Hi, Ruth. After watching your video, I went over to Internet Archives and downloaded a book of Burns' poetry. As always, thanks for your insights through another entertaining episode.
Thank you Ruth, my Father was a Scotsman from Falkirk, he fought in WWll in the Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders. Even though my parents immigrated, it was their second marriage each of them and they had me and immigrated to USA in 1965. My father retained his Scottish accent and often would recount to a mouse, and I have given his Robert Burns book with the tartan to my oldest son now who is 38. Thank you for this podcast. ♥️♥️♥️ 🏴 🇺🇸🏴 I live in Huntington Beach in California
Dear Ruth, Your videos are excellent! I am travelling to Scotland for the first time in April. Part of my preparation for the trip is reading a chronological collection of all the songs and poems of Robert Burns. I'm at 1793, so I getting to the end. This video was such a treat to watch and was so well done. Thank you!
I'm learning so much about Scotland and my heritage watching your videos. I'm a Burns fan and, as I'm retiring, making sure that his poetry is on our library shelves to honor the poet of scotland. Happy Robert Burns Day.
Watching this video brought back some special memories. I visited the cottage and graveyard in Dumfries in 1980 as a child. I bought a small book of poems in the cottage as a gift for my mother. In 2008 my mother died on burn’s day and I still have the book today.🏴
@@AJ-fr6ig She definitely portrayed a lot of great info, hopefully shares similarly to other visitors. The Globe visit here makes me really want to get to Scotland as soon as possible.
@johnmcvicker6728 I'm in Scotland, but I've never been to Dumfries. Perhaps I should put that right this year. There's a lot of cool places in Scotland, you should definitely visit. Bring a fleece and a brolly though 😆
This was my favorite video of yours of all times. I am a retired English teacher, so of course I enjoyed your Burns trail, and I even learned a few things about him I did not know. The most amazing thing is that they play Burns most famous song at the closing of shops??? That's crazy! My daughter and I just visited Alloway in November, 2024. We viewed the birthplace and the museum, and took the Burns path, but we really ran out of time before we had to catch our train, and did not get to view the gardens. Now I am sad that we traveled from Edinburgh instead of staying in Glasgow so we would not have had the nearly 3 hour train ride and would have had more time, We did that though, because we visited in November, and all of the highland tours we wanted to take from Glasgow were not available. Now I see, though , we only took the first part of the Burns trail, so we will be back to go to all the other places you mentioned, especially his grave and the Globe. It would also be fun to stay in the boat you rented in Glasgow, and journey from there. I can't believe we missed that lovely painted tunnel in Alloway, but I can highly recommend the soup they had in the gift shop. Thanks so much for this wonderful video and tribute to Burns on his birthday. Take the small donation to either feed Ernie, or by yourself a small amount of your favorite adult beverage.
Hi Barbara, that is very kind of you thank you. I’m so glad you enjoyed this video so much! The Globe is well worth a visit and I’ve heard the food is really great there so many an overnight in Dumfries would be a good idea too so you have time to properly visit everything. You can take the train between Dumfries and Glasgow too.
@@ruthaisling Thanks, that sounds great, an we get a train or bus from these points to go to the other places you mentioned like Mauchline. I am also an antique dealer who mainly sells antique jewelry now, but I have a lot of Mauchline, Fernware, and tartan in my stock so I'd like to go to all the places you visited, Would the best base for someone who doesn't have a car be Glasgow, or somewhere else?
Hi Ruth my wife and I are new to you channel absolutely love it makes us want to come back to Scotland and spend our time there, we are from Melbourne Australia and spent time travelling from Edinburgh to London last year you have given us inspiration to come back and search Scotland in more detail, keep up your good work, cheers Phil 🇦🇺
Great video. I didn't realise we had so many places associated with Burns to visit. I've only ever seen his first house. It's interesting to go to all the sites associated with one famous person in history. I did the same on my video about the Brontë sisters.
WOW! Ruth, What a complete and amazing story. Robert Burns is such a household name all around the world and yet I knew so very little about him. Thank you for opening my eyes to his history. I am sure he is looking down and is so proud of how you have presented his life and times. Well done.
Loved this so much. I went to Edinburgh last week, my first time ever in Scotland and I am in awe, it was stunning. I now want to go back and see some of the places you have shown us on your videos, thank you for your wonderful videos. Scotland is a place like no other.
It’s so surreal to here about Robert burn’s life it make you proud to be Scottish tam o shanter and the dressing of the haggis is 2 of my favourite poems, happy burns day Ruth!
What a wonderful "Video Address to a Scottish Poet" you've created! Thanks for the tour of Burns's land, family and works. It's sobering to think I've lived twice as long as he and accomplished half as much. I'm amazed how many people are passionate about him 266 years after his death. I've heard his 'Address to a Haggis' many times, but hearing it read by a Scot adds richness and texture to the words. Bravo and many thanks. Happy Burns Day to you too. :)
Being from Prestwick, my school prom was at the Brig 'o Doon Hotel, and we celebrated in the gardens. Today is also my Gran and Girlfriend's birthday, so it's a special day for me for a lot of reasons!
Thank you for this very interesting video. As a chef i have done a few Burns nights. Carried the Haggis to the master for him to address the Haggis. One occasion he actually put the knife too far through and went into the table. Difficulty removing it. Happy Burns Day to all the Scottish people around the world. Hope you have a good day and a dram or two. 🏴👍🥃
Amazing commentary so well put together and told. Burns' short life reminds me of the anecdote of the fellow who skids up to his graveside in a plume of dust, worn out and bedraggled, announcing: "Wow, what a ride!"
It pains me to say poetry is mostly dead here in the United States. I have always loved poetry all of my life. Robert Frost, Emily Dickerson and Robert Burns. They were my childhood hero’s. Their words spoke to me, and still do.
Such a great story on Robert Burns life and even though he was quite youg when he died he had accomplished so much and what a life full lived. Thank you Ruth so much for sharing. cheers from California.
Thank you so much for all the lovely videos, Ruth. I enjoy them so much, and this one particularly! So I just ordered the kindle version of his poems and songs. Keep on with your great videos!
Yes, Happy Burns day (yesterday). Here in the south of England I had a shock on the way to visit my dad. Turned into a side street and I heard that familiar screeching sound - then saw a piper outside a pub! In the pouring rain, no less! But I'd argue that Burns wasn't really born into poverty if his family owned their house. I was surprised when Ruth arrived and said this long building was his house. OK, makes sense that they had animals housed there are well - pretty normal I think. But if you could afford to move because your family got bigger, in my view that means you are at least comfortably off. Whatever, Ruth has reminded me SW Scotland is on my bucket list of areas to visit. I've spent a bit of time on the east coast up to Edinburgh - but not enough - or just headed up the A74 from the border. So I need to turn left at Gretna and explore :)
Yes, you should definitely come and explore as there is a plenty to see. And what a wonderful reminder, hearing the bagpipes! Thank you so much for watching!🙂
Just had a dram of Bowmore to celebrate, and reading a few verses of To A Mouse, which is a poem WAY ahead of its time! "I'm truly sorry Man's dominion, Has broken Nature's social union" echoes the ecological crisis we face now!
I was based in Ayrshire for three years and lived at the Navy base at Prestwick for a while, and also in Ayr. Our work’s Burn’s Night in the wardroom was always fabulous. We held our summer parties at the Brig ‘o Doon Hotel. Such fabulous nights. (I also met my husband in Burn’s country.) Thanks for the video. Fabulous as ever.

