- The Beatles Story I Guarantee You've Never Heard Before!
Lionel Barry Agar created a painting called "The Trojan Horse" in the early 1980s, that has a fascinating story that's never been told, which goes right to the heart of the Beatles Apple Corps.

Fantastic story Andrew, have never seen this painting and definitely never heard the story behind it. Would love to own the print for sure. What a talented artist, so sorry Apple did not honor what they agreed upon. The good thing is the surviving Beatles did get to see it. So glad you were lucky enough to receive one. Thank you for sharing this wonderful story. Take care!
Fascinating Andrew..the second I saw this image. I thought Anthology without knowing what you were going to say. It's a great painting and seems a little silly by apple not to explore possibilities to get the image into the hands of fans. I'm sure it would sell like hotcakes.
Fascinating story! Thanks to Andrew and Lionel for sharing it. I hate to say it, but as soon as I heard the painting was sold without getting the merchandising deal settled, I knew exactly what was going to happen. It's way to easy for Apple and the Beatles to let such a deal just slide. Too bad for Lionel and the rest of us!
Thanks Andrew. A great story and a wonderful painting. I really hope Lionel gets the compensation and recognition he deserves. I hope someone who has the power to make that happen is watching these videos.
I have a copy of the print I picked up for free also in Lionel's home city, loved the story behind it!
I definitely didn’t know about this. I agree that it may have inspired the art work for Anthology, but as fans, we can only speculate. I was born in September of 1979, but have been listening to The Beatles all of my life. I know things that many people who were alive during the days of The Beatles, so learning more is always fun for me.
Brilliant. Appreciate the story of this unique painting... it is very special indeed.
Wow what an amazing piece of art, I have to be honest though, if that painting was on my wall, I don't think I would ever get anything done lol. I would constantly be gazing at it. It's very fitting that Sgt. Pepper is in the middle, I've always felt that was a time of great transformation for The Beatles, so many great details. Fascinating video and story, Andrew 🎸
Fabulous painting, fabulous story-telling but a really sad conclusion. I hope one day this can be resolved as there cant be many fans who wouldn't want a print off that
Wow! I have a copy of this on my wall, given to me many years ago by my sister in York. I didn’t know the history of it though.
Great story Andrew! When I first saw the painting, I immediately thought of the Anthology covers. I think you're spot on there.
Thank you for sharing this incredible story that needed to be told, Andrew! I’ve been looking closely and studying the painting! Well told, old sport!
Great video. Great story. Let's hope Lionel can get this picture out there. It's brilliant and deserves more recognition. Thanks, Andrew, for letting us all know about this ❤
Hello Andrew! I recently put the Anthology 1,2 &3 original promo posters together on my wall to form the complete image-so very cool! What strikes me 'bout the poster you have featured is how similar it is to an official Anthology promo poster I purchased at a thrift store. Framed 13"x39" with the exact same concept: Left to right early days to later days, b&w into color. No coincidence-someone at Apple copied the concept 'n marketed it for the Anthology series. I've never seen another copy of this particular poster.
Great video! Very interesting, indeed. Honestly, I wouldn't have objected to this painting being used as the cover for the 3 Anthology releases. It's a fantastic painting! Would love to see it being merchandised and buy it. I think it would be a strong seller for legions of Beatles fans. Take care, Andrew. Keep the great stuff flowing!
Hi Andrew, another fascinating Beatles story - thanks bringing this to light. The similarity to the Anthology art concept surely can’t be a coincidence - the surviving Beatles clearly loved the painting having spent a whole afternoon enjoying it. Hope that Lionel gets his dues! Cheers Matt
This is the best painting with great images of the Beatles and looks so good. And is such a large size. Fantastic.
Excellent video. Come on Apple! What are you thinking..? Give this man his due. He created this beautiful work of art - and you are treating him so very poorly. This magnificent piece of artwork deserves to be SEEN... and many, nany Beatles fans who would love to own a copy of it - deserve to be able to buy one.
