I have a theory, Yan-kun was actually adopted by Ayano's parents because of Ayano's apathetic nature, Ayano's father became desperate and did whatever it took for Ayano to become a normal kid like the rest. Little did he know that Yan-kun was also apathetic by nature just like Ayano but when he had met Ayano everything had change for him. He had fallen in love with her but he didn't realize it yet since he was only a child back then so in his confusion he tried to meddle with Ayano and the more time he spent with her the more he began to feel curious about Ayano's existence and why he felt this way about her so he did whatever it took to get her attention whether it'd be brawling it out with her, stealing her precious toys or something else entirely. Ayano isn't usually the type to get mad but for once her in life she finally felt the feeling of annoyance because of Yan-kun and over the years the cycle would only continue. But despite their quarrels, Ayano's father felt relieved because although Ayano wasn't exactly normal just yet, he could tell that Ayano was growing more emotionally stable because of Yan-kun. Even then Yan-kun would look after her like a big brother would and even when he sees the worst parts of Ayano like the time she killed that cat, he never felt scared and did whatever he could to help her. ( In this case he buried the cat for her. ) But Ayano didn't notice this herself since just the thought of Yan-kun made her irritated so she took him for granted. While Yan-kun on the other hand ultimately realized that he fell in love with her and learned to enjoy annoying Ayano so he only continued doing so as they grew older. But Ayano finally felt fed up with Yan-kun's antics and reprimanded him for his actions, admitted that just the thought of him disgusted her and because of that their relationship grew apart. Yan-kun was heartbroken and tried to think of ways to make Ayano at least be tolerant of him but nothing came up. During their time apart Ayano met Taro and came to an epiphany and thought that he was the one she was looking for all this time. Ayano became obsessed to the point she was willing to kill anyone who got in her way. Yan-kun knew she would have gotten in trouble if she went on a killing streak herself so in his twisted way of thinking he thought of eliminating her rivals for her instead as a way to make amends with her. When Ayano knew of this she thought that Yan-kun did this in an attempt to steal Taro away from her and this only planted her hatred towards Yan-kun even deeper. Ayano had enough of it all and decided to just brawl it out just like when they were kids but this time it was more serious and dangerous. Inevitably Yan-kun had won the battle since he was a lot stronger than her but he thought that this was just getting out of hand and so he decided he would do something about it. Which would be confronting Taro himself, he tried to find ways to persuade Taro into liking Ayano which eventually worked. As Christmas Eve was nearing he thought of making Ayano a scarf as a celebratory gift for her but Ayano thought he was making it for Taro so when she thought that Yan-kun was sleeping she tore the scarf apart which broke Yan-kun's heart even more so he just forced himself to sleep through it which did work in the end but his negative feelings began manifesting into his dreams and so he unintentionally let his feelings out by talking in his sleep. When Ayano suddenly heard Yan-kun whimpering, curiousity got the best of her and as she approached his bed, she heard Yan-kun's confession of love for her which caught her by surprise and she felt her heart skip a bit for some reason which she found strange since she thought she was already in love with Taro. Ayano didn't know what to think so she just decided to go to sleep. The next day Yan-kun finally told Ayano that he did all of those things for her, just so she can be with Taro and be happy. Ayano never felt so confused in her entire life and it felt like she was dreaming at that moment, for the first time they laughed and realized how ridiculous they were being. Yan-kun was finally able to fix his relationship with Ayano and when Ayano confessed her feelings for Taro, he accepted it. Christmas Eve finally came, Ayano, Taro, Yan-kun and their friends decided to celebrate Christmas together which led them to look back at how they ended up this way, and thinking back on it they couldn't help but laugh. Yan-kun opens up to Ayano about a promise he made with their mother that required him to leave the country once school starts up again and when Ayano heard this, a part of her heart was breaking again, she didn't know why. When the time for Yan-kun's departure came, Ayano was left at school with Taro, she looks back at Taro and realizes how empty her heart is when she's with him, then she started contemplating as to why that is and when the thought of Yan-kun leaving her behind came to mind, she just couldn't take it anymore. She broke up with Taro and confessed she was in love with Yan-kun. She knew she had limited amount of time so she ran as fast as she could to reach Yan-kun in time. She finally made it and called out to Yan-kun, he was confused as to why she was there and when Ayano tells him how she truly felt, everything just didn't make sense for him but one kiss told him everything he needed to know and so they found comfort in one another and went on a journey together. They weren't sure where their story together was going to lead them but if there's one thing they're sure of is that they felt contented at that moment in time and to them nothing else really mattered.
