Prof. Dr. Ishtiaq Ahmed explains what is the Sharia, the Islamic Law, and argues in favour of reform regarding law in the light of modern ideas, values, information and knowledge.
Dr. Ishtiaq Ahmed is a Swedish political scientist and author of Pakistani descent. He obtained a Ph.D. in Political Science from Stockholm University, where he is currently Professor Emeritus, having retired in 2010. During 2015-2019 he was Visiting Professor at the Government College University, Lahore, and in 2013-2015 he was Visiting Professor at the Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS). He is an Honorary Senior Fellow of the Institute of South Asian Studies (ISAS) at the National University of Singapore and was Visiting Research Professor at the Institute of South Asian Studies (ISAS). He was also the Visiting Professor at the South Asian Studies Programme, the National University of Singapore from June 2007 to June 2010. He is also an Editor-in-General of the "Liberal Arts & Social Sciences International Journal (LASSIJ)"; a member of the editorial advisory boards of "Asian Ethnicity"; "Journal of Punjab Studies"; "IPRI Journal, Islamabad"; and "PIPS Research Journal of Conflict and Peace Studies, Islamabad.

Sir my submission to differ on Hindu & Islam.
There is no prescription in Hindus books only description r there.
In Islam it's all mentioned as prescription in Quran coz, no Muslim can go against book.
Plz elaborate on that.
U mentioned Ambedkar, he write in his book Islam as a giroh (gang) which try to rule, by guidence from Islamic book. Coz as per Muslim not a single word or full stop can be changed.
Ambedkar being a Hindu deny some practice of Hinduism & adopted another branch of Hinduism that is buddhism. Can any Abrahamic religion has branches like Hinduism has Jainism, Buddhism, Sikhism etc. No, bcoz Hinduism is dharma not religion. In Hinduism no one is running after other to make him Muslim or christian, coz its natural not designed.
Plz pardon for this. But Sir some time I feel u forget very particular point, that, Description & Prescription r two basic things while analysing Hindu books & Islamic book.

Sir , I am your huge fan but I do have two observations:
With due respect
1.you should must read the book by Savakar (The indian war of independence 1857), in that book he praised everyone in India & on that time he was considered as a secular figure.
But at the later stage politics assassinate his character.
2.Hindu life and daily practice doesn't govern with Manusmriti,even the families doesn't have any copy of Manusmriti.
All are moved on if any bad practices happened in the past .
I have read him but you must read the huge two volume work by Vikram Sampath. It is a celebration of Savakar but he gives full details of what Savakar wrote and did but then finds justifications for all his actions.

But I hope Vikram mentioned about the Patit pavan temple 1931 a steer effort by Savakar where untouchable can worship their god as other people would .he was also struggling to vanish the caste system from the Society.
Unfortunately his efforts were never appreciated.

He has written many good books on india Pakistan relation , partition etc .
You will also admire him once you will connect him for a long time with his lecture over RUclips.

Professor is ardent admirer of Neheru & Gandhi. He thinks that RSS & BJP are communal. In every Muslim's mind there is a hidden agenda that they will again rule over India like Mugals/ Pathans.
In my view another thing that should change is celebrating Kurbani, this leaves a very horrific affect on children, I used to live during my childhood in a muslim populous area and saw a goats head floating in drain, a person roaming with a kinife and a Woodlog to facilitate kurbani during bakra eid. I was so terrified to see that as child that I straight to my house and it left a lasting impact on me, I still remember those visuals and feeling I had back then. I wonder what happens to muslim children who see that from their own eyes each year that blood shed etc. This physiological impact must be having lasting Impact on them as well

With due respect, why do you have to bring in Hindu angle? Apni baat karo! Classic convert mindset. Denouncing caste system but finding virtues in slavery in Islam is laughable. Sir, I admire your knowledge. I accept that there were social problems in Hindu society but they have reformed from time to time as a society. Why muslim world as a society is not able to reform. I have doubt that muslim religious scholars Mullahs and Maulanas will ever align with the thought of scholars like you. How reforms can be brought for the betterment of muslims youths and the world.

I was disappointed to hear from you that the burning down of the huge library in nalanda was a small crime in comparison to the treatment of the dalits as was practised in those times. Sir, a librarary is not just books . It is the abode of knowledge. And this library was the treasure house of knowledge of philosophers seeking truth, evolving over millenia.
After having destroyed such precious manuscripts people like you are saying there is no evidence that the evils of the cast system came on later. When we destroy the books we have destroyed whatever evidence there was of the systems prevailing then. I have great respect for the research you have done and i am currently reading your book jinnah. But i do feel it is unwarranted to comment in areas where your knowledge and understanding is woefully inadequate.
It is a fact that western authors did very superficial studies of the sanatan dharma and are primarily the source of information for people who live outside in the west.
Sir, I highly appreciate your thoughts. You describe the things in a very logical way. I am very much against polygamy. I need your comments considering all the logical views in favour & against. People give the post war period as the only reasoning in favor & don't mention its bad effects which grill the females for whole of their life. Are females a commodity. Don't they have the rights to live their own way.

Do Hindus consider savaraker everything? Does manusmritit is a only book?
There are thousands of books from vedas, to upanishad and gita. But in abrahmic religion it is only one book that you follow.
The problem that exist on your side is being a Muslim you equate Hinduism similar to Islam and abrahmic way of living life.
The Qur'an has very few laws...but you require more than that to regulate society.
The Ommayeds first used Roman and Persian laws.They initiated new Sharia laws.They were replaced by Abbasids...The different factions do not agree with eachother ..and today it is no different.

1 monogamy (only one marriage)

Very true and logical. Law is made for humans not the other way around.
Manu Smriti's labor economic classification was based on skills and not on birth. Four Barnes (Brahman, Chattriya, Vaishya, Sudra)classification was done 7-8 thousands years back when they started living in groups or clans called Gotra. All villagers of one clan had one Gotra. It was mainly used to avoid in-breeding, unlike that of Muslims. That classification has no values now and modern Hindus do not believe in it. We all call ourselves Sanatan Dharmi.. Hindus have been able to change their laws with the passage of time to bypass old Hindu laws.
Muslims cannot do it and hence they are forced to follow outdated rural social customs and laws of 7th century-9th century. Muslims have to show courage to change it. Halala is a nonsense and shameful practice. . Marrying nine years old girls with seniors is another wrong practice. Minority are still ill treated in all Islamic countries. Forced conversion of kidnapped Hindu girls is wrong. There is no freedom of Speech in Islam . A practicing Muslim, even if disagree with the teachings and practices, cannot leave Islam. Because, if a Muslim rejects Islam then it is duty of all Muslims to kill that man. Check videos of Ex Muslim movement, where these ex Muslims do not show their faces. now, you know the reason. They treat non-Muslims as unequal or of lower race. Women cannot even freely go outside and work.
Sanatani of modern times have stopped calling themselves as Brahman ,Dalit etc. Kids of even villages are now inter-marrying. Forget about Hindu youth of cities and West.