Fantastic video as always Andrew! Very interesting story, I would love to own a print of the artwork but I doubt itll ever happen. Thanks for making the video because i would have never have heard of or seen this work of art if it wasnt for you
Thanks Andrew 👍 Very enjoyable video.
It's a truly wonderful painting, which I DID instantly recognise from the book you showed. As a lover of art, and part-time artist myself, I have always admired this! Terrific background story, but quite sad. This definitely deserves to be marketed and should be hanging in everyone's Beatles room! It actually inspired me to do my own Beatles drawing in a similar vein, to pass time years ago while I was serving time inside for a stint.
Thanks again! 👍
That was one of the neatest story's I've ever heard about The Beatles
Awesome painting and fantastic story. Me and my daughter love our copy.
Hey Andrew, that's an amazing story. I'm glad you were given a copy of it. That needs to be framed ASAP. Pity Apple have stonewalled and effectively buried the painting. There's so much marketing potential with it. I for one would buy a poster or print of it. You're right, never heard this story before nor had I seen that artwork. Cheers mate 😊👍
Wonderful video and great painting it’s such a shame the artist didn’t manage to merchandise the painting through Apple I hope he got a good price for it thought . Your reasoning about the painting influencing the anthology album covers makes sense. Well done Andrew really interesting story
I got a free poster of this today when I bought a beetles cd and it had a stamp on the back telling you to watch this video. Worth it
Thanks for watching! That's a stamp that the painter, Lionel, made shortly after I made this video 🙂
it was cool nothing like a free poster and a video to watch
Pretty cool! Thanks for sharing.
Completely unrelated but at 3:58 your Velvet Underground album had the banana sticker in the right location and then 10 seconds later at 4:08 the banana's fallen down
And now it won't stick back on at all!
Fascinating and sad story of how miserable the huge Beatles machine can be when it wants to.
The right hand of that printing was used as the cover of Golden Beatles lp on Silouette records if im not mistaking
I love the “falling banana”!
I wondered how long before someone noticed! 😀
I don't get it. If he didn't sell the copyright when he sold the painting, what is there to prevent him from marketing and selling prints through any publisher or poster outlet?
Great story Andrew and a very nice thing for you to do for the gent. I hope it works out for him.
Fascinating, outstanding, thank you, Andrew 👏
If he owns the copyright, he has the right to merchandise it, unless he signed an agreement not to do so.
MINDBLOWING!!!!! Thought I'd heard ALL The Beatles Stories. I was wrong!!!
Wow it’s fantastic! So sad it’s unlikely to be on sale to fans! It would be great on wall between speakers! Imagine the fun listening to the Beatles and looking at this great artwork!Maybe one day! Thanks for this fascinating tale and to at least see this at least!
Very informative and at the same time extremely fascinating tinged with sadness and happiness simultaneously and as always very well put together as all your videos are.....Kudos to you Andrew and I am sure that every single Beatle fan will be intrigued by your research which is second to none........Fantastic, a truly brilliant video
Thanks Philip 🙂👍
That’s a brilliant story Andrew! I remember getting The Art Of The Beatles book for Christmas when I was about 9. I spent hours gazing at that picture!
I also remember the ‘Got Back’ picture which was featured on the front page of one of the tabloids and seeing George and Ringo holding their camcorders. This was the shot that announced they were reforming. Bumper pay day for the photographer there! As you said, nice work if you can get it!
Cheers Dom, I tried searching for the "Get Back" photo so I could include it in the video but couldn't find it anywhere, would love to be able to track it down on Google!
I guess this is it? images.app.goo.gl/7zsWVtrwFQxDXAnE9
@@AndrewDixonMusic I can’t open the link, but I’ve messaged it to you😊👍🏻
Great story and painting! And I love the dark horse hoody.
Great video, Andrew! These are the types of different and enthralling videos I enjoy watching. Keep them coming.
