Clio Williams have already gone up through the roof ,trust me I used to own one and believe me you've missed the boat if you think you'll pick up a bargain now.
When I had a lesser Clio, I remember visiting the dealership in East Yorkshire, finding a Clio Williams in the showroom awaiting it's new owner. The dealer principal told me the new owner was 78 years old, but also an ex-Spitfire pilot, who wanted "the last thrill of his life"... Sir, who ever you were, I hope you enjoyed that iconic car as much as I was envious of you!
Owned a 1993 Williams for 12 years.... what a car.... the best I ever had....in my opinion even better than the one I have now, a GTI 40 yrs edition. ..😭😭😭
I had the privilege of owning a Williams 2 for 7 years and it was a pleasure hands down the best sports car I have ever owned every drive was an experience and it got so much attention!
Nothing can beat the price/practicality/fun ratio of a humble hot hatch. Add to that a banging paint, gold alloys an homologation special pedigree and you have a cool car amongst cool cars.
A fantastic series - please keep this up. I also loved the series Carfection did on M3s. Could we have one on M5s? 🙏🏻 If I was being greedy I’d say this video would’ve been better if it was a little longer!
When I was younger I couldn’t afford/ get insurance cover on a 205GTi, Clio Williams/16v, or a Golf Gti now I’m heading towards 50 I can afford the insurance but not the cars 😅🙄 times change but to ability to own one doesn’t.
As others have commented, this seems an odd choice to me, as they've already gone up a lot. I think it's probably the 172/182 that's the Clio to buy, though they have already started increasing in value
172/182s are actually getting more and more difficult to find now, and prices are definitely starting to rise. Used to be easy to find one for £1500 - £3000 now they are more. Would be nice if the 200s will go up in value in the future, that's what I chose to buy (not that I plan to sell anytime soon and I didn't buy it thinking it would go up)
I had a friend with a WIlliams Clio a loooong time ago. He took me for a spirited spin in a car park and I giggled like a school girl - at the time I owned a Vauxhall Nova Antibes with a leaky sunroof. I've had the great privilege to drive in some fairly exotic cars since that tender age, and I can honestly say that the little Renault (closely followed by my girlfiriends Renault 5 in the late 90's) are still among the very best cars I've ever experienced.
Clio Williams - 100% cool 😎👍. Back when hot hatches didn't need masses of horsepower/weight to have fun :). Also I love 0:46, that editing :). Great work Henry and Carfection ;)
Would really love to see Henry get behind the wheel of an SiR Civic, also built as Homologation specials, they had 160hp in 1990 and 170hp by 1993, from only 1.6 litres. They were also made in far larger numbers, in the 10s of thousands, rather than just a few thousand. They were sold in the UK and Europe, with slightly less hp as the VTi, and the Japanese market models have been appearing in the UK as used imports for a few years now.
For sure. But I think the DC2 & DC5 integras are worth a visit too as values for these are set to go even higher, maybe a euro r too? Lots of interesting Hondas out there.
Williams have been commanding good money for some time. If we’re talking Clios, I bought a good condition 182 Trophy with 100k miles on for £7500 6 months ago. Low mileage original cars are already selling for over £20k and the market is still rising, with cheaper cars being dragged ever higher. Good news for me as I still get to drive and enjoy it without worrying about the value disappearing. Grab one whilst you still can, unbelievable fun on a B road.
Wow! What is the Trophy like? I almost got a 182 (cup or Trophy, I would have been happy with a cup still I'm sure) but ended up getting a 200 FF instead and absolutely LOVE it! I was so torn between a 200 or a 182 (don't like the 197 that much and 182>172 imo ) and part of me still isn't sure if I would prefer a 182, but I suspect the 200 is nicer to live with even if it is stiff as anything and bounces me out of my seat over some bumps haha. I've done 2k miles in 2 months of ownership so I care about the interior and stuff like that a bit. The main difference is how much lighter the older cars are, the 200 is over 1200kg which is light by today's standards but it barely has any more power than the 182 really and is significantly heavier) But the chassis is phenomenal, It's so easy to rotate and just wants to turn in faster and faster each time, absolutely fantastic on a B road! :)
Very nice to see, which is business as usual with Henry 👍. I just wish there was a bit of dynamics... Appreciate the value of the car but I would bet tyres are not so fresh (by means of age, not wear) and one or two lift off oversteer would have made the video more exciting !
Here in France impossible to find they were put into storage years ago for collectors.... There’s alot more Peugeot Gti’s, but then even tatty high mileage examples will sell for 8 ~10000 Euros.
My dad managed to get the Williams 2 as a company car...! I used to drive her a lot when home on leave . What a car. Lucky enough to get a Clio 197 lux with the cup chassis later on in life but just didn't feel as perky...still that was a joy to drive !!