Happy Burns Day! I'm learning so much about Scotland, the land a part of my ancestors leave behind a long time ago. Thank you for showing your beautiful land👍❤️
Ahhhh Ruth you have done it again! I think this is my ALL TIME FAVORITE video you have made. Robert Burns was very dear to this American girl. My grandparent's were from Saltcoats and they immigrated to Detroit in the late 1920's. My Grandfather would recite the toast to the Haggis at all Robert Burns dinners here. My cousins, grew up in Alloway just a stone's throw from that cottage and the oldest was married at a venue that overlooks Brigadoon. I have a photo of myself at age 10 standing on that bridge on my first and only trip there. The icing on the cake, is one of my Mom's cousins claims we are related to him. That I still need to research. Anyhow, I will be sharing this with my Alloway/Ayr cousins and my oldest son who hopes to come to Scotland for the 4th time this year with his family.
Hi Ruth really enjoyed your latest video love the burns history one of his girlfriends highland Mary was reburied here in Greenock cemetery where I live keep up the good work.
Wow! Ruth, what a complete amazing story. Nice visit all kinds of history. I like old church and cemetery. That was old century years. Have a great day friend 🩷 🫶 😊 🏴
Happy Burns Day! I just read that he was a hero poet in the former Soviet Union, and in 1956 they issued a stamp with him on it (a full ten years before the Royal Mail would do the same).
@@ruthaisling It's always a pleasure to watch you explaining Scottish monuments, places and their histories. This Burns special was especially interesting.
Thank you for the education today! I’ll never let January 25 pass now without reading and reciting some Burns. In my town we boast our own literary heritage that includes a mysterious poet who only signed his work with the letter H. He was only a little younger than Robert Burns but his poetry is very much in the style of Burns even though our best information is that he was a Londoner who emigrated here during our frontier era. It’s wonderful how an entire national character can be embodied in the work of one genius. Happy Robert Burns Day to you.
I'm flattered by your likes and hearts. I've been listening to your podcasts again and love the history and that you talk about the hard subjects. I love listening to your voice 💓
A smashing video, Ruth. Kathleen is a force of nature so thanks for bringing her to us. Her passion for Burns is a delight. Hurray for the rainbow. Let's celebrate the women of these stories! N&Nx
That was great, thank you. Again many memories. My mum used to make the haggis for Burn’s Night and my dad did the address to the haggis in the early days of the association here.😊
Thank you. My good friend Pam has invited my son & I to her annual Robert Burns Birthday gathering. Your comments & photos most helpful in understanding her love , & carrying on his tradition, & poems.
The Scottish accent in this video is just next level. And really beautiful. I always wonder if Ruth can speak such a thick accent. Wud love to hear that.
Thanks to your video, I read Robert Burns today and was surprised. It turns out that his poem "For The Sake O’ Somebody" is the leitmotif in the russian cult film "Office Romance". In the 1970s and 1980s more than 250 million people in the USSR knew Burns' lines by heart. Although the translation is very loose, but still Burns is felt. Happy Burns Day!
What a great review of Burns locations in Southern Scotland. I hope to get to Scotland and will definitely try to see some of these sites, especially Dumfries.
Thank you Ruth, wonderful video! I know these areas well, and never tire of learning new things. Very proud to be Scottish, a bonnie lass born and bred in the west coast. xx😆
Happy Burns day Ruth. Nice to see you in Dumfries. Growing up there as you probably know, we are steeped in Burns law. "Robert Burns: A Life" by Ian Macintyre is a great read. There was so much more to him than most folks now. His work collecting and editing folk songs in Scotland was hugely significant.
It was a wonderful idea to theme the video after Robert Burns. I enjoyed seeing the sites and learning more about Burns and his family. The pride in my Scottish ancestry grew once again. Thank you.
Happy (belated) Burns Day, Ruth! My daughter, Georgia, and I are big fans of your channel AND of Robert Burns, so this is a dream episode for us. Thank you so much!!
Excellent Ruth. So Mr. Burns' poetry focused on themes of love, nature, and Scottish identity? Well, that's just like describing you! Your courage and kindness are always very evident in your hard work. Thank you!
Thank you Ruth for another great video ,the amount of times I have been around Ayr gone past Burns' cottage and driven through Dumfries and yet have not gone into the detailed history as you have , it just shows how much we miss that is right under our nose's ,👍.
Hurt my arm this mornin and had to go to hospital for an x-ray, as I was sitting waiting to be seen, the lad next to me says," Fair fae yer honest sonsieface! Great chieftain o' the puddin race!!" I was like, eh?!?!., I turned my head round to the the lady sat on my other side, she said, " ! Wee, sleekit, cow'rin, tim'rous beastie, O, what a panic's in thy breastie!" , As I grabbed the next doc walking past I said, "here mate is this the psychiatric ward?" He says," no this is the burns unit!