Thanks! I have plenty more of them available 😉
@@AndrewDixonMusic I’ve watched many of your others over the years. Always interesting.
Great story, Andrew ❤️
Fascinating detail,
What a fantastic story. Pity we can't buy it yet!!! Seen it on the Internet.
I've always thought Derek & Neil were very protective of their 'group'. Especially Neil, because he's been there from the Start. Thanks for telling the stories about this brilliant picture.
It was very sad that Neil & Derek are no longer with us. Makes you wonder who's actually running the Company.
P.s. Half-Speed RED ROSE SPEEDWAY coming. And a box-set of EPs from John's last album.
And a double album from Ringo.
Smell The Rose's.
Thanks for the video
Great video Andrew! After about four minutes the peel comes off your VU & Nico album. Meaning?
Great story, wonderful print - would love to buy one. I also like the guitar neck / fretboard lamp in the background.
Thanks! There's a story behind that lamp also: ruclips.net/video/jYiQOGPJ-EQ/видео.html
Great painting, I still have the Art of The Beatles book from the 80s. The attention to detail is incredible and you could almost believe they were photos used instead of painting. The small details are good like 4 apples in the top right hand corner for each of their first solo albums.
Ditto. Same for me.
Did you go attend the exhibition & pick up the free catalog or did you buy the hard back book Art of the Beatles.
@@BeatleJohn813 missed the exhibition unfortunately but got the book (and the official catalogue in fact later)
@@anthonycraig1458 you missed a fantastic exhibition , I went many times after the private view , before it was opened to the public
Great detective work. Fascinating tale!
Lovely sorry there Andrew. Thanks for bringing this to us
If Lionel owns COPYRIGHT then imo Apple has ZERO say in whether he can reproduce and sell copies. He needs to get himself a lawyer immediately and sue!
The lower right of this painting was used for an edition of Songs From The Past CDs Vol. 1-5.
Sounds like TTH was purchased by Apple round the same time as early talk of The Long And Winding Road' (what would become the Anthology), they probably bought the concept more than the actual painting, then kept it commercially hidden until they could roll out a more 'in-house' version
Andrew got the Black Market Beatles print
Amazing story! I never saw the book, but I do have an '80's-era interview LP (not Apple-sanctioned) called "The Golden Beatles" which uses this painting across its front and back cover (not a gatefold, sadly). I also had an unofficial '90's 8 CD-Rom mp3 collection that separated the art into 8 pieces (one for each CD cover). Surely, both of these used the book cover as a reference...? So nice to finally hear the history behind what is arguably the finest Beatles collage ever made. My best to you, the artist, and his family, and I hope to someday see *official* copies of this painting on many fans' walls (including mine, of course) sooner than later.
Seems to be very inspired by Klaus Voormann's 1966 Revolver Album Cover for a start.
👍👍 In line with the original ethos of Apple I trust and hope they will do the right thing with this artwork and its talented creator.
I couldn’t help but notice the banana on your VU cover unpeeled at some point during the video 😄
Paul made wings hence "fly away paul"
Thanks for sharing that story. I’m just really confused why Apple won’t grant him those licensing rights. Hopefully this will help him out in someway.
220 images of The Beatles in one painting is no bad thing!
Sad story, but the Beatles as artist should be more open to helping this fellow artist with his wishes and work. Sad, Sad, Truly Sad. Thank you for bring this information to us. Great work on your part. Blessings !
Interesting story
About 4:00 in, the banana falls off the cover of the Velvet Underwear album.
Fascinating story and terrific photo. If you go to Flickr they have that photo in segment to see up close. The first time you held the photo I did think of the Anthology photo so there must be something to what you said, to be true.
I have a copy of the Beatles art book, so I am familiar with painting but have never looked at it forensic detail..
Ah the banana fell out! Nice touch
Wogan very much missed I loved the art print poster its something. I would love to put on the wall loved. Interesting. Facts .thanks
Andrew, i have to say i do have a copy of this, infact i was given 2 for doin some work at a mans house and told me this story behind it, now i know!!!