It’s so funny to see and old Clio amongst the greats, but this car is definitely deserving of that position. Up there with the Golf VR6, Vauxhall Lotus Carlton and arguably the phase 1 Renault Clio V6. European hooligan classics…
@@nathanb2100 Yeah I heard there was a thing with the Vauxhall/Lotus Carlton that it was too fast for even the UK police cars to keep up with it at the time, so it was generally driven by drug dealers and ram-raiders etc. for that reason. The UK government even tried to have it banned because it was relatively inexpensive and fast. This also inevitably added to the car’s infamy and ironically was the reason why it was so hot at the time. Me personally I just think it looks gorgeous. It’s the pinnacle of that old 90s saloon car style…
They were a "bargain" five or ten years ago. The Clio Williams is _long_ past the bottom of its value curve. Great little car though. When the Hagerty chap talks about similar era cars having "gone through the roof" in the majority of cases the big money prices are for _ultra_ low mileage, essentially NOS examples. When one of those makes a big price then for a time anyway people selling much lesser cars of the same model think theirs is just as "valuable" and for a time a few buyers think the same, but it quickly enough stablises. Yes there was the what 30K plus? Pug 205 GTi, that fell out of a time machine where the original paint was still wet, but now they run anywhere between 5k for a ropey example to 15k for a half decent one with a couple of dealers chancing their arm above that. And I can't see how something like the Renault 5 GT turbo values "have gone through the roof" either given the average price seems to be between 10-15k Sterling and they've been like that for a good while now. Interestingly the 90's Japanese stuff have gone up in value over the last couple of years and they don't have any of them in this Hagerty expert guide. Never mind that the Hagerty chap suggested the Williams 3 as a good bet, when if you're looking to "invest" the 1 is clearly the model to go for. TBH this just sounds like industry marketing speak hoping to increase the perception of higher values for these cars and hoping it will reflect reality. Though of all the ones I can see in their lineup the Porsche Boxter is a car that is a good bet. Under appreciated and undervalued for too long.
Someone has just posted a car on PH that they found in a shed. It's done 9K miles and looks absolutely mint, top and bottom. Comes with Williams hat, jacket and watch. What ever the top is with these cars I suspect this is the one that will find it.

I agree with some of the comments, the Clio Williams isn't what I would call a bargain at the moment. It's in similar price range as a 205 GTi. Hagerty isn't looking very hard in their crystal ball for this one.
It's in the same price range but it was a much rarer and better car. It'll go up a lot, also because they rust a lot and parts are impossible to find. It deserves to cost 40K...and it will soon
With the best respect; you don't need anyone from Hagerty to tell you that the Williams Clio 1 is going up in value/collectible. They started doing this the day they stopped production on it...
I went looking through the classifieds for these a couple of months back, thinking they’d be £8k - £10k, how wrong I was! In reality at the same money as an E46 M3, I know which way I’d be going!
@@Carfection I do love the little Renault 5, we had one a few years ago, but when it comes to that model line, the upcoming „Turbo 3“ restomod is what really interests me..! ^^
Overpriced rust buckets now. Jokers on eBay calling themselves ‘specialists’ touting these for £30k. Nonsense. A clio 172/182 is better and under 6k. Older cars becoming more expensive is a madness I cannot grasp (exceptions being certain rare cars) but run of the mill hatches like these it’s just plain silly. The memory is better than the reality. Tech has moved on. The only ones winning here are the greedy nobbers pushing the prices up with misty eyed dreams of classic sports hatches.
The clio Williams was a bargain 10 years ago when it was half the price of today. In France, a nice one is about 30 000 euros

Crazy prices in the US, everywhere else between 15-25k(euro/dollars/stg). Though that's about double of what they were three or four years ago.
50th Like!!!! I still run a French Hot Hatch in 2021!!
With the best respect; you don't need anyone from Hagerty to tell you that the Williams Clio 1 is going up in value/collectible. They started doing this the day they stopped production on it...
So sad to see this ..I had number 152 and it was stolen and stripped...why I have no idea...:(
I went looking through the classifieds for these a couple of months back, thinking they’d be £8k - £10k, how wrong I was! In reality at the same money as an E46 M3, I know which way I’d be going!
Unless it's a CSL no point they're ridiculously common.
I'd rather have the Clio
Clio anyday!!!
So a bargain would truly be that you are getting value for a cheaper price right? Is there truly a lot of value here?
In the netherlands thy cost 25k to even 31k........
No bargains their prices have been high for a couple years and you barely find decent ones
Love it🥰
A lot faster than my rental diesel Clio!
Clio 182 trophy is still a bargain
One of the best cars I was ever stupid enough to sell. And I’m pretty stupid. Still have the 986 though 😂
Henry Catchpole and Carfection are postmen because they always deliver
Hahahhah 😂😂😂😂
I think my cow market cavalier 1.6L, number 10987 is going to be worth £100k next year. 🤣🤣
You have missed that boat lol
Sounds like there are more Williams than there are 16v clio's !?
my dream car...
Cool car but I wouldn't pay 30k for one...
Still got the 182 then...
I wanted to see this
Then I realize is Hagerty
Wanted more
What happened?
I wouldn't have paid rock bottom prices for a Williams.
In italy theese have been like unicorns for 10 years already, i’ve seen only 1 in my life 😅 i’ve seen more f40s 😂😂😂
Would love to se a modern Renault 4 electric, SO please Renault?!😍😍😍
Renault should do a Hommage to this car, no? It would be rather cool!
They have an electric homage to the Renault 5 on the way. Excited to see that!
@@Carfection I do love the little Renault 5, we had one a few years ago, but when it comes to that model line, the upcoming „Turbo 3“ restomod is what really interests me..! ^^
I've got one but unfortunately its on forza motorsport
The AMG 2 l turbo should fit. HAHAHAHA!!
No bwarp?
Get to the Westy already!
I never bought one of these because i hate the interior....it looked so dated even when it came out new
Nice looking cars, shame about the shoddy build quality