You really are such an asset to tourism with all the places you visit and naturally promote with your wonderful commentary and visual capturing skills. So interesting to see all the places and connections Robert Burns had to so many different areas. Certainly a step back in time. Well Done Ruth another impressive vlog

@ruthaisling I enjoy your travels in England and when you were in Europe going to the wwI cemetery and battle ground, you take care and watch out for yourself
Good morning Ruth. Just calling in from Nz. Thanks for this presentation about Robbie Burns. Loved it. Although I had to use subtitles to figure out what the first gentleman was saying, at the beginning of your presentation. It was tough going. And like a lot of NZrs, I have Scottish heritage. My grandmother came from the village of Crieff. Not sure how many kilometers that is from Robbie Burns location. However thank you again for sharing this episode. Take care, and all the very best, from down under.
My favorite of your excellent vlogs. I carried a copy of Robert Burns poems when visiting Scotland in 1997. It was previously owned and had been inscribed to a friend upon their visit to Scotland. I’m going to view it again, now. Thank you, Ruth.
Now I understand what a great author Robert Burns was. His poems have been translated into Norwegian too. Thanks for one more great video that let us learn a lot about your great culture and Interesting country.
Happy Burns Day! Thank you so much for the wonderful tour of the places touched by Robbie Burns. During my time in Scotland I didn’t get around to visiting the Burns’ sites, but it’s on the agenda for the next tour of my adopted second home (Canada being the first)!!

