion. If you are an intermediate player like me, it can be a fun challenge. Quetzali used to be the worst tribe in the game, but with embassies and peace treaties, they can get a lot of money without war. Elyrion is good, but that weak egg super unit makes me want to get a park sometimes in cities under pressure. When it levels up into a dragon, it's pretty good. Kickoo is S tier in my opinion. Early game naval domination is OP. Yaddak is just fun to play. That is my opinion.

The only things I would change are switching yadakk and Zebasi due to how inconsistent Zebasi’s resources and how solid yadakk is in a slower meta. I would also put aquarion in D tier, considering that crabs are actually a decent unit on lakes and aquarion preforms very well against other lower tier tribes like xin-xi or ai-mo. Polaris would be B tier on a 324 lakes map because they have room to expand and somewhat consistent outpost connections to speed up early game development. Other than that I agree with the tierlist.

    • @vgogaming3685

Switch yadakk and zebasi - absolutely, because farming leads to construction which is useless and roads lead to trade which is probably the second best t3 tech.
Put aquarion in D - no lol you lose the game before it even starts because you dont start with a tech + inconsistent/low resources (e.g. needs hunting to lvl up capital but organization for a village). In crowded maps you usually lose on or before turn 5 and on slower/spacious maps your opponent(s) can rush trade/sailing/chivalry before you do and win from there.

I understand the argument about Cymanti not being as fast as some of the turn 0 capital growth, but I think it has some of the best options in all parts of the game. With their shamans, very early game can quickly go your way with a simple converting attack. Early and Mid Game can be a bit dicey with how you choose your tech, but arguably very strong. And, in the late game, I still have not lost a game with them. Not. One.

  • @jonathanmiller322

As busted as Cymanti is, I've recently found that, in the late game, catapult spam with swordsman in front is a really solid way to counter them, especially in maps with choke points. If you have enough catapults and can keep them safe, you can mostly wipe up the doomux spam that they send your way, and virtually negate centipedes. However, this strategy can struggle against exida.

A rider, and then shortly another rider (or production) is like +1 village early. And then roads with tech, or just production or another rider. It's a weird resource curve, and sometimes not a useful one, but when it smashes, it's like a horde. You can take +1 resources in your villages, because you don't need an explorer. You have 2. Riders. That take more villages. A turn or two earlier than anybody else.

I think you could’ve factored in other types of games besides 324-tile 1v1s on lake maps. A lot of tribes change depending on the type of map they’re on. Drylands, for instance, make tribes like Yadakk and Oumaji better while they make Kickoo and Aquarion much worse. On water-based maps like Archipelago and Water World, the opposite is true. On crowded maps, tribes like Vengir and Quetzali will be stronger. While I don’t agree with the tier-specific placement, I do agree with the general placement of the tribes (like on the top, bottom, or middle).

I think that Vengir is not great, but is a lot better than most people first assume. Lots of players only go for Vengir on tiny maps and just make swordsman the whole game, which is fair, but I think there’s also a more economic way to play Vengir.
First of all, I think Vengir shouldn’t really care about how big the map is, so long as there are as many opponents as possible. This helps you spawn closer to them, makes them more vulnerable as it’s harder for them to expand past their one city, and also gives you more early game income from discovering different tribes
I think the cornerstone to Vengir population is mines/forges. With the insane amount of metal they have, they can just get like lvl 3 forges in every city of there’s, which is a lot of population. Finally, they have reduced forests, fruit and animals, but they have a normal amount of crops. Given the fact that there’s more open room for crops to spawn, I recommend taking farming too. All this together can help Vengir really compete outside of swordsman spam

I agree with a lot of these placements and I was fascinated by some of the reasons you mentioned. If I were to make any change to the list, I would move Polaris and Hoodrick to a higher position.
    1. Polaris is undoubtedly a superior and fun tribe. And for a reasonably large map they would have enough room to expand over land and ice, not to mention that they move farther on ice with polarism. I can see how they may suffer mid game as they lack the economy and resources. But for this scenario Polaris can easily dominate a large map.
    2. Hoodrick can be a pretty useful tribe given their abundance of resources as stated in the video. This is why I believe they deserve a higher spot. They have a surprisingly incredible strategy to dominate a large map, which is to go straight for hunting, forestry and mathematics. Their massive forest terrain is perfect for defense and the forestry route, like (and possibly better than) Bardur. It may take two or three turns to jumpstart their economy but it gives them a massive opportunity to utilize their forests and sawmills to get a booming economy and a few early game giants. Trust me, I did this with a friend and on a random multiplayer game of large lakes.
This is all my opinion and I respect the ideas brought up in the video and everyone’s’ own preferences.

Given the caveats of 1v1 and lakes map, this list makes sense. However if you can get Polaris up to a super unit or two, I find that your economy is flying and you start spamming super units making them near unstoppable. Similarly for Cymanti, if you can get them up to a super unit, by that point you are poisoning left and right and your victory is probably only a matter of time.
When confronting Polaris or Cymanti, I like to end them early or keep them contained.
Cloaks are creating a new playing dynamic. Creating a handful of them and bringing them to bear on an enemy at once tends to box in the enemy within a dagger death trap.

@@enjaded7222 Absolutely agree. It takes careful placement to ensure you can handle a giant well. Exposing your sections to the giant and not the head is a good trick. Then you can explode, weaken, and combined with a few other unit attacks you can kill the giant.

My favourite tribe is quetzali because they look cool and I really like diplomacy. I’m not all that worried about how viable a tribe is cause I can generally win regardless
