  • Alfred Blalock (1899-1964), a cardiologist (therefore, self-confident to the point of arrogance), leaves Vanderbilt for Johns Hopkins taking with him his lab technician, Vivien Thomas (1910-1985). Thomas, an African-American without a college degree, is a gifted mechanic and tool-maker with hands splendidly adept at surgery. In 1941, Blalock and Thomas take on the challenge of blue babies and invent bypass surgery. After trials on dogs, their first patient is baby Eileen, sure to die without the surgery. In defiance of custom and Jim Crow, Blalock brings Thomas into the surgery to advise him, but when Life Magazine and kudos come, Thomas is excluded. Will he receive his due?

The fact remains that Dr Thomas , through his humility, used the gifts GOD gave him, to save lives and teach other doctors to save more lives. This is a true blessing .

I'm in awe of Dr. Thomas. The way that man handled himself with such grace, poise, and humility, in and out of that operating room, despite everything he had been through, was just incredible (for lack of a better term). Everyone has a heart, but his was truly Something The Lord Made. Rest peacefully, Dr. Thomas, and thank you. It's a shame we didn't give you your flowers when it actually counted.

Yes, Dr Thomas was an amazing man, and so many of you keep mentioning about it being a shame that he did not get his flowers 💐 when alive, Guess what -many special people are not concerned about recognition from the World nor man’s adulation!!! Don’t you all get it??? That’s why he was able to focus and do exactly what the Lord had purposed & planned for him & he needed the other doctor- they were joined together for the for the greater good - both men admired each other & knew together they would solve the surgical problem in order to help those who needed it! Many lives were changed for the better due to these two men that made it their mission to stick with it through thick & thin- all the while dealing with the attacks of the devil, who is always out to steal, kill & destroy every good thing the LORD God gives us! Dr Thomas is enjoying his reward in Heaven! And a life of obedience to the LORD and following Jesus and His teachings & Word is the best each of us can do!

It's obvious to have compassion for Dr. Thomas. I believe Dr. Blalock was a good man, and Dr. Thomas would not have completed his mission on Earth without Dr. Blalock. They were soul mates and they loved each other. This was their journey. It's not about recognition. It was about saving lives. God saw fit to exalt Dr. Thomas when the time was perfect and profound. Bless them both. They couldn't have done anything without each other.

When people who behave and speak as if they deeply care and are respectful and grateful but refuse to become an activist for those who need it, it’s *so difficult and frustrating* to live with!

That tragedy pales in comparison to the synergistic work he & Dr Blaylock accomplished as they collaborated to save the lives of babies. Blaylock, while a brilliant man himself, couldn’t have done it alone.
As Joseph said in Scripture “what you meant for evil, God meant for good.” God’s Hand was on Vivien Thomas in a mighty way. V. Thomas actually was a brilliant surgeon; he taught others there at John’s Hopkins & in doing so, accomplished far more than a single Dr/surgeon could have.

When l happened on this movie l had no idea that this is what it was all about. Also that there was a Mr Thomas working along side Dr Blaylock. And l also see why now. l am also very glad and proud they finally recognized Mr Thomas for his hard work. I believe he was the smart on who really perfected heart surgery. My cousin (the eldest of the large gang of us) was the first to survive this surgery beyond a year, then two and so on. He lived to be in his early thirties, married and had two children. He had numerous follow up surgeries and lived his life without ribs on the left side. (While it isn't shown in the film, the surgical procedure included the removal of the majority of the left rib cage.) His surgery took place about 8 years before I was born, but I remember looking through all of the articles from our local newspaper which showed me what a major event this was. I watched the film with deeply invested emotion, purchased the DVD and made certain my grown children viewed it, as well. My mother had open heart surgery in her eighties and all I could think of while sitting in the waiting room, was how my cousin had been a part of paving the way.

Reminds me of my dad. Had just about a sixth grade education; started out as janitor at a facility that makes (let’s say body parts) He’s a very skilled man - he built his own home. Precision was his pet peeve. He over heard coworkers one day trying to decide the right measurement to complete a task. He offered his two two cents. They were amazed. He was promoted to the tool room and later an A-grade mold maker; a position filled with trained craftsman.
I said to him: somebody is out there who has taken credit for that and made lots of $$$ off of what you showed them. They asked him if he were some kind of doctor.
“It’s never too late for a shower of rain.” It was grand to see him get the recognition.

Even after acknowledging him they made his image within the picture smaller than the other pictures of medical professionals and intentionally hung it on a wall blocked constantly by an opening door. A protest was made to have it relocated to an honorable position. They initially tried to hang it within a lab or research area but those who had trained under Vivian Thomas pressed hard against the action.

When everyone looks past color and open their eyes only then will one truly see what the Lord has made. Dr Vivien is an inspiration to me. Inspite of the obstacles and setbacks he continued to move forward doing the Lords work with such poise grace and class. He did what he had to do so that he could do what he really wanted to do. He wanted to save lives and that's what he did. It brought tears to my eyes that they didnt acknowledge him or give him his flowers when he really would've appreciated it the most. Dr Vivien Thomas thank you. ❤

It’s unfortunate that Dr. Blalock took advantage of his natural born intelligence, by keeping him in the lab, and not encouraging him to go onto medical school, as he had intended to do. Few days ago, my daughter's boyfriend (34 years old) a hardworking man raised with great stress alongside with his father, whose own outlook on his son was too demanding according to his sisters... with that said a few days ago, he was taken to the hospital with unbearable stomach pains. Yesterday he went thru 7 hours of surgery - the aftermath with him having to wear a colostomy bag for his waste for up to six months to a year... thereafter to undergo the taking off the colostomy bag to repair his colon into its' natural process. His life has been completely altered - he was a skilled construction worker. I have been told the recovery can be up to a few months and then he can do his work as before. It IS AMAZING TODAY WHAT SURGEONS CAN DO... however, this man's road ahead will be difficult as his stress is emotionally tied to his father's expectations. Again, what the doctor's had to do to get the perforation in his stomach closed for what it was doing to his body is amazing. Prayers for his recovery both in is mind and heart is now part of the recovery.
