JUNKYARD TURBO BBC-MORE BONEYARD BOOST!

- FULL BOOSTED RESULTS. TWIN TURBO GEN 6 454-STOCK SHORT BLOCK.
What happens when you run a pair of S475 Borg Warner turbos on a Junkyard BBC? We grabbed a Gen 6 454 from the junkyard, added ring gap, a Comp cam and springs, then installed a carb and turbos. First we compared EFI to carb, then added the cam and springs, then boost from the two turbos. More Boneyard Boost-It's all here!
Requesting a "Cam, Springs, Boost." shirt to support the channel.
Heck I might buy two.
Dont forget ring gap!
And “c’mon guys like, share, subscribe, ring the bell, and I’ll keep testing”
Me: watches junk you build with little work and lots of power.
My stock 454 truck: (chuckles) I'm in danger.
I wish I could double like the videos, this man is making the quarantine tolerable
Don’t be a slave to the man…if someone tells you to imprison yourself….they are the problem
Im glad you put stock heads back on!.. 👍
Me too!
This engine would be reliable and a blast on the street at this power level. 👍🏻
Would make a great low buck boat motor.
Keeping the iron heads for marine applications is good, especially when running open loop cooling (less chance of galvanic reactions between dissimilar metals.) This open loop cooling also keep engine temps lower as you've got an infinite supply of cool water. Cooler heads = less chance of knock.
Don't do an open system if it sits in water for any length of time, you'll get algae and barnicle buildup inside, even with screens/ filters . And running really low engine temps will lead to more sludging of engine oil.
Don't run open cooling in salt water. Don't leave your boat in the water. Change your oil more often. We do that stuff on lake erie. Good luck brother. Don't hit a log or get a grocery bag stuck on your water inlet.
The torque is crazy on this combo, looks great
The more I watch your videos, the more I find everyone saying what is exactly on my mind. Thank you. 🤘🏻🤘🏻. I cannot wait to watch this channel grow.
Richard you do know you literally have the coolest job on this planet rite ? , get paid to hang out with the Dave and the two Steve's and pork chop and play with speed parts all day . I'm sure you've paid those dues over the years but its awesome to see a fellow engine addict this dedicated . That's cool man . Very cool
I wish I got paid to hang out with those guys-no such luck
Richard Holdener oh shit I didn't realize that hmm 🤔well hey , if you just got a hold of some chloroform and duct tape they'd always be there 😃 lol
In my opinion Man, you just won the entire internet for today!
Cheers 🍻
im always blown away by turbo bbcs
Woooooow your fulfilling everyone’s wish list lol
Thanks for the inspiration and knowledge.. you are cool
Heads up-I know I watched and liked this video years ago and when it ended up in my feed and decided to watch it again, because why not 💁🏼♂️ I noticed thumbs up button was not lit up 🤨 it’s the second video of yours I’ve found that way, so remind folks to ensure the like button might have been reset.
Looks like I am late to the party. I have the gen 6 Mefi HP 502 for my Jet Boat. I was going to a huge 14/71 until today. I watched several of your Videos and now i think I have reconsidered , looks like a twin turbo set up may be in the future.
@ 9psi it's a great low buck street mill.
Please do a Gen7 8.1. I’m getting ready to rebuild my engine in my 2001 suburban and would like to see what can be squeezed out of a normally aspirated plant. The Raylar people have some really nice parts that are way too expensive for what you get. Cleaning the internals on the intake, long tubes, a streetable cam and a nice of set of Dart heads are what I’m kicking around right now. In turned form this pig makes 330HP and 400LBT at the tires. I’d like to see at least 100 more after the rebuild. Thanks for the great videos. Keep them coming.
I'm building one right now good to see my hard work should pay off great job 👍 as always
Richard, if I like a video, I always give it a thumbs up. Ever since you've gotten your act together, I've "liked" *all* your vids. After all, the kind of hard data we are getting from your tests is almost invaluable, and we're getting it for free...
I see as of now this vid has 1,300+ views, and 250 likes. This seems to be about par for the response to your postings from what I've seen before. And yeah, if I were you, I'd be a little disappointed too.
Rightfully, those who are too thoughtless to invest the two seconds required to scroll down and click on the thumbs up icon, should be barred from the benefit of watching in the future. It's too bad there's no way of knowing precisely who those lazy, thoughtless, ingrate freeloaders are...
thnx for the support
Beautiful torque! Imagine that torque and hp in a pickup!
I wanna see him boost a TBI engine.
Now we really need to see the 8.1 litre boneyard motor against this motor. Even carb blow threw
It would burn 3 quarts of oil on the stand.
@@superduty4556 mine never burnt oil it had 250k miles on it
You have the internet, now all you need to do is do your own video
Always great tech information
This is great information. Because there’s also a junkyard gen 7 big block Chevy out there that’s bigger then the gen 6. And I’m sure the same simple cam and ring gap upgrades will apply.