I would say yes, hard to miss, klaus vorman anthology.
I have a large wall poster of the Beatles from, what I believe is, the last photo session. They are standing in front of the doors of, I think, George's house. It's similar to the Hey Jude/Again cover, but much more wide than tall. I'd liked to see the Trojan Horse in a similar size. Edit: In front of Tittenhurst, John and Yoko's home.
I have the Art of the Beatles book so your video was of great interest plus the fact its York where the artist is from.So i,m not the only York Beatle fan! i discover .Hope your well cheers
Thanks, never heard about this ! The similarities between the painting and Klaus Voorman work are too obvious to be coincidental, I think
How about doing something on the ”Get Back (Rooftop Performace)” Album from 2022? Would love hearing your oppinion on it.
I want my personal items back
Personal items are OK as a hobby but you'll not make a living from them.
This story paints a bad picture of Apple. But there are quite a few music holding companies from the 1960s where if all their assets were known, and their dealings with the artists who created those assets were on the public record then we might doubt their 60s idealism based on their 21st century apathy. I doubt anyone knows all the masters and other creative material that Allen Klein's ABKO exclusively owns and hoards. Their known asset is all the Decca recordings of The Rolling Stones. Another odd player in the music business with who-knows-what-that-they-won't-release is The Beach Boys Brother Records Inc. Mike Love was the CEO, Irving Azoff is probably that now. It owns everything recorded by The Beach Boys after 'Good Vibrations'. Last but not least, in imitation of Apple, Frank Zappa signed many artists to Straight Records 1968-73. Those that are still living can neither license their old work nor get Straight to rerelease it. I wonder what we would think if we knew what the assets of Apple, Straight Records, ABKO and Brother Records Inc etc are. What would we think if we learned how these holding companies like to hide that they have these assets from a public, who if they knew about them would appreciate theses assets being legally available...
Andrew this video is so interesting, the art is amazing, fascinating, the story behind this fabulous piece, is more than I can say, it’s sad that Lionel couldn’t get the to agree to merchandise this painting, and now it’s there for no one to see, I’m sure the Beatles and Klaus used it for inspiration into the anthology covers,I wish could have gotten more recognition for his great work, being an artist I know, one thing Andrew I wish I could get a print for my collection, Lionel is a great artist, the work, the detail, all amazing, well Andrew My Friend, TakeCare, BeSafe, and Bless You,, Steve
Very interesting story.
As soon as I saw the print I thought of Anthology.
Unfortunately, I don't believe it was a coincidence of the similarity and because of that, they probably will never license the painting.
They got a free idea from the painting and that's all it will ever be.
Hey Andrew, I have searched for the beatles anthology tv series on dvd or blu ray but i haven't found it yet, do you know were i can get it? (Great video by the way)
Hi Mathias, it's never been officially released on Blu-ray, but the DVD has been around for 20 years, eBay might be your best bet if you can't find it new.
Thanks Andrew, Appreciate it a lot 🙏
Today i got my copy for a really good price, i just want to say thank yo, i am very grateful ❤
Great story mate!, had me gripped, let’s hope Apple pull their fingers out!
Incidentally, are you or any of your viewers interested in The Kinks Muswell Hillbillies/Everybody’s In Showbiz box set? 6 coloured vinyl, 4 CDs, Blu ray, book….50 quid on the kinks website, it’s usually well over 100.
Literally just ordered it 10 minutes ago!! Saw the SDE site advertise the deal.
@@AndrewDixonMusic ahh great stuff! Yes that’s how I heard about it. Quite the bargain!
Speaking of art, I noticed the banana peel on the Velvet Underground and Nico album behind you came off after a while. Ha
And now it won't stick back on!
First time I saw the Anthology covers I had the same thought, that the design was inspired by this painting. Although to be fair, Agar in turn must have been inspired by Voormann's Revolver cover. It is surprising Apple hasn't merchandised this yet, since they already have a plethora of prints on the official merch site.