Thanks Ruth, I'm a bit of a poet myself. Maybe we all can recite some Burns in August
I'm flattered by your likes and hearts. I've been listening to your podcasts again and love the history and that you talk about the hard subjects. I love listening to your voice 💓
Thanks! For sharing your adventures. A tip for Ernie your loyal steed.
@@StMyles thank you very much!
A smashing video, Ruth.
Kathleen is a force of nature so thanks for bringing her to us. Her passion for Burns is a delight.
Hurray for the rainbow. Let's celebrate the women of these stories!

That was great, thank you. Again many memories. My mum used to make the haggis for Burn’s Night and my dad did the address to the haggis in the early days of the association here.😊
What a nice memory! Thank you for watching, Pamela! 🙂
Thank you.
My good friend Pam has invited my son & I to her annual Robert Burns Birthday gathering.
Your comments & photos most helpful in understanding her love , & carrying on his tradition, & poems.
Thank you for watching, Janica! I hope you had a nice experience 🙂
The Scottish accent in this video is just next level. And really beautiful. I always wonder if Ruth can speak such a thick accent. Wud love to hear that.
Aha, it's difficult to understand sometimes! Thank you for watching🙂
Wow, that's so interesting, thank you for sharing that and thanks for watching!🙂
Thanks for the interesting video! I love learning new things about your country :)
Hi Ruth ,thanks for this fascinating insight into the history of Robert Burns. 👍👍👍
Thanks for watching, Mark!🙂
Fascinating. An excellent documentary ❤
Glad you enjoyed it!
What a great review of Burns locations in Southern Scotland. I hope to get to Scotland and will definitely try to see some of these sites, especially Dumfries.
I'm glad you found it interesting, thanks for watching, John!🙂
Thank you Ruth, wonderful video! I know these areas well, and never tire of learning new things. Very proud to be Scottish, a bonnie lass born and bred in the west coast. xx😆
Happy Burns day Ruth. Nice to see you in Dumfries. Growing up there as you probably know, we are steeped in Burns law. "Robert Burns: A Life" by Ian Macintyre is a great read. There was so much more to him than most folks now. His work collecting and editing folk songs in Scotland was hugely significant.
Yes exactly, and his work beautifully describes the Scottish culture and wildlife. Thank you for watching! 🙏
It was a wonderful idea to theme the video after Robert Burns. I enjoyed seeing the sites and learning more about Burns and his family. The pride in my Scottish ancestry grew once again. Thank you.
Thanks for watching, I'm glad you enjoyed the video and found it inspiring!🙂
I live in Troon, about 6 or 8 miles away
I thought i knew about the history of the locals so to speak.
Fascinating .

Thank you!
Thank you, that's very kind of you!🙂
Thank you Ruth for another great video ,the amount of times I have been around Ayr gone past Burns' cottage and driven through Dumfries and yet have not gone into the detailed history as you have , it just shows how much we miss that is right under our nose's ,👍.
Yes, it's easy to miss these things when we go about our every day routines, but I'm glad you found the video inspiring, Keith!🙂
It’s wonderful to follow your Robert Burns tour. I love the poet and I’m definitely familiar with Auld Lang Syne. ❤

Fantastic video! Thank you so much! and Happy Burns Day
Auld lang syne. There are Norwegian recordings of the popular song.
@@craigsinclair7864 hahahahahaha, laughing out loud at this!! 😂
LOL!
Genuinely made me LOL with that too! and I'm reading it at 1:15 AM! 🤣
In my hometown, Kearny, New Jersey, USA. The Scottish American Club holds a yearly Burns celebration event.
Oh wow you really do ensure you take us to the most interesting places and talk to the right people to give us as much information regarding the history along with your own research to give us history too. You really are such an asset to tourism with all the places you visit and naturally promote with your wonderful commentary and visual capturing skills. So interesting to see all the places and connections Robert Burns had to so many different areas. Certainly a step back in time. Well Done Ruth another impressive vlog

Happy Burns day Ruth. Only discovered you last week when I was researching Islay and your video about the island popped up . I’m now a convert and absolutely love your videos and the way you present them. And may I say you’re exceptionally easy on the eye.

@ruthaisling I enjoy your travels in England and when you were in Europe going to the wwI cemetery and battle ground, you take care and watch out for yourself
Another very informative and interesting video Ruth! Your videos never fail to entertain.
Wow, that sounds like a special book! Thank you for watching, I'm glad you enjoyed the video!
Ruth! We have learned much about your beautiful land. Thank you for taking us along!
Thank you so much, I'm glad you enjoyed it!

Happy Burns Day! Thank you so much for the wonderful tour of the places touched by Robbie Burns. During my time in Scotland I didn’t get around to visiting the Burns’ sites, but it’s on the agenda for the next tour of my adopted second home (Canada being the first)!!