I love this guy learn so much from
His channel especially about power ranges and were power drops off on certain motors in a racer so those things are nice to know
I would love to see this same test but using the AFR 265 heads to see how much torque you could squeeze down low for heavier car or pickup. Power where it counts on a driver! Great videos!!
Hey Richard....YOU HAVE "CRAZIER" IDEAS THAN WHAT YOUVE ALREADY DONE?... Well i just shared this video with about 6 people i gotta see more. Ive learned more watching your vids than anywhere else
Excellent video !
Thanks for the SBC turbo build that gave me a good reference on what to look for
Great content and production Richard. Very cool. Please keep up the great work.
Excellent, big easy power from big blocks
Please include a price list on these budget builds. A idea of the cost determines if I'm going to watch the video or not. Money gets people's attention ! Thank you 👍
Very helpful - giving me all sorts of ideas for the 454 in my squarebody
As ive said for years...big block is king
Love it. I love to see the tests on the old school engines.
Well Mr Richard, thanks again.
Back to the boneyard for a 96 BBC. got the stimulus check! Look out for a Krazy twin turbo iron head, didn't know what to do with my 05 KIA SORENTO SUV. Hate you lol! KEEP em coming Frog out.
I really wish I had discovered your channel before I ever started this hobby… I would have saved so much money that I blew on combinations that never worked
Love cx racing stuff. I have a cx racing intercooler kit on my car and it has been through hell and back and is still solid! It sits low and I have ran it into parking blocks and bent in the bottom and bent the mount number, hit a coyote and still not a single leak and still works.
Very cool!
Hey Rich... Not sure where you want to be as in cubes... Eagle makes an cost conscious 3.766 stroke crank 4340 with a 4.5 bore... should kill some low-end with your 118 cam. should work well Srp makes deep cut flat tops w a 1.065 ch ... a Dart or 1/4 filled 502 block should be sturdy enough. Kinda expensive but love to see the out come. Thanks.
Yes exactly what I wanted to see my 049 heads are getting boost should be awesome
Are you having any work done to them? I am using the same ones and I hear the big valve upgrade and port work take them from decent to really good heads. Mine's a street machine and I'm stil considering the head work. Thoughts?
I have this same 454 in my truck. I think it would be really interesting to see what would happen if you guys put some bosch 210 e85 capable injectors that you can get for like $145 on ebay so its still low budget and throw those in the efi intake manifold and threw some boost at it and see what it would do since all of your boosted 454 videos have all been blow through carb.
great! more bbc stuff
Definitely another classic but dont forget to do the ever abundant gen 1 sbc 350 twin turbo big bang chief, we gotta have it
Yee Haw 🤠
I loved this test!
Thanks much Richard
Hey Richard, Have been telling alot of people about your channel. If the ask me anything that I know you have done a test on. I just tell them to go and watch your videos.
Thanks for all the great and diverse content. Cheers.
Thanks Richard!
I always "like" your videos. I would share them if I had any friends.
Note that @ 5500 RPM, the turbos make ~ the same power as the Vortex except with 2-3# less boost.
Lol... "if I had any friends"
Keep the testing I pushed all the buttons
way to go
Awesome, ring gaps, cam and boost
Referring my brother about 3 days ago about his 355 pulled up your sbc videos for him
I can't subscribe twice, I would if I could. Always great content 👍👍.
Been waiting for this video thanks for taking the time to make great videos.
8:44 tricked me. 😆
Dame, I need some work done on my 454 dually after this. Geezz!
Speaking of heat in the Turbo's, Gale Banks just posted a video on Turbo insulation.
I'd like to see some BB mopar stuff, like what cid to switch to max wedge ports on a street car.
Two words... "Cap Walk"
Great content, very helpful and informative.
I live all your videos, so many options for 800hp when I build my classic truck
Pretty awesome response in power considering stock heads.
Discovered your channel about a week ago and I gotta say, love the channel and great job on covering as many combinations as possible.
One thing I've always been wondering about is how these combinations that you've covered would run on 87 octane, power production, etc. I think it would be interesting to see how well you could make them run on gas that you can get anywhere and everywhere, for those who might want to run something crazy in a daily for instance.
I would like to see that side of the spectrum too. 👌😊👍
That is awesome!! Stock big block with a cam and turbos.
Love it. Just what I’ve been looking for! Keep em coming!!!!!
Nice video
👍 good video
I would love to see you do this with the stock fi intake , modified as much as possible. I think many truck owners would be interested in what this engine will do tuned and boosted with the stock (or 411 swapped) computer to run the rest of the truck.
oh and a run on premium pump gas would be deadly as well. please and thanks.
I'm in the process of putting a single on a 97 with a cam. I started pulling the engine that I will be putting in an 85 1 ton.
Hope you guys are doing good out in Cali, stay safe
Those two S475s would still be a little spendy if you’re going for absolute minimum cost. You used some eBay GT45s a while back, how would they compare? And what is the effect of A/R ratio on engine operation? You didn’t mention the back pressure this time but it was very low with the eBay turbos. Was that a function of A/R ratio? Sheltering in place (in the snow) and living vicariously through this channel-love it!