It may be something that Neil and Derek in particular knew about and when they passed away perhaps was forgotten about.
What a great story Andrew. I bet Andrew from Parlogram Auctions is dead jealous. Come on Apple 🍏 do the right thing for Lionel.
I can really see your point about the Anthology artwork being inspired by this painting, so sad we cannot own a copy ourselves, major miss by Apple. Why are they always so protective of such things. Great video on a totally unexpected subject. You better put it on a wall away from the camera or Apple will be after you!
Great story! I think Lionel should not've sold the painting at all unless a merchandising deal came with it.
What a fantastic story , That would be a great poster to have professionally matted and framed and put right upon my Beatle Wall !! Thanks for sharing Andrew, Cheers ...
There are many stories and artifacts the public has and never will see. Unless your privy with insiders
A pity John didn't get to see it.He would have appreciated it,definitely.
I'd buy a print and have it framed, if could
Andrew: Great story. I don't know the copyright laws in the UK, but I think Lionel might want to contact an attorney. If there was only a handshake deal, then he probably has as much right to reproduce the painting as Apple does to tell him not to. Unless there was a signed contract that clarifies "usage" versus "ownership of the painting," he may in fact, already have the right to reproduce it. Obviously, I'm not an attorney and don't know the details. Perhaps he's already investigated this. Regardless, it's a pretty amazing work-not only for the time involved, but considering it was one of his very first paintings!
Thanks, I don't know the legal ins and Outs of how this would all work, and I'm very keen to not get involved or express an opinion that might get me in to trouble! 😉
@@AndrewDixonMusic I understand. We'll just hope that it all works out for the best for all involved.
It seems to be a case of if Apple Corps can't profit exclusively from the painting through merchandising then they are stopping the artist from profiting too. I think Apple wanted the copyright to go along with their acquisition of the painting. Because they failed to get it they are being petulant and petty instead. Pretty sad.
Hi Andrew , what a very interesting story from start to finish , I recall seeing that picture at the art of the Beatles exhibition , my Father & myself where at the private view at the walker art gallery , we where invited by Mike evens a friend of the family , and the exhibition was opened by Cynthia Lennon. , who my father happened to know quit well , due to the fact he was one of her Art tutors , he was also one of John Lennon’s tutors as well . I also brought the book called art of the Beatles & I also have the catalog of it as well , which is signed by Cynthia Lennon .
It’s a pity you can’t buy a copy of this picture , I would definitely frame it , it would take pride of place in my lounge .
Thanks again Andrew for a educational lesson on this fabulous picture
Thanks John for some nice additional info to the story, didn't know Cynthia had opened the exhibition!

4 . Ringo ( Deluxe. Edition )
5. Rubber soul

The executives at Apple are labouring under a misapprehension. They believe that the heroes of "Yellow Submarine" were the Blue Meanies.
WOW!!!!!
Wow, want a copy!!!!
Would be great if that could happen legitimately one day!
Great video. If you're into the Beatles and records you should check out The Musical Box record shop in Liverpool. A 75 year old record shop that sold to the likes of the Beatles back in the day, you'll love it.
Not seen that when I've been, whereabouts is it?
@@AndrewDixonMusic it's about 5 minute drive from city centre, check it out on their socials it's an absolute gold mine especially for Beatles stuff!
Maybe Mr Agar could "Give" copies to us...with appropriate gratuity welcome?
Frankfurt School anyone?
"Fly away Peter and fly away Paul?" Yes, because they both died. Paul died on 9/11/66 and Billy Shears (William Campbell) has been his replacement since. Look at "Rubber Soul" then "Sgt. Pepper" Those are two different Pauls.
Research and study it. Read "The Memoirs of Billy Shears"
This is absolute nonsense.
Apple bought it, to take it off the Market. Which is exactly what has happened
I bet the anthology cover is based on the painting