The GT45s would be the way I would go at this power level
Thanks for filling my wish list. Very informative. I was thinking about diverting cylinder head money into a turbo/supercharger setup but now you have me thinking.
Stock block I would say is the limiter . Same test with a studded 2 bolt main block.
Awesome! I love these videos!
Do this on a 8.1vortec! Idk u may already have and I missed the video. But think it would be a good say "Monster torque" test this 454 vs a 8.1. Around here there hard to find and expensive. Guess that's y most just build a ls or a BBC ,SBC's. Great video btw.
Would love to see short video clips of the dyno pulls.
If you stumble across a late 70s 440 rb or 400 b it would be real interesting to see them run with turbo boost
One spec i would like included in your data, particularly for carbed engines is hot cranking compression. I know its hard to get a definitive number but its important over here in Aus as our pump fuel is not as good as yours in octane and a 100+ degree summer and average fuel and slightly too high dynamic comp equals dead engine.
Thanks, very interseting
Thanks Richard! I have a 462" BBC with around 10.5:1 and iron, closed chamber (100cc), oval port 427 heads that I spin to 7000 in a fairly light drag car. I've been trying to decide what the next step is with it and getting some peer pressure to put some AFR's or similar jewelry on it but the 50 - 70 hp gain for 5k investment doesn't seem worthwhile. This vid helped a lot
turbo is cheap
Great video
Richard Holdner one day I would like to see a 2JZ vs LS (you pick) and see.
$ TO $ build on both to see what can be achieved on a junkyard budget and then I want to see if the legendary 2Jz stock short block can hang together vs one of your LS builds you have already completed.
Lots of 2jz fan boys (good reason) but can it be built to compete with the Ls platform $ for $.
Another Gem would be the Berra but you would be hard pressed to find them in an American Junk Yard.
454 is a HEAVY bottom end. I would bet a stock 454 short block could take 1500+ hp with insane tourqe.
Thanks Richard!!! Awesome comment just keeps coming!!!!! You the man!!
I like (I mean love) 2JZ motors, but lots more expensive, smaller displacement and won't do what an LS will. I would love for someone to come to the dyno with a stock bottom end 2JZ (stoclk block, crank, rods pistons and rings) and make 1543 hp. Ill pay for the dyno time!
@@richardholdener1727 hahahahahahaha challenge has been placed..... any takers?
Ohh hell yeah!!
You dropped so many videos I can’t even keep up. You need to change your name to Richard “the beast” holdener
aka BEASTMASTER
Very informative
Sweet testing thx
Love the video’s keep up the good work
1 recommendation for these test since their budget related maybe talk about prices. I know u cant get exact bc of what deals u find and what areas people are from so prices vary. But just a general estimate would be cool too add. Say this 454 made 450 hp for less than 2500 bucks.
Thanks again for all this valuable research
Ever run INCON turbos? Dave Inall was the man
Richard, how about a junkyard AMC/Jeep 360 with boost in a future video.
I wish I could find one of those in the yard
I have one I would give you. Just needs a rebuild
don't know of you'll do it, but would love to see diesel testing...5.9, also the unpopular 6.5 (what it can take before breaking) turbo, compound turbo, water meth injection, propane injection etc....
Impressive numbers!
I like this test with the iron heads because I can never afford aluminum heads
This test was with the aluminum heads after the first run.
@@EGGINFOOLS Then he went back to iron for the turbo test.
@@Joshie2256 Damn. I must have missed that.
no alum heads on this test
@@Joshie2256 I realized what I did. Lol. I watched this back to back with the sbc video he just made and got them mixed up.
This is great ive got one of these in my garage. I think a single s480 is in its future.
If you go to Garretts website and make an account, it takes seconds, they have a turbo calculator. Its pretty handy even if your only spit balling ideas.
I'm hooked on this channel 😎
Nice test! Redeemed the big block in my opinion
Don't forget the third reason to drop a set of aluminum heads on a big block.
Weight savings.
Those iron big blocks weigh a ton.
no one should have to lift BBC iron heads
I would love to see the 5.0 HEAD test you were talking about.. 👍
Makes me want to do this to my 99k2500
I need this in my RV
Spin it up too high, the blow thru, will be blowing rods through the oil pan! I have a 94 , 454 with airgap rpm intake, and long tube headers, I was thinking about boost! So completely stock with a intake, it could get interesting! Especially with a cam upgrade, not bad!
it runs fine to 6500
Wait what? I just blew my rods on a 5.3 lol
Great video gt45 turbo with iron head bbc let's see how that works rich
go look at the single or dual GT45 videos
Richard I've always to wanted see how much of a difference 180 degree headers make in the mid range torque
You know if you did stepped rpm steady state holds you could eliminate those temp variables of course you would probably go thru a lot more motors and the big bang power levels would be a lot lower. The carnage footage would be internet gold though!!! lol
